I'm not religious but you know what I have zero problem with U2's songs having christian themes throughout. There's nothng wrong with it. What I find funny is that anyone would take this song to be so literal. It's not about a girl, it's not about religion, it's not about society, it's not about love.... oh wait a minute it's about all those things. Open your ears, eyes and hearts people. You don't have to be Christian to get the true meaning fo this song. You simply have to be human.

what you don't seem to understand is that God is SO good that the human race is evil in comparison. That means we all have sin in our lives. (even thinking an unkind thought is sin) God gave a remedy for sin through his son dying on the cross. Many don't like this remedy. Sin is like a bad job, your wages is death. Jesus paid the price for you through his death, but only if you believe, confess him as Lord and do your best to turn from sin and follow Him. Read 2 peter 3 verse 9. God bless.

by the way, if God is such a control freak then He would make you worship Him. He gives you the choice of loving Him and following Him but He only wants you to follow Him if you want to follow Him. He doesn't want you to be a wind up toy. I guarantee one thing, He DOES want a relationship with you. The song is a parallel between the girl in the song and the concept of grace - just listen. U2 has written several songs about their faith, such as Yahweh, 40, Gloria, If God Will Send His Angels, Falling At Your Feet, etc. There are lots of U2 songs and interviews on YouTube where they are very clear about their faith.
