5.56x45mm is the NATO name for .223 (.22 caliber bullet) . Both rounds are exactly the same
7.62x51mm is the NATO name for .308 (30 caliber bullet) . Both rounds are 99.9% the same. I believe the 7.62 variant has thicker brass to withstand rough transportation, which in-turn means it has a tad less gun powder. Same killing power none-the-less.
5.56 is loaded to higher pressure than standard .223 loads (~7,000psi difference). It also has thicker case walls to withstand this pressure. It is NOT considered safe (by SAAMI) to fire 5.56 out of a rifle specifically chambered for .223.
7.62x51 is loaded to about 200psi greater than standard .308 loads. It is considered safe (by SAAMI) to fire the two interchangeably.

Actually, the squad would be set up to have all M-14's on semi-auto, and one per squad on fully auto. Essentially replacing the BAR. Sort of like the SAW now. My Dad had one in Vietnam and when they got in country, their company armorer converted all to fully auto, instead of just one per squad. The M1A is just the civilian version.

your analogy is flawed on both accounts. see the civilian .223 and .308s were made in and for older hunting rifles and are loaded to lower pressures. the saami specs are different also. it is safe to shoot .223 in a chamber made for 5.56 nato but it is not safe to shoot a 5.56 in a chamber made for .223...
