I remember playing the deluxe edition in elementary school. I always set the pace to grueling and took shortcuts because that was the only way to finish it before free period ended!
From what I remember this is the second iteration of the game. The first was B&W, and was much less entertaining. At school we didn't have enough disks to go around for the good version, so sometimes you would get stuck with the crap one. Either way I would always get in trouble for just hunting and never really playing the game.
This game was fun! One time i pulled out my shotgun in the game and shot a whole bunch of animals and then i jumped off the computer and did a school shooting! Another time i played mario bros and i killed a mushroom guy and then i jumped up and ran back to school and did a school shooting. Another time I played a fishing game and then i jumped up and ran back to school and did a school shooting! If it wasn't for those games i wouldn't be in jail today! Those were the days! =D
they gave my class a version of this game in school to learn about what it was like to be a settler. by far the best thing that damned place ever did for me.
Wow, you were on the front page of the St. Cloud Times? I didn't even see that. Than again, though, I never read the newspaper anyway, hehe. The comics are good enough for me.
Well, then, all though I've seen no proof other than that very convincing paper you presented during your video, congratulations. What exactly were you on the paper for? Your books and videos about video games?
Hehe; you may be able to look for it at the St Cloud Times website. They were mostly talking about how I think games are positive rather than something negative.
Although the Apple II sound was never nearly as good as what the Commdore 64 SID chip was able to produce, this looks like an interesting game nevertheless. I'll boot up my Apple emulator one of these days and try this game out. Thanks for the great review, Matt!
I really like the commentary on this one. Very interesting and insightful into the world of politics behind the games. Also, a huge gratz on the article in the Times!
Thanks. When I heard what sounded like Bill Heinenan. By the way, after watching this video I'm re-playing Might and Magic 2. Haven't finished it nor played it in many years.
And one of the best games along with Wasteland that I ever played on my Apple IIe. =0) Installed DosBox and the game runs really well on my HP...with Windows XP. cheers :)
Nice one Matt! This one was an education for me all right! Being from the UK, I've never seen hide nor hair of this game. I wonder if there are any UK equivalents. A game where you help the inhabitants of Skara Brae battle the elements of stone age Scotland perhaps. :)
That's an interesting question. I don't know of any close equivalents, though it seems something like Civilization or one of the many games set in 19th century Europe could be relevant. Still, I think O.T. is pretty universally fun, even if you're not from the U.S.
Though Civilization is based in Europe, it is still very U.S. centric in its view of history and philosophy (and the spelling of the title - you guys like your 'Z's :D). It's still a great game, of course.
It's funny how British history games by British developers are hard to come by (excepting WWI & II games of course) - I suppose it's no bug secret that we are less fond of our history and origins than americans.
I wasn't aware of that. Is the same true of games based on Arthurian legends? I know many of the German games can be quite dark (thinking of Darklands in particular).
Right on Matt. Every time period has its own folk devils and moral panics, which, when looked back upon, appear incredibly silly. No one ever seems to learn. I guess it satisfies some inherent human need to moralise situations. It certainly satisfies various political needs! Heavy Metal music played backwards, anyone?
That's my opinion, Marcus. I think some games are certainly reprehensible and in very poor taste, but the same can be said for movies, books, magazines, etc. That doesn't mean and should never mean that ALL books, movies, and so on are violent or pornographic. It just isn't true. That kind of stuff always exists on the fringes and never represents either the mainstream nor the best examples of the genre.
Indeed. Every creative medium is capable of being harnessed in any number of ways. Which way is chosed depends on the person, the culture, the society etc etc.
Whenever someone says Oregon Trail, desyntheria comes to mind... wonder why -.-
Not a way i'd wanna go.

Bill Heineman......Burger Bill.
Helped to create the Bards Tale series with Michael Cranford. Bill also helped to design Wasteland. The precursors to Fallout 1,2, and 3. cheers =0)

Thanks for the head's up. I was aware of Bill/Rebecca's work, but didn't realize it was the same Bill. It makes sense, though.

Just asked Rebecca about this -- she did NOT work on Oregon Trail. Must have been another Bill.

I'm French and trying to think of any such games... but nothing really comes to mind.
One game though I can recall is an adventure game set in Versailles which came out in the mid 90s. Really fun and immersive, at least at the time.
