The social-economic disparity has always been self-evident. Having lived there 40-50 years ago when the 2 sides were basically divided by race. The neighborhood is built on landfill that was once marshland. The 'catwalk' that connected the 2 'cities' allowed the less fortunate easy access to the better side of town. Back in the day when Flood Park had the closest public pool. If you had the previledge of attending Belle Haven School say 45 years ago, segregation did exist.
Interesting that the name "Belle Haven", which is what the easternmost portion of Menlo Park (north of the 101 Freeway) is also called, wasn't acknowledged. But in any event, wouldn't a more focused effort to advocate for more investment in this area of the city ultimately be more successful? Or are the Council and East Menlo Park residents estranged?
if it becomes its own city, it may just become a city like EPA, which definetly has imrproved, but holds a negative repuation, better to stay linked with a rich side
