an unexpected 50 knots on the side of a ship is like someone just coming at you out of nowhere and pushing you sideways as hard as they can. Not a helluva lot you can do about it. You can regain your balance, but it takes time. Imaging trying to regain it in something the size of a building on its side. Granted, they could/should have probably seen the squall line coming, but it's amazing what wind will do to a boat of any size when it hits hard and fast.

The Enchantment of the Seas has fixed propeller shafts, not azipods (propulsion drives that rotate 360 degrees for full-power in any direction), so she could not push away from the other liner. Also, with ships as large as these, they cannot move forward or astern rapidly enough in order to avert an allision, this is why the RCCL captain met at the stern where the least damage could occur.

All of those out there who are criticising the Cruise ship safety record.....I totally agree! I used to work for Carnival and they are a total joke- accidents just waiting to happen! In just 1 contract I saw 1 arson attack by a crew member, 2 occurances of blatant marine pollution, 1 outbreak of Norovirus 2 accidental fires and a major mechanical breakdown!.....all covered up for the sake of publicity. That was in 6 months, I walked shortly after that! Cruise safe, cruise Royal Caribbean!!!

I WAS ON THIS CRUISE September 30th 2009. For being a passenger, Carnival Cruise Lines didn't offer the passengers nothing. I mean a few drinks and/or 25% off a future would have been great. Out of the 28+ cruises I have been on. This is the first accident on a cruise ship.
