They still make em, just not for sale in the us anymore. I am a generator tech, and see 71's, 92's daily...2000+. 92 is very responsive to load changes, probably best ive seen. Very little droop when it picks up a heavy load. Recently I saw a brand new Cummins 743. Anyone remember those?? Made in India, but it was a brand new engine on a generator. I see alot of cool things for a diesel head.
Brad you do fine work fixing these old trucks , I got a 1980 white road boss series 2 with a 475 8v92 detroit , I haul pulpwood with it 5 days a week over in East Tn , Id love to get you a hold of it & make it shiny again !
thats funny my grandpa had a 1978/79 kenworth w900 with the black paint and gold stripes he passed away in 1993 and sadly the truck was sold and then the guy wrecked from what I hear
look at the transmission like a 5 and 4 pretty much the same thing we have one in an 84 pete and i wouldnt trade it for the world, not many paople left who know how to drive em, much less a twin stick! LOL
a double frame?? that means the frame rails have been reinforced with another frame inside of the exsisting one, it is pretty common with loggin trucks dump trucks and heavy haul trucks
WOW!! Have'nt seen a 20 speed spicer in a long time...a friend of mine had one in a '85 359 day cab....It dose'nt look like he knows how to shift one in low range.....
AH yes........ What I ment to say is low speed........ But all the same, I've never drivin one before, I understand from my buddy that you have to be very precise between speeds or it won't shift correctly. (By the way) You can still find alot of these all over south America (Mexico...etc...etc...)
The Detroit Diesel engine sounded awesome, and made Horsepower by virtual of rpms , but they never made anywhere near the torque that modern 4 stroke diesels made. One of the best motors I have ever run is the Cummins ISX 475 with 1850 lb feet of torque.
Not a bad-lookin' old A model. Kinda odd seeing a V-8 Detroit with a single exhaust...even factory, most of them I ever saw had duals....would benefit from having the extra pipe in terms of HP.

Sweet, that sounded like the motor the passenger buses used, which one did they use?
truckertwotimes 2 years ago
I think they used the 8V71 in the buses!
huppypuppy 2 years ago
6v92's were fairly popular in the city transit buses.

That is true, along with the 8V71N.

thats a lovely truck! did you restore it your self?
valtradrivern111 3 years ago
Is that a green motor? It doesn't sound like a silver series. It really sounds like an 8v71 to me
pete359l 3 years ago
it's a 8v92. They made non silver 8v92's which were called the 430s. They were painted green too.
Hotrodx199 2 years ago
I know that but it cracks like a 71 series. Most 92's didn't crack like the 71's ever did.
pete359l 2 years ago
$7900 for that truck??? I would love to come pick it up
