It was well known in the NHL that you keep your head up, ESPECIALLY when Stevens was on the ice, if you didn't then you could expect to be concussed at some point. He hit clean and like a truck, it was his skill. It is a players responsibility to make sure he doesn't put himself in danger, always keep your head up, it's not just a saying, it's a real responsibility. People have no right to complain about concussions from clean hits when a player isn't being responsible about his own well being.

First of all, these are beautiful hits from a great defenceman...But knowing what we know now about brain injuries, and seeing these great players not being able to stand, I cant help but respect what the league is TRYING to eliminate from the game. As frustrating as it is seeing guys being suspended for TRYING to throw clean checks...Honestly, as much as I respect Stevens, Id rather of watched a healthy Lindros career..or any great player for that matter. GET RID OF THE HARD PLASTIC EQUIPMENT!

It was well known in the NHL that you keep your head up, ESPECIALLY when Stevens was on the ice, if you didn't then you could expect to be concussed at some point. He hit clean and like a truck, it was his skill. It is a players responsibility to make sure he doesn't put himself in danger, always keep your head up, it's not just a saying, it's a real responsibility. People have no right to complain about concussions from clean hits when a player isn't being responsible about his own well being.

So many crybabies out there. Stevens was the best open ice hitter the league has ever seen. He wasn't dirty, he just put you on your ass hard if you crossed his tracks which is exactly what he is supposed to do. Ask the players he was hitting and I'll bet everyone of them will tell you he wasn't dirty, just a tough as nails player who they feared and respected. This whole mentality that every big hit is a dirty hit is ruining the game today. Keep your head up and quit crying!

First of all Shanahan said these hits are clean. 2nd of all there was still nothing wrong with #2 and 1. He hit completely with his shoulder. If there was possibly any elbow it came on the follow through of the hits but thats what happens with any hit anyone would make.

I am a huge fan of big hits, but almost all of those hits had scott stevens throwing his arm into peoples face. that's why almost all of the players getting hit were bleeding somewhere on their face or a concussion.
i prefer shoulder to chest rather than flying arm-bar to the face. Kronwall knows how to do it.

@NextHW5 I don´t think they are all that dirty. The one on Kariya is really ugly because the puck was long gone. But I also think that players that can´t take their eyes of the puck when stick-handling should be punished a´la Stevens. Sometimes I think it´s the victims own fault because they get their heads down way to low and the tackle hits the head. I do thing that it´s a good thing though that they nowadays doesn´t accept dirty hits to the head.

This video actually reminded me why hockey was good. Its an extreme sport. It's supposed to be anyways. There's hitting and fighting, and sometimes there's a guy like Stevens who can put a serious hurt on you, and you gotta be skilled enough to avoid that. Because its its war out there. And all those hits by Stevens were legal, it all goes with the territory. I don't even watch hockey anymore. Its not the game it should be. Its faster but its less gutsy and brutal.

Besides 10 they were all dirty in some ways. All the others besides 4 are either intentionally hits, blind side or after the player just passed the puck. I love checking but only when they're legit hits not stupid and for stunning.
