I find ridiculous to compare Miss Sass voice to Callas s voice..... there are some parts of the range that Sass covers very strongly, and Callas did at the end of her career, 59 to lets say 64...
But Sass s very beautiful lyrical voice doesn't resemble in the slightest Callas voice at her prime....
Agree, many sopranos of the post Callas era imitated her defects, but that is all.
Is it a curse to be born with a voice that sounds like Callas? Is your soprano destined to a short and tragic end. hmmmm.!!!! Sass, Fabbriccini, Alberti. did I miss anyone?
I've read that she damaged her voice by singing Wagner too often too young. (Early 20's) Too bad. She was a great beauty and would have had a bigger career.
This IS a covered Lyric Soprano in order to give the impression of a heavier voice. It CANNOT be HEARD in the FORTE passages. Listen to ROSA PONSELLE, FLORENCE AUSTRAL and NINON VALLIN. Real projection of the voice does not require manipulation
A legkedvesebb áriám!
she's my very favourite among new stars in the 80's when i first picked up opera. as a tenor myself, i've been studying and practising voice for 32 years. after listening to her over the years with the HUNGAROTON recording in MEDEA and DECCA recording in her best in bellini, donizetti and verdi, i must say, her support of breath has constant and obvious problems. just carefully notice the last breath of each last note of each phrase. it stops in the middle of the air. what can you say?
honestly i hear few similarities to callas. i think even after the weight drop callas prob had a fatter voice. i like sass alot, she is one of my favourites and ive never considered her to be a callas imitator. i do think she darkened her voice too much though and took on waaaaay to much too early. to me her voice was always purely lyric with nice highs and lows. i wish she would have waited to take on heavier rep. listen to her second prayer in stiffelio thats prob one of her best.
Oh gag me with a to inch cock...this is just dreadful. How could it possibly be an imitation of Callas? There is no bel canto whatever. Just a lot of stringy hair, some hand jive, and missed notes everywhere. This is really bad singing by any standard.
She had great sensitivity, a very moving artist. However on a purely technical basis she didn't really have a good breath span or control. She disguises this very well here by her wonderful musical intentions, but later on things would become very dificult for her vocally . When she sang this role at Covent Garden i believe there was a fight in the gallery one night between those who liked her and those who didn't. Just like going back to the old days of opera!
Superbe !
please answer this question. forgive my ignorance but i just hava a hard time trying to find what "cabaletta" means. is it a music term, and if it is a music term or whatever type of term, what does it means?
@manoloomarer Cabaletta derives from the word "cavallo/caballo" (Spanish/Italian) and refers to the tempo, "at a gallop", very quick and with a reprise that is even faster, usually.
@manoloomarer A cabaletta is a strophic aria in a quick tempo, following an aria in a slower tempo. A cabaletta consists of two identical strophes, sometimes separated by a "tempo di mezza", which can consist of a dialogue with another singer, and sometimes ending with a coda. It is costumary that the singer embellishes the second strophe of the cabaletta and perhaps adds a cadenza at the end (this can also be done between the two strophes). The cabaletta here starts at 6:43.
Sylvia Sass was hailed in the early ´80 as the New Callas, an impossible task for anybody, but she is a fantastic artist and sings an excellent "Casta Diva". Brava!
In many ways she does Callas better than Callas. Stop talking about how this isn't her "natural voice". All operatic instruments are manufactured, it's the nature of the medium and of technique.
What matters here is how brilliantly she delivers this! Last great Norma indeed!!!
Her technique is wonderful and I love her simple decoration in the begging of verse two and her subtle approach to something so powerfully dramatic music wise but she is connected to the text and gives a just interpretation to the aria. One wonders what happened to such a wonderful artist. BTW this orchestra's intonation sucks!
Ehmm . . .
First and foremost, thanks for the post. I found this an interesting portrayal. Sass always gives a very personal protrayal and whether you like her or not, at least she always gives it her absolute all. It's crazy in some ways to compare such different singers as Callas, Sass and Sutherland - they all had their special strengths and appeal. For me, though no one sang the cabaletta like Callas - such confidence and command of the role.
I agree. People need to stop making these ridiculous comparisons. I personally don't want to hear a bunch of singers who all sound the same....good or not. This girl added a beautiful light approach to the aria. She didn't make it sound strained or overpowering. I quite like it.
Thanks so much Mazi59. It was nice to know that after the long illness she was able to return to her career, but I suppose her appearances now must be seldom, but nevertheless she was a very great, a marvelous singer (to quote Verdi's comments about Maria Malibran..)
A great singer she was much grace and vocal accuracy ..And her singing this aria is so close to perfection, especially in terms of expressing Norma's emotions..You can really feel what the aria is about.
Purtroppo, I don't speak French, but she certainly did not sing "coooosta diva"! Please! While her Italian diction was never "perfect" (although her initial "casta diva" "a" vowel was no darker than that of the great Callas), no one could, in their right mind, deny that this was a great, great soprano, vocally, technically, and dramatically. One of the greatest ever to walk the planet, in my opinion.
A bientôt, chère Amie !!
Sass shows a huge dynamic range from FFF to PPP. Very impressive performance, especially from such a young singer. This aria requires, among other things, a steady tone and a floating quality, which few sopranos possess. For me, the best Casta Diva was that of Montserrat Caballe.
We would be lucky to have a Norma like her today ! Did you hear Netrebko slopping through "Ah bello a me " from 07 ? People would have thrown shoes at her 30 years ago !
Most jó magyarnak lenni.
I find this to be an incredibly beautiful rendition of an incredibly beautiful song. Sass was certainly great in her time. Nice clear runs, good tone, but most importantly an extremely devoted actress. This performance is more than beautiful, it's excellent. In my top 4 performances for sure.
I will say however that I think she could hold the lines longer. She kind of just breaths everywhere here and I know that not everyone can breath like Caballe, but this aria is all about legato in my opinion and breathing everywhere disturbs that. Also, the cabaletta was not as well sung.
i cannot agree more with you, this area is all about legato and you got it right no one can breath and hold the notes as caballe, this is luck of training too i think.
Sounds fabulous considering she looks like she's having major sinus drainage problems. Are any of you people out there who post actually singers? Just curious...
Are you otorhinolaryngologist ? Though Sass' performamces are far from being flawless - short breath, troubles with the high tones she can't hold long and that often wobble -, they're all very exciting, personal, inspired, affecting...
What a beautifully paced and wonderfully sung rendition of Casta Diva. I was always a big fan of Sass and never understood why she didn't reach superstardom. This is a lesson in bel canto singing. Bellini would be proud.
All the greats of the past bring something to this aria as does Sass. It's a pity for us, the listening public, that this voice is not available to us now. She had a great beauty of voice and person to show us.
Sass was "burdened" by comparisons to Maria Callas throughout her career. Not a burden, but a gift, I think. There are times when the voice does have the "Callas color", particularly in this aria. Sass's voice has more veluto than I find in Callas's singing. Sass lacks those shimmery downward portamenti of which Callas was the supreme master. Callas is still my favorite in this rep, but Sass is delightful.

@manoloomarer Fast paced and usually offers
some sort of 'resolution'... ex. after "Casta diva"
the cabaletta, "Ah bello a me retorna." Other good
examples are "Carlo vive" from "I masnadieri"
and "Sempre libera" from "Traviata." Wikipedia
is a good source for opera/music terms like
cabaletta, cavatina, etc.

No. I was an opera singer.

So, can you tell me more about these "major sinus drainage problems" ? I'm always curious to learn more.

What a beautifully paced and wonderfully sung rendition of Casta Diva. I was always a big fan of Sass and never understood why she didn't reach superstardom. This is a lesson in bel canto singing. Bellini would be proud.

If you are going to compare her voice with someone is with Joan Sutherland, although Sass' technique is not as good.

Bellissima e bravissima, nonostante la "callasite".

Beautiful voice and style, although I find her deportment a bit self-indulgent. I disagree with viva tebaldi. I think she is stunning.

Unfortunately she did not make many recordings.
Very good interpretation. The voice is there but she does not look like a prima diva.

Haven't heard her before, but I find her singing very delicate. I'll try to hear her recordings.
