At first I thought it was from "History Channel - Dogfights", but then a US plane was shot down ... and the voice of the speaker - still lame, but differently...
SBDs were often used as fighters before the Navy began to assign more Wildcats the their carriers. Some SBD pilots were confirmed aces and the SBD was the only WWII bomber aircraft to have a better than 1 to 1 kill ratio against enemy aircraft
@blownglasslide-I would LOVE to know your source 'cause my dad flew SBDs during WWII. Yes, they were used as Combat Air Patrol over carriers and there are examples of SBDs dog fighting 3 zeros and downing them all. But I question the kill ratio. The SBD was considered obsolete before the war started but a replacement was slow coming and proved to be not much of an improvement when it did. Still, I really would like your source as it would be a very interesting fact if it is true.
My source was Barrett Tilman, a famous writer in the "warbird" circles. I'm pretty sure the actual figure was in a book called "SBD Units of WWII" or something to that effect. It was put out by Osprey, and is still available as far as I know. Your dad must have some incredible stories! Regardless of whether the positive kill ratio is true, the SBD is still my favorite aircraft. :)
Please can somebody tell me where this clip is from and where I can get hold of it. Excellent graphics!

pochipotch 1 year ago

@TA050105

Wildcat hat a 2 to 1 kill ratio to Japs, Hellcat had a 19 to 1 kill ratio. So sorry about your airplanes being shot down at such a high rate.
