  • Main theme gives me chills; obviously it's a well known piece, but with a melody like that, I don't know why it isn't more famous.

  • love, love, love, love. i basically almost cry every time i hear the begging measures. im learning it now, and hopefully will be able to play at least half as good as you do! well done

  • Thanks truecrypt for posting this lovely performance! Always love Richter in Schubert - sensitive, probing, but never too precious or static. What an elusive balance.

  • the video is coming :))))

  • Im playing this! Im happy i found it with richter!

  • his top note is amazing.

  • His concentration is amazing!Great.......

  • thanx TC

  • I don't like the leveled-out longlines with little weight variance.This is too streamlin-ed & mono-dimensional.However his psychologic-al atmosphere is intriguing.

  • lol...Sherman Smith strikes back? :P

  • Fantastic. Thanks for this *****

Richter's interpretation of Schubert is one of the best.

  • A matter of personal taste course, but (unlike with, say, Bach and Debussy, where you have Gould and Gieseking respectively) what other Schubert interpreters of this caliber are there? none spring to my mind...

  • @punkpoetry Radu Lupu

  • @Bruckner79 I disagree: Lupu is a fine artist, yet comparison with Richter reveals his limitations (or rather highlights Richter's genius). His Schubert is predominantly lyrical and mellow, and possesses little of Richter's depth and hypnotic quality

  • @punkpoetry and Richter is no slouch as a Debussy player either. ;-)

  • @punkpoetry

    Perhaps Alfred Brendel

  • @punkpoetry

    David Fray

  • @Crisarquipais

Fray is a lovely pianist, his comedy posturing notwithstanding, but this belongs at an entirely different level of musical and intellectual achievement

  • @punkpoetry

A matter of personal taste, as you've said.

  • @Crisarquipais

Were I in an argumentative mood, I might have qualified this, saying that a preference for Richter over Gould, or vice versa, in Bach's Italian Concerto, or Richter over Gilels, or vice versa, in the Brahms 2nd concerto, is a matter of personal taste. Whereas with Richter and David Fray, it is rather a matter of *good* taste and not quite as good a taste. In my personal opinion...
