You're VERY right that Mike had a lot of different musicians on his show...I base my Louis Armstrong impression on his appearance on Mike's show. And who could forget John and Yoko co-hosting for a week?
MAN WE LOVE YA ALEX, rest in peace my friend......maybe we can jam on the night shift when I get there......two hearts are better than one anyway.....but we won't need those old hearts........just a little bit a soul baby.
Some of you need to lighten up here! VG was really funny w/them & they were all laughing too, taking it in stride. Gary was too funny w/the young J Lennon antics w/his face & 'stroking' the neck of his guitar! Audience loved it. I was smiling the whole time! I remember all the talk shows at the time, as I'm not much younger than poor Alex was. Priceless clip! Thanks to who dug this one up! Great talent for that time! I had Soul Deep & The Letter on Reel to Reel! RIP Alex. You're home now.
This was one of my favorite songs in high school and Alex's voice was the main attraction. Really nice rock voice. I think the comedienne's name was Virginia Graham and I thought she was okay back then. BTW, Mike Douglas had so many big and small pop bands and figures on his show. It was a pretty hip thing he had going, notwithstanding the Virginia Graham-type boilerplate schtick. Safe life on the other side, Alex, and say hello to God for me.
@recordman64 I stand corrected. You have just jarred my memory. But aren't I right about Mike Douglas having a lot of different acts and musicians on?
@ruedydude Chilton was at least 18 here because "Soul Deep" was not released until 1969. But you're right about his deep voice at 16. He was 16 when "The Letter" was released.
i love their juvenile laughs when she present's their second song and how gary at 5:37 misses his cue on the playback and hurries to look like he's playing. they were just kids and i love em!
That's Mike Douglas, all right. Dumb patter, a specialty. Do you remember when Mike Douglas (a stage name) sued Michael Douglas, the actor, for daring to use his own name in the movies?
Mike Douglas was the worst talk show host of them all.
I think that lady was hitting on Gary. I also forgot how prejudiced people were back then about long hair and facial hair. Uh....now their hair doesn't even look long. So it just makes her look like a bitch.
Mike Douglas wasn't a bad guy, he was a little detached from the scene obviously. He did, however have John and Yoko on for a week and was perfectly ok with listening to their bullshit (especially Yoko).
But, the guy who really never talked down but really was the catalyst for many to launch their career, was Ed Sullivan.

I agree. Mike Douglas, despite some of his other guests such as Virginia Graham, was a class act. I remember him a little bit, I was born in 1963, & starting about 1970 (a while after this performance -- although there are occassional performances before that I remember) until he left the air, I remember always watching Douglas in the morning when I was out of school. Douglas was one of the best host w/ his wide variety of musical guests.
I loved the interview. It was cute and funny! She put them on the spot but they handled it well and it brought out their personalities. The songs were good, too.
Lets see now...I saw the Box Tops open for the Beach Boys in Connecticut in the summer of 1969...we covered in our group ...the Letter, Neon Rainbow, Soul Deep...maybe Choo, Choo Train too..i think..it's been awhile..good 60's group..:-)
Good band. Classic example of a good group with no shot of getting into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. I think that the Rascals and the Righteous Brothers beat them to the punch with the blue eyed soul sound.
21 March 2008: "Turn On A Dream" and "Soul Deep" are excellent choices, and thanks for posting the video! Both songs were aired in the fall of 1969, and listening to the sound again evokes fond memories. "Neon Rainbow," December, 1967, is equally fantastic! Excellent selections!
This is GREAT and I love these guys and their records. HOWEVER I saw them live in Nebraska once in '66 maybe '67 and Alex insisted on talking for 10 minutes between each song and he was so lame (funny now) that people actually started walking out. For real.
I remember watching Mike Douglas many years ago. I think the Box Tops was one of the greatest groups from the 60's. The song "Soul Deep" is one of my all time favorite songs. It is a great song!!
"I think the Box Tops was one of the greatest groups from the 60's. The song "Soul Deep" is one of my all time favorite songs. It is a great song!!"
The Box Tops are probably one of the most underrated groups...of all time.
I had the thrill of meeting them nearly seven years ago. I asked Garry Talley if 'Soul Deep' would have been a good song for CCR? He was intrigued by my question and agreed with me.
It's a song I remember from my youngest days and I still can't get enough of it.

I thought so, but wasn't sure. May I ask you a question? Exactly where are you? I don't mean the exact address, but what state are you in? I am in the great state of Texas, and I use this term loosely lol!!
I'm in North Carolina. My father, who is a truck driver is traveling to Texas as we speak!!! He goes to the Dallas area almost every week. How about email me here on You Tube, and I can tell you more. My name is Farrah. I know that seems obvious, but I just wanted you to know.
My name is David and I am married although not too happily married. I know that sounds harsh, but we more than not get along too well. She has a teenage son who is 17 and graduating in June from high school here in Lewisville, Tx suburb of Dallas about 19 miles North.Anyway, how about you?
I also like the "The Letter", as well as "Cry Like A Baby", but I think Alex's lead vocals on "Soul Deep" are brilliant. My personal favorite from the group was "Soul Deep", glad that this vid. is posted on youtube, I'd give it more than five stars if I could.
That old broad was sure a trip! I don't think she could handle all the testosterone on that stage. Alex and Gary are both very sexy, they just have a certain "quality" about them.
The woman announcer is Virginia Graham. Her early 1960s show in New York was called "Girl Talk" and like "The View", was targed to women, except then they were called "housewives". Virginia Graham would have cameos on "All My Children" as Erica Kane's friend in either the late 90's or early 00's.
i think that she was adorable and the boys were confused by her humor but still looked cute with their responses or lack of. would have loved to hear what they said about her backstage afterwards
I hear you. But, I'm sure she was just doing her thing and The Box Tops just happened to be on the other end. They could have been anyone as far as her shtick was concerned. They seemed to be somewhat amused by he whole thing. Great seeing Alex so young and happy. He looks nice and baked and smiley. Great vocals from him too!
Alex looks pretty baked here - all smiles. Funny lip sync/half live perormance. It's obvious Chilton isn't taking any of this seriously. He's damn patient with that obnoxious old woman and her foolish questions (why a guest is interviewing another guest is beyond me).
cuz back in the day, Mike Douglas had co-hosts for a week or so. Once he even had John and Yoko LOL. Plus Virginia Graham, for those younger posters, was an author and talk show host herself known for being pretty outspoken in her day.
Can't take away from the power of Alex' voice, no matter what.
I forgot the woman's name. She was on game shows, talk shows, etc, back in the day.

Alex Chilton had a great recording voice you can hear it in that clip. It was amazing he sang lead on The Letter at 16.

This worldly wily lady was surely hilarious and somewhat obnoxious, she was having a good time toying with the boys and squeezing their balls.

Is Alex missing some front teeth, or is it just my bad eyesight?

i think that she was adorable and the boys were confused by her humor but still looked cute with their responses or lack of. would have loved to hear what they said about her backstage afterwards
