  • RT actually had more ring then either MDM or Corelli and his top B was bigger then either one of them . They had very large middle voices, MDM especially . I heard all 3 of them in house, the comment that Corelli/ Del Monaco had more Squillo was made by someone who never heard all three live. I have heard Lyric tenors with as much ring as a Spinto or Dramatic, Squillo and size is not the same. Shicoff and Enrico Di Giuseppe both had tons of ring, especially Shicoff in his prime and Both Lyric!

  • As wonderful as this excerpt is, I would never place Mr. Tucker as "Numero Uno" Chenier. There are plenty in the competition: DelMonaco, Corelli & Bergonzi, just to mention a few.

  • WONDERFUL IN PRIME VOICE 1958

  • Forget all others in this role, in his prime like here 1958 you have a combination of the lyric Chenier the poet and the power of Tucker --easily equal to Corelli in power and more lyric so Tucker is #1 here he has beauty and combined with power and ring he is the tenor for it.

  • I don't care much about comperative-discussions. Each voice (from the great voices) has its own contribution to the whole world-culture. Tucker was one of those voices. Thanks for uploading this beautiful and moving music and performance.

  • this is really incredible. He is full of energy. For me, he doesn´t lack excitement at all. It´s beautiful.

  • great job ;)

  • Great posting, Theodore and pearkmuth3. Great performance and nice slideshow. Thank you.

  • This was 1958 and tucker was 44 years old. Corelli was fine also, habits aside but del monaco in it has some moments corelli and tucker did better and that is the lyric parts. Chenier was a poet and del monaco in the lyric moments was not as beautiful as either corelli or tucker and so his Chenier is not as great as his Otello over all. His Otello was amazing i heard it at la scala in 1959 he was Otello.

  • Etnalleb you never heard tucker and the other two in the house or you would know Tucker had as much or more squillo so you are going by recordings and that is not the best way to judge, even live recordings, your to young most probably to have heard Del Monaco anyhow or tucker .

  • Thanks again. Great uploads indeed and I like the pictures you've used in the videos.

  • Richard Tucker is a great tenor, there is no doubt he was one of the most prominent and important tenors of the Metro in later half of last century. I love his Don Carlos and Pinkerton. Thank you for posting. Paul.

  • Excellent recording, I know Pearlmuth is a Die-Hard Tucker fan and no doubt Tucker was a great Tenor but he lacked the excitement and the Squillo both MDM and Corelli had. I prefer MDM as the better Chenier and Corelli over -all but no doubt Tucker ranks with the Best . TY

  • Sorry but I beg to differ. Tucker's squillo was overwhelming and surely you cannot be oblivious to that fact. I just don't understand why people can't hear it. He sang more lyrically but the voice was just as exciting as del Monaco/Corelli's.

  • And I'm not a die hard Tucker fan but a very sincere admirer of Tucker, I try to give every singer a fair judgement of my honest opinions of them. We all know there are people out there who are so obsessed with one single singer that 'everything they sing is automatically the best, the rest is pure stinking trash'. I'm not one of those people and neither is pearlmuth3.

  • Well My Friend Let's just say in order not to get into a debate that i politely agree to disagree with you. I thought MDM and Corelli both had squillo in the highest capacity and while you are right Tucker did sing more lyrically , In my opinion he was no match for either MDM or Corelli in the Dramatic roles. Although i do think Tucker's Pagliacci was as good or better than either MDM or Corelli.

  • @GermanOperaSinger

The high overtones (squillo) ARE overwhelming. Beautiful resonance. This is a grand rendition. Pavarotti (a prime pavarotti) is by far my favorite tenor, but I realize that this recording is superior to what Pav did late in his career.

Great vid and analysis, as usual, GOS. :)

  • Great stuff, thanks to both...

Did he happen to send you the Improvviso?? :D

  • hey GOS, great upload, and thanks to pearlmuth for the material

    what year is this?
