I stand corrected in the late 70's, 76 and on cracks were discovered in the wings and later in the fuselage, which caused them to limit payload to 80%. This was until the new wings were to be installed. Being as old as I am and the fact I'm a veteran of 20 years in the Air Force. I am a tax payer, I wouldn't steer anyone wrong. I don't need sarcasm. Engines very powerful, over powered to be exact. They've been known to crack wing spars at full throttle. Smooth riding aircraft. I'd fly on it any day. I loved working on it. Huge aircraft. The engines are huge and you realize it when you help change one. As an aircraft technician I had 6 years experience on this airframe. It's just big, I mean really big. Take my word for it. It takes a lot of fuel during take-off. It takes 1.5 hours to refuel.

I logged 6981.5 hours on the C5 as an Instructor FE. That' a confortable airplane. They have 2 bunk rooms right behind the flight deck that you can sleep in. In hot climates the air conditioning was weak but once airborne it worked well. Not a very reliable airplane but it's getting better as the moderinzation program gets going and they learn to make it's mechanical systems more reliable.

Actually you don't need that many wheels to support that bird fully loaded. You need all those wheels to spread the load out to prevent cracking the runway(!) You should check out the setup under an AN-225.

I live in San Antonio Texas close to Lackland AFB and Kelly Field (no called Port of San Antonio). I have to say that the C-5 is one loud plane. It flies around the house several times before it lands....sometime two or three a day. The dogs go crazy!

Very nice! I grew up near Dover AFB and used to watch these, and then got to fly in them a few times while in the Service. They require amazingly little runway for TO and LND for such a large aircraft. Would have been more impressive with Rolls engines instead of GE, like the 747. :-)

Nice vid and great plane. Its refered to as the "aluminum overcast" by airforce personel. Its very loud when it comes here to drop off cargo. I love the sound it makes

hey jon5700, i know the trick you did to get airborne so quick. like a drag racing car, you powered up the engines to full throttle. so that when you released the brakes. the plane would get up to speed way faster because you had a short runway to work with. is that correct!?!

This is my favorite aircraft of all time. But something is missing from this one. The low creepy whine of those enormous engines. I normally get goose bumps when I hear a C-5 on takeoff, but this particular one didn't do it for me. Also, is it animated ? Can I open the nose cone or the rear cargo bay door ?

Having the flaps extended lowers the stall speed. I'm not very familiar with the C-5 so I can't tell how much flaps he's giving it. being a Short Take Off I would assume he's got them extended a bit further than he would if he was taking off on a normal runway.
