Can anybody tell me what dishes they ordered at the Chinese restaurant? I can only make out the first one (fry shrimp?) and third one (seafood soup?). How come he didn't order the PEKING DUCK!?
@2:54 the cab driver (Peter boyle) was one of Robert de Niro collegue in "Taxi Driver" (1976) Martin scorcesse. Wel just an idea how they choose their casts.
It's nice to see them humanizing the Shadow like that, showing that even the most selfless of heroes will still use their incredible mental powers to get laid.
@veeganboy Sure it isn't quite as badass, but I love all of the movie. Beats the hell out of Christopher Nolan's batman movies. I mean his movies just don't feel unique on this kind of level. The Shadow is 100 % unique.
According to Walter Gibson Cranston was trained in espionage, and stage magic. It was the radio show that gave him the cloud men mind's ability. DC comics added the illusionary ability along with ninjitsu training check out Shadow comic site for later info. I have the honor of owning a Shadow's agent ring which I wear always
@vincentcapuano he was in the military so weapons and hand to hand combat. he is also Telepathic, which allows him to know about anyone, but his main ability is Master hypnotism. when he is not making himself invisible, he is using it to erase any memory of the shadow from those that aren't his agents and know too much. It saves a hell of a lot of money on a neuralizer. His main weakness is his shadow, beacause its the only thing he cannot hide, anyone that sees it would know where he is.
@vincentcapuano well this took place in the 30s back then martial arts was not a very popular thing nor were the western world aware of it. That aside, how could a man block your punches if he can't even see you?
@vincentcapuano Jiujitsu and Judo and boxing were taught but back then if you wanted to be taught other martial arts you would have to travel to the respective countries for them.
@vincentcapuano True, he was also a dictator there though odds are he didn't have to train under it. Think about it, in a movie sense, if Cranston knew martial arts how would the Tulku's men overpower him.
@Shanethefilmmaker well he probabbly only knew the armys martial arts but the tulkus men probably had years of martial arts training and cranston proabably learned more martial arts from the tulku?
@vincentcapuano that may seem true also but Tulku's teaching seem more focused on unlocking latent psychic abilities. He would leave the physical fighting to capable men. Odds are those men learned martial arts before meeting the Tulku.
@wylon87 Alec did such a wonderful job with that laugh, too. Its chilling and funny at the same time. From a story standpoint, it seems like the laughter is part of Cranston's darker side, because it only happens when he's using his powers. Its almost like The Shadow is a manifestation of a spiritual "split personality".
two things bother me...One is how excited Baldwin gets when they hand him his drink....two is Margot Lane- shorty comes to the club by herself dressed like that and briefly pauses at the stairs for her glamour pose, then casually sits down to have a drink by herself. Attention whoring much?
@whalepieisyum : Dad told me you can always tell who the bad guy is by his always laughing. In the Shadow's case he is always fighting his dark side, so the more he uses his dark side to fight crime the more he enjoys it (ie he's borderline sociopath). Also the effect gives criminals the same impression which makes them afraid of The Shadow.
@mchief190 : Not sure about it being "woefully underrated". I think it gets the proper level of recognition that it deserves. Aside from the great opening sequence on the bridge, the rest of the movie is kinda awful. In my opinion.
What I would give to have a place like the Cobalt Club in my town. Why does every restaurant have to be 'hip and trendy'. As long as it's within a decent price an art deco club like that would do great business.
8:30 the hypnosis scene is funny, what would have been funnier would be if he did some selfish suggestions to his uncle like "You will get stuck with the dinner bill"
@xvxThexShadowxvx Is the ambush shadow figure the one that is like invisible i think have that one still I also have the one that transforms did you buy Shiwan Khan? and i still have the taxi cab
@moviefan3571 no I didn't get khan all 4 figures, the car and motorcycle came together in 1 pack and I just bought that plus my mom doesn't know and she would have a fit if she found out so I only bought those
@moviefan3571 cause she doesn't want me to waste my money but I have a job and I can pay for it. they came today and she actually was pretty ok about me getting them which was a shocker but I'm happy
@ReginaDucat It was an error in postproduction. They envisioned a massive CGI cloak that swirls in the wind as he stands there, staring the mobsters down. (You can actually catch a glimpse of the original CGI work in cutaway clips during the Taylor Dayne Music Video.) But it looked REALLY fake and didn't match up with the rest of the long take because, as you can see between 1:43 and 2:02, there's no wind on the bridge.
@ReginaDucat Capes don't sometimes fall the way you want them, they can just hang to one side more than the other. As a short time stage actor, it gets really annoying. They showed that to be more realistic clothing wise.
The best scene in the movie is that scene on the bridge. The first twenty minutes of this movie are solid gold. Everything after that just kind of falls flat. The plot, while pulpy isn't great and all of the supporting characters are just awkward comic relief. The initial scenes, where the movie kind of takes itself seriously are the best.
I love how they just use a change in lighting (and reflective contact lenses) to convey the Shadow's use of the "Jedi mind trick." Very old school, yet still visually effective.
This movie owns dude:) I remember it so well because it's one of the 1st movie i've seen where the hero/villians create illusions telepathically. Nice.
