Great video. But for my small savannah, I had already left him alone for 4weeks, but now when I tried to get him out, he whips, hiss and I even got my knuckle bitten. Any guidance? Thanks in advance!
Cherrytoasterpastry... Be quiet his are just fine. People take the care of this species way too seriously, I have an adult monitor that is doing great and I've seen that website, it's total bs and demands ridiculous conditions that are unnecessarily precise.
Please don't listen to this guy's advice. It is estimated that only 1% of all savannah monitors imported in the United States live to 5 years out of the 20-30 possible. This guy is giving poor advice that WILL end up killing your pet. Google savannahmonitor(dot)org to learn how to properly care for these monitors. This guy bans and deletes comments from anyone who isn't giving him ass pats and points out how bad his advice is.
ive got 2 boscs, one meant to be female one male, they look like they are trying to breed but its the female trying to get on top of the male, is this normal, or do u think i have 2 males.??
@punkmonkey61 Many owners feed their lizards rodents but it should only be given as a "snack" once or twice a month. Rodents are cheap and partly the reason why people feed them to their monitors. Savannah's are prone to getting fat and should be fed insects like crickets, superworms, roaches, etc because thats what their diet is in nature. The hair can also accumulate in your monitors digestive tract and cause a blockage which can/will kill them.
I personally feed my monitors a very low fat/high protein canned dog food in addition to insects and they love it. It does make a mess though so its best to feed them outside of their enclosure. I also feed them in the morning so they digest their food properly under heat lamps all day. If you feed them in the afternoon and turn off their lights a few hours later they dont digest as well.
For Hatchling savannahs how much should they be feed. Like everyday, every other day or what ? I haven't found anything on how to feed them it just says what to feed them.
@REPTICsteph - There isnt a better species, its what you want to husband more, as per costing and correcting housing, a bosc (sav) is a lot cheaper than a tegu although still expensive.
wow zues is awesome dude they dont get that big here in the uk mines 2 an a half and almost 3 ft long i'd say roughly the same size as hera an on a pretty much similar diet nice 2 c someone actually looking after these gorgeous animals correctly
Nice monitors dude. What size cages do you suggest when they are about a year old? or should i just go as big as possible save money by buying or making a new one every year?
@espino419 Just put them in together and see how they do. I had an adult male and adult female in the same enclosure for months at a time but there were times when I had to separate them for a week or maybe 2 cause they would get aggressive at times but just try and make sure there both around the same size so one doesn't get dominated too much! theres always going to be 1 more dominant than the other but you dont want it to get out of hand. where 1 is getting bit everyday and picked on.
Where do you get the gizzards and hearts from? and how much and often do you feed them those? my baby Omnom (not so baby any more at 26 inches, but still) I feed him chicken jerky. I was thinking of changing his diet to chicken thighs and breasts instead. I have so many questions about him! and I feel like I may not be doing it right... thanks!
wwhat do you feed them, i dident quite hear you. i usualy feed mine a meal 1 a week 2-4 depending on the size, a few fruits, somtimes some fish, turkey or hardboilded eggs
oh, you name your lizards after greek mythology i see... i do too =) My leopard geckos name is Zues, and my bearded dragon is Ares...i hope to get a sav one day
@Und3ad50ldier their kinda like snakes, technicaly snakes dont need uvb because they get their calcium from their food ( mice ) savannah monitors are the same, however im not 100% on that, so what i did was before i had uvb i calcum dusted his food for a boost, samw with his friut salads, now i dont dust his food but i got an exo-terra "Solar Glo" bulb that provides all 3 , powerful heat, uvb amd uva the bulb costs about 60$ and needs to be replaced every year or so
my savannah is obese because of my dad feeding him junk, i am going to switch him on a insects only diet with crawfish, any advice on him to lose weight? i try to get him walking but he doesnt like the outdoors because when i take him outside, he lunges and becomes aggressive . I also give him baths with deep water to help exercise his body with less impact, its seems to help alot but i would like to get him walking with no problem. help?
@txturtlelytiger I would start by cutting back on his diet and only feeding him once a week a bath is a good idea and also taking him out of the cage and letting him roam around and exercise(making him walk) To help him walk you can take some of his food and hold it in front of him and let him follow you. Keep bathing him and let him swim a lot.
@faitiana : i am only going to feed him 2 times a week with more exercise, the swimming is good because of low impact and its also a good cardio workout, lol, my little sis's savannah died from poor diet complication (Conjestive Heart Failiure on Both Sides) - it was hard to see him suffer- i dont want that to happen to him, it was difficult to get him to eat those mealworms, i know he'll eat some crawfish. He is just adjusting , but he will get use to it. lol. thx!
Wow! I just got a Savannah four months ago and he was already around 6months old. Hey I was wondering what your opionon is on how often to feed a sav when it is a baby all the way up to adulthood. Thanks you very much for your time and great looking savs by the way.
my savannah monitor is 23 inches and little over 2 years old and i thought that was kind of small so i took him to the vet and she said zilla is a different type of savannah monitor and he is full grown but iv asked alot of people and they said that sounds stupid they never herd of a different sav monitor what do u think could there be somthin rong i can update some videos of zilla later
right now my sav is about a year, i havnt ever fed him gizzards or hearts, but where do you buy that kinda stuff? i feed him mainly pinkies and rat pups. eggs every once in a while. but i need to change it up little bit and get a little variety in there for him.

both your ur savannahs are looking sexi can u send me anymore info on them mines bout a year and a half name fluffy been like that since i brought him out of the shop i use to wrk at wot a name !!!
Not true...while uv lighting hasn't been shown to have any negative effects on lizards, there are many species that have no need for it. Many geckos do not NEED it and studies have also provided evidence that due to the thickness of the scales on a savannah monitor, they may receive little/no benefits from uv lighting. Many keepers do provide uv lighting however, in order to help try to mimic their natural environment...especially if the lizards are diurnal.
errrmmm ok. boy were do i start right havnt you ever heard of mbd metabolic bone disease a case where the bones are weak and deform it happens most comonly in bearded dragons . and yes most geckos dont need uv for the simply fact THEY COME OUT AT NIGHT!!! and there so wouldnt need it but dont go and tell these poor people who dont know anything that they dont realy need uv when most likely they realy do!!!!!!
I am very aware of MBD...I am also aware that the reptile hobby is still very new in the grand scheme of things and there are still many things that we are unsure of. As I mentioned, studies have shown that savannah monitors MAY NOT benefit from UV exposure due to the thickness of their scales. UV light does not prevent MBD...uv light allows the body to synthesize vitamin D3 which allows them to absorb calcium. While some animals do benefit from uv greatly (such as beardies), some just don't.
ahaa now there i can prove those studies wrong.. heres a little story and it is still being made as for they have not reached there final stage i bout a bosc about 6 months ago yes and so did my sisters boyfriend and he used a normal strip bulb were as I used a solo glow spot bulb and my one is 2 ft all ready and his isnt evan 1 ft if 10 inches so he has changed his bulb to the same as mine and he has already seen a dramatic change in size . and there both from the same cluch ......
and his didnt barsk before and now he does it has a strange behavour where as mine is just like a dog he is so good i will be posting a video very soon of him as he is much diffrent to the other in charictor behavour and so on he evan plays like a dog its realy wierd evan if he is not playing or not he is much dffrent to the other i havnt seen anything like it !!
That itself proves nothing...different animals often grow differently. NOW if you can repeatedly do this with identical results, then I would readily admit that you are onto something.
I have a mercury vapor bulb similar to the one you're using... I have noticed some animals did grow dramatically faster than those in the past that I'd never used an mv bulb on...but I've also had herps that grew very slowly and looked pretty poor, even with the use of an mv bulb for uv.
he big as hell for that old, i boght my male, and not sure how old he ia. the store said 4, but ur 1 year old is as long and way fatter. i think the people who sold him to the pet store miss treated him, he is blind in one eye, and walks kinda funny, he might have mbd
hey man. i sent you an email lookin for info on the variety of foods you feed your monitors and what their feeding schedule is like. if you could check that email out and get back at me i'd really appreciate it man. thanx for the info and sweet vids dude. your monitors look great.
I jst got my baby sav today and I was wondering if I should keep it in a 20 gal tank that I have or should I buy a 10 and I would like help with how to set up the enclosure
How do you tame them? I've got one, only had it for a couple of weeks, but a bit scared of picking it up as he/she whips her tail n hisses at me! its only about 7inchs long!
hey i just got mine for my birthday on july 17 and i got him home and he hasnt eaten since weave got him hes about a foot long id say but he ate like 4 crickets the last couple of days do u know anything that woulkd make him eat i tried to feed him some ground turkey but he refused that too i got good head and humidity and stuff idk what to do if it is a concern or what not i her some ppl say that they dont eat for like the firt week he in a new encloser but pleats reply back
hey do you think that they need mice and rats??? like you think they could eat anything else.... besides that...cuz my "DAD" is afraid of mice>.> and so i cant get anything that has to eat mice... so if you could tell me if they can eat anything else... that be so alsome thanks!
Dude, mine is at least a year old and he is only maybe a foot and a half. He's really picky at eating and he is what i would guess to be bipolar. What do I do to get him to grow?
sometimes he'll stick his dicks out when hes ready to mate.I freaked out te first time i seen them ,2 purple lil tubes pop out,.they have 2 dicks btw.Or take'em to the vet and get'em sexed if you cant do it.
Got a question for u... I rescued a savannah monitor that was extremely emaciated and not eating at all. I was told chicken cat food was good for putting on weight so thats what i fed for 1st 2 weeks. he will not eat crickets but wont refuse an egg, he just started eating fuzzies and baby rats. hes around 8 inches and i dont know what to do, i want to have him eat a better variety what should i offer?
beautiful lizard man, too bad here in new york they are illegal our old jack ass mayor made all iguanas, constricting snakes, and other large exotic reptiles illegal. Zeus looks really healthy..
I just purchased a Savannah Monitor from our lps. He/she is about 12" long, good body structure, eating crickets and supers right away. This is the 1st baby I have had. How long before I can start feeding it hearts and gizzards, etc... I had my 1st monitor 30 years ago, 24" and I fed it liver, mice, whole eggs, chicken parts, etc... Didn't know then what I know now.. Your videos are great, good information. Thanks
I would wait for a few month about 7 or 8 months to start feeding it stuff like gizzard and hearts. Your welcome if you have any other question please don't hesitate to ask.
You can feed them mice when they are adults and feed them plenty of crickets and cockraoches and if you want aeggs and dogfood only as a treat though.
would mind explaining how to go about sexing a savannah i have one closing in on 2 years old and ive justt assumed hes male. I really want to breed him or her with another sav and your input would be very helpful
She looks big for her age. did you say she was 8 months old?
NiREXreptiles 2 weeks ago
how big will they get
iDanGaLaNgEBiG 3 weeks ago
Zeus is a big boy, whats the biggest sav you have ever owned.. and the biggest you have seen.
I have heard about the fabled 5' sav but the biggest I have seen was Shvars 4.5' and Rusty at 4.5' in the truth about v.exanthermaticus book.
Both unverified though.
I have had a suspected female at 3.5 feet and I currently have two juvies now.
One has grown 14-22" in 2 months and the other has only grown 3" in that time... I think male and female respectively.

While some animals do benefit from uv greatly (such as beardies), some just don't.

ahaa now there i can prove those studies wrong.. heres a little story and it is still being made as for they have not reached there final stage i bout a bosc about 6 months ago yes and so did my sisters boyfriend and he used a normal strip bulb were as I used a solo glow spot bulb and my one is 2 ft all ready and his isnt evan 1 ft if 10 inches so he has changed his bulb to the same as mine and he has already seen a dramatic change in size . and there both from the same cluch ......
fwb127 2 years ago
and his didnt barsk before and now he does it has a strange behavour where as mine is just like a dog he is so good i will be posting a video very soon of him as he is much diffrent to the other in charictor behavour and so on he evan plays like a dog its realy wierd evan if he is not playing or not he is much dffrent to the other i havnt seen anything like it !!
fwb127 2 years ago
That itself proves nothing...different animals often grow differently. NOW if you can repeatedly do this with identical results, then I would readily admit that you are onto something.
I have a mercury vapor bulb similar to the one you're using... I have noticed some animals did grow dramatically faster than those in the past that I'd never used an mv bulb on...but I've also had herps that grew very slowly and looked pretty poor, even with the use of an mv bulb for uv.

Zeus looks really healthy..
niggabartlebee 2 years ago
I just purchased a Savannah Monitor from our lps. He/she is about 12" long, good body structure, eating crickets and supers right away. This is the 1st baby I have had. How long before I can start feeding it hearts and gizzards, etc... I had my 1st monitor 30 years ago, 24" and I fed it liver, mice, whole eggs, chicken parts, etc... Didn't know then what I know now.. Your videos are great, good information. Thanks
moose9900 2 years ago
I would wait for a few month about 7 or 8 months to start feeding it stuff like gizzard and hearts. Your welcome if you have any other question please don't hesitate to ask.
