I loved NY, but EDM was decent in their own right and while during that series...99 scored a nice goal heading up the right wing (at Nassau Coliseum)...even then (Spring, 1981) you could tell that the Oilers' Dynasty was just a matter of time and maturity.

its a shame the NHL changed the rules of the stanley cup playoffs in 1984 to a 2-3-2 series as opposed to a 2-2-1-1-1. they purposefully tried to make the isles lose...

I don't know, if they were really trying to make the Islanders lose - I mean, anyone watching that series from the second period of Game 3 onward knew that the Oilers were a better team at that point. However, what has become somewhat heartbreakingly emblematic of the Isles' franchise is the fact that they were SO close to the 5th Cup, and here we are 26 years later knowing they will probably never win another one on Long Island.

@NYIJK10 (part 3) - problem is that until July2015 (unless the Shinnecocks come and build on the NVMC land), the NYI are effectively in limbo, as they won't even be able to keep their own guys once they become good until it is clear that they are staying or going. The franchise was once incredibly well run fron a hockey op's standpoint, but greed (ownership as well as government) melted the underpinnings. Garth Snow, whom I actually feel for, is totally impotent to do anything about it till....

@NYIJK10 (part 4) either (1) Wang decides to sell, (2) Wang lets the sublease expire in July 2015 without renewal and moves team, (3) Kate Murray decides to give Wang what he wants(prob. not happening) (4)Shinnecocks and Al D'Amato move in to build casion (scary). My conclusion, which I believe is a healthy one, is that this team is a waste of time until there is a resolution to all of this. None of the above scenarios are particularly fantastic, well, unless Wang sells, which is best scenario

I know all of these things, and am not disagreeing with you. The fact that Wang doesn't care for L. Island or the Isles is not what I'm contesting. What I'm contesting is the allegation that the Isles are never going to win the Cup. Wang will not bother keeping the team and moving to Kansas City if he doesn't get his Lighthouse. He'll sell the team to someone who presumably has more stake in the team...and with a more stable management they can turn around...look at Pittsburgh.

I just don't see how Wang, who has a track record of draconian practices and sees himself as a major player on Long Island, will relinquish the lease on the land parcel until there are no winners left. In other words, I don't see him selling unless the team actually moves to KC, Quebec City, Winnipeg, Hamilton, or whereever. I hope I'm wrong, but I am rarely pleasantly surprised with how business is orchestrated with the NYI

I guess the NYI have dragged me into the mud as a consumer and I see no reason to think that things will change, positively, for them until I am proven otherwise. Sadly, I believe that the NYI are going the way of Nunley's - extinction. Then, they will win a Cup with another town&name. That is really what I think

1981 playoffs very exciting time for Minnesota fans. I noticed them in 1980-upsetting Montreal. I have that series. Philly beat them and lost to Isles. In`81 North Stars season hit rock bottom when in Feb they got their asses kicked in a nasty brawl in Boston, where they never had won before'81 playoffs. From this game on they played with moxie and attitude; The Brotens,Bobby Smith,Dino and the PP. SWEPT Boston, rolled up Buffalo, 6 with Calgary- then the Isles ended it. Great run in '81.

@isleseeya I had an argument the other night with an idiot Rangers fan.He tried to tell me that the Rangers stanley cup team in 1994 was better than any of the Islanders,Devils or even any of the last 4 Red Wings cup winners.I couldn't stop laughing.The Rangers were up 3 games to 1 and they let the Canucks come back to tie the series,and they just about won game 7by the skin of their teeth.That 2001-02 Red Wings team would have swept that Rangers team in 4 games.

I always had a soft-spot for Wayne Merrick. I grew up an Isles fan in south-east Queens, I loved going across the border into Valley Stream cos it was "Islander Country", during the 4th cup run I remember seeing a lot of houses with signs like that.
