As of last year Iran was capable of launching 11000 medium range missiles at israel over the course of 7 days, whatever the defense system it would be saturated and overwhelmed. Strategically Iran is tough one. Unlike us it does not need to inventory a nuclear device. As long as they maintain a "threshold" programme (able to assemble a warhead in a few days should the urgency arise), it's all it takes, not having them sit in rows in hardened/protected buildings!

As of last year Iran was capable of launching 11000 medium range missiles at israel over the course of 7 days, whatever the defense system it would be saturated and overwhelmed. A nuclear warhead is not the weapon of choice when retaliating against a tiny country the size of israel. Iran actually does not regard israel as a challenge to its defense.

Estimates of the U.S. cost of life to attack the main-land was in excess of 1 million souls.
Better it be the Japs ( who have no souls, so sayeth South Park ) than us!
The cost of life for the Russians would have been greater still. Those nukes saved many more lives than they caused. Of course, that relies on the Japs keeping the fight going until the bitter end, which I doubt they would have.

They are one of the most devoted and loyal fighting forces in history. They would have fought until the last man was killed, and the last blade of grass in Japan was captured. When your choice is between a weapon capable of pummeling your enemy into near immediate submission and sending your children to fight and die by the hundreds of thousands, you really are at your last resort.
The gamble worked. The first nuke had more damaging consequences than first thought - the second wasn't even needed (though it served its purposes beyond just Japan).
Today, the world is a better place because we nuked Japan - even though new fears were bred and risks created.
