MY personal favorite way to learn stalls is to get a couple lanyards with a bunch of things that jingle. Keep stalling until you can stall without the jingle jangles making noise/minimal noise.

I notice that when you stall down you move your hand in a curve and when you stall up you go in a straight diagonal line. That's probably going to help since I was trying perpendicular lines :P
