Can't help but feel that Novation is a company that quickly lost it's way....it really has been downhill ever since the supernova/nova series...and FFS don't get me started on that hunk of plastic Ultranova!
Please help me - I've read lot a lot of comments on this synth and one thing I still cant get:
is it possible to SIMULTANEOUSLY use it as sound card ( by sending to speakers something from sequencer - beat, etc.) AND as a synth for playing separate melody, bass line, etc. ?? I need that kind of functioanality for gigs and key word is SIMULTANEOUSLY. Thanx in advance!
@Goldbloodeddragon But this is also a very cheap midi controller with a wealth of controls and decent (for a budget) keys, and sound card. Say what you like, it's still at least a bit better than using the A-L row of your laptop.
@lisamp7 I've got a Xstation and I love it! are you beggining on synth or are you experienced. Do you use Midi, softsynths, DAWs ect? Xstation is more versitle as it is a very detailed midi controller and an awsome synth, that serves as a USB audio I/O, However, if its just for the synth, and ur just beggining, sh 201 is made to be easy to use. I would say Xstation, but I dont have any hands on expenience with it. Questions?
I am just beginning, but I learn fast and i have people around me that can help me if i get stuck, so i am looking for the best for under 1000. I've been considering the xiosynth too, mainly cause of the gator it has, and being cheaper doesnt hurt either, but im pretty torn now between the xio and the x station. Really don't know which way to go. Being able to plug in vocals and get delay effects and such is a plus, does anyone know if you can do that with the xio? thanks!
If you're just looking at the synth aspect the xio is as good as the x-station, but also has a step sequencer, however, the xio does not have the amount of control that the x-station has, and if like me, and a lot of VA/A synth enthusiasts you like to constantly tweak the sound till you get it just right the x-station is the right way to go. the X-station also has a better set of conections on the back, and with regards to the case, novation to gig bags, ive got one for my x-station and it fine.
I bought the SH201 about a year ago. It felt a bit cheap but sounded really cool! 'Supersaw' is the tits! And because it was all layed out in front of me my workflow was better.
But the X station had a synth as well as being an audio interface/ DAW controller and a had a superior feeling keyboard so I made the switch. I have regretted it ever since. The synth is much harder to find you way around and the mic pre amps sound cheap and rubbish...and 4get about novation's automap.
You can use it to control knobs and sliders in Reason. Reason however can't record the audio made from the synth - you'd need to use Reason with Record to do that.
To control the synths and other things in Reason you need a keyboard controller. The main difference between a Synth and a controller is the synth actually has the sounds in it, a controller will control the sounds and other knobs, etc, in your Reason program. Reason doesnt record, though so you'll need a recording program like Record. A synth like this can also be used as a controller. This one also has an audio interface built in so you can use a mic and record into your computer with it.
Have you recorded audio into Reason like vocals or an acoustic instrument mic'd? I think Reason sequences midi data and plays it back via softsynths and effects.
Are those filters at :57 to 1:11 built in to this thing or are they external software? And if its external software is it included and is it compatible with Logic/Mac?
The xstation is good to init yourself in the synths world and as controller, but if you have some more money spend it... It's too weak and the sounds of the oscillators are not very good...
I use mine only as a controller for my soft synths and modular. In that capacity, it's only drawback is the 25 keys. Other than that, it's a dream to play. The sounds it makes are OK....but a Virus TI sits right next to it in my rig. GAME OVER.
The X Station is not only an awesome 300-voice synthesizer - it is a great MIDI controller for Ableton Live too. The faders and knobs and buttons are all CC "learn" assignable. Also has an awesome stereo audio interface with XLR and 1/4" jacks, AND digital effects. They are selling used for like $300.00 in some cases.
An Sh-201 is almost certainly the more powerful synthesizer, it's VA capabilities are awesome.
What the Novation can do better is the fact that it covers a wider range of sounds and is a powerful MIDI controller as well - ideal for something like Reason.
it comes with 200 presets, more than 300 additional patches are available on Novation website. more can be found in a Novation/X-Station Yahoo! group, and XioSynth patches seem to be compatible.
yup, there's an Aftertouch/Breath menu for each patch, containing 5 pages for the aftertouch. setting all of them to 0 would disable aftertouch for the current patch.
There's an aftertouch/breath menu (F2/AT-BR) for each patch, containing five aftertouch page (for various filters/mod settings). Setting these five pages to 0 disables aftertouch for the current patch. Velocity can also be altered with the last fader, as well as the velocity curve (globally, via the Template Common menu, first page starting from the bottom page, in synth mode).

@Goldbloodeddragon there is a differnece between soft wear and hard wear
softwear is not nearly as tactile
hardwear you can have your hands moving and doing maipulations
i used softwear for yars and after getting my first synth i feel like the musicality is so much more

its a midi controller. Hence you need some form of sound source, computer or hardware, as it does not create sounds by itself, only control others.

it is around the same price than a microkorg.
it has not the vocoder directly integrated but it has an audio interfaceand it can be use as a midi interface and controller.
if you want a cheaper version, you have the xiosynth
