I'm very confused. I admit my knowledge of the judicial system isn't very good, but isn't copyright more of a civil offense therefore requires a civil case? Murder is a criminal case so shouldn't there be two separate trials? Why are they convicting all of them at the same time? I thought people had to be tried individually? Why isn't the defendants given a lawyer? Sure usually the lawyers they provide are overworked and underpaid,but it's better then nothing.

In the last half of the book the main character is tried for the murder of a man, but as the trials progresses the court seems more interested at the fact how he felt no emotion during his mothers funeral. Their verdict is completely based on his reaction to his mothers death rather than the murder of the man. Mao and his friends are being tried for the murder of Simonla, but the evidence is of their comic.
