@hejjagheterpeter i don't count Ovechkin as one of the "Russians" anymore...although he is Russian, he plays a very North American style of game and that separates him from the typical Russian game that lacks checking and pretty much all forms of decent defense and two way play that it takes to be successful in the NHL. That's why players like Semin, Zherdev, the Kostitsyns, etc get a lot of flak. However, Russians like Ovie, Datsyuk, and even the Ranger's Anisimov are solid NA style players.

He definitely embellished the falling part.....He was all alone on the goalie, he had a step on the defender, and by virtue of a little tug from behind was unable to get the shot away, this qualifies for a penalty shot. Good call by the ref, maybe a diving call could have come as well, if so he'd go to the box after his penalty shot. This is what the NHL rule book states

The refs all have to get the heads out of their asses. That should not have been a penalty shot, just a penalty. You're supposed to be awarded a penalty shot when you could have been on a breakaway(being the first person in the zone, with the puck, before anybody from the other team is).
