when i first heard this in 1980, I shaved my head, bought combact boots, told my parents to fuck off, ran away from home, moved to the lower east side of manhattan in a war zone area known as alphabet city, and got a barmaid job at CBGB's. Those were the days.
right guys .. acording to most lyric websites it says I dont trust you so why should you trust me ... but i will never change my mind that is says I dont judge you , so why do you judge me?
Great to hear this tune again, I had to bin my cassette with it on back in the 1980s because every time I played it I had to smash something up. Usually the kitchen. Not good.
this song makes me want to break into the x factor's headquarters and destroy the place with a big atom bomb. and decapitate simon cowell for good measure.
@elpistol100 I don't think anyone knows what he's saying when they first hear this, but once you look up the lyrics it's easy to get. Actually, once you start listening to the Clash regularly you get a feel for Joe's singing style & you don't have as hard a time understanding him (like when you meet a foreigner with an accent & you don't know what they're saying for like a week, but then you totally get it after that? LOL). Check out the "misheard lyrics" video for this song btw, its hilarious.
95% of teens these days listen to the same formulaic, crappy pop over and over again. If you're one of the 5% who still listens to real music, thumb this up, then copy and paste it to at least five videos. Don't let the spirit of rock and roll die!
@jfunchion100 Guns N Roses? Aerosmith? BON JOVI?? I mean, I get what you're trying to say here, but c'mon... Those bands suck too. "Formulaic, crappy"? They epitomize that, and if you don't think so then you need to listen to EVEN MORE of THE CLASH.
@iwantcompletecontrol The answer is WRONG (And I freak over The Clash)! But if you people want one that the majority of people agree on in this video, here we go:
You Say Bruno Mars, I Say New York Dolls
You Say "Sexy And I Know It", I Say "No Fun"
You Say Rhianna, I Say Ramones
You Say "Black And Yellow", I Say "London's Burning"
You Say Beiber, I Say Misfits
You Say Lady Gaga, I Say "KICK OUT THE JAMS MUTHERFUCKER"
Please Keep The Music Going. It Musn't Be Forgotten! They won't succeed!
This song is amazing. You really have to know what he's saying in order to get the full effect of it. Love the part when he says "This is Joe Public speaking! I'm controlled in the body, controlled in the mind!" (and of course, "You're my guitar hero!")
i am sooo pissed right now, fucking wating for an add to play for some shit show i dont give a shit about. I just want to hear some clash for fucks sake.
The first time I heard this single was on the Dave LEE Dickhead show @1976( he was filling in for that other twunt Tony Blackburn)he said it was one of the worst records he had ever heard. Surprisingly he played it the following day saying he had revised his opinion, it was in fact THE worst record he had ever heard, how I laughed.

@WhiteyFisk That is the most bizarre comment Ive ever heard. Who is stopping you from liking it now? For 12 years and 364 days you dislike the song, and the next day you will enjoy it. Wow. Cigarettes and toads (for those who know)
I swear the british are the most talented people on earth. when it comes to music, literature, and film they can do no wrong. the british have made my life worth living.

This song absolutely defines punk rock. I'm so glad I was 17 when this came out and I was lucky enough to be into the punk rock and new wave scenes. The Clash changed music forever.
this song is good because they were'nt scared to point out record company bs ...listen to the words .....they're first album was they're second record release in USA
I went to their first nyc gig at palladium ......they had to deal with a lot of shit
what inspired the clash to write this song is what makes it in my opinion one of the best punk rock songs ever! ...that and its obvious awesomeness
the clash were pissed at their record company, CBS records, that released their song 'remote control' without bothering to ask them.
also includes their run-ins with the cops, cause the clash used to occationally let people into their own gigs for free by letting them in through the back doors and windows haha! :D
@chefdeals Yes! That's what I keep trying to tell these damn kids these days what with their obsession with X-Box and shitty bands like Dragon Force and Kamelot. Man oh man, what are we gonna do? OTOH, I'm glad they don't get it and want to hear a billion notes and souless fretboard gymnastics that only impress their boyfriends. Great music like the Clash is best kept underground as it keeps it sacred, special for the frew the proud the ones that know what's up. Rebel Truce!!!
@pwyndam I think I knew that..def sounds better..had a girlfriend back in the day who said it was judge...I was brainwashed ...ahhhhhhhhh...any way ..what a band...it's all down hill after them! "A spliff, a pound, half a pint of brown....this is the way we spell Camden town"
@196177 Haha! I've had many an ex girlfriend steer me wrong as well mate. All downhill yes! Best band ever. Don't wanna get up to see that dawn like the day before! All the Young Punks is in my top five Clash songs. Epic!
@pwyndam the clash told us what the music biz was really like (even though they went through the usual excesses ) before punk as cook and jones (pistols)said `we thought pop stars came from outer space`
@unclemort1960 Yes, they certainly did, and turned it on its head in the process. I love the story about Simonon getting all pissed while doing the track for Guns Of Brixton while looking thru the booth glass at the corporate suits who came into the studio to check up on things. They were rebels with clues in heaps and once I found the Clash I knew I was home and not alone in this World. Millions of us like minded folk out there. Nice to meet your acquintance via online penpal. Keep in touch.
@KENNYIZZY I feel the same dude!! We have to put up with shit music like Justin Bieber... The lifestyle looked so much funner when like my parents were young.
@KENNYIZZY Wishin ain't gonna get you anywhere. I'm 22 years old, and you know what? Put this shit (and everything like the clash) on your Ipod, just filled the whole damn thing up with GOOD punk rock, put it on in your car with your friends and party your life away like it was the 1970's.
@NomadHipHop what absolutely awesome advice, just turned 22 myself and started listening to REAL punk rock... fake punk rock (in my opinion) being Simple plan etc... =/
@KENNYIZZY You really don't. I was 15 when this song came out and I was the only one I knew that listened to this kinda stuff. When you'd tell someone you were into punk, they thought you meant Blondie, Devo or the B-52s, not The Clash, Pistols and Dead Boys. And although I was lucky because there was a great punk scene in NYC, here in the US, you'd be lucky to ever catch a live punk show.
@KENNYIZZY yea man i know what you mean im the only person who has ever even heard of punk (real punk not emo crap) in my school i just wanna go out and make a band and bring it back.
All u morons...This is the greatest rock song of all-time....THE CLash......if u have no idea..about rock...it was elvis...beatles....and a long long long time until The Clash, who are one of the top 3 rock bands of all time...and they had many great songs, but COMPLETE CONTROL...is by far....the best
@seymour333 Elvis -> Beatles -> The Clash? It started with Chuck Berry and real rock was continued by the Stones more than the Beatles. You missed a few essential bands but hey those are probably hidden between the dots xD
I think it's great that The Clash are still getting people jumping, im 17 and have been listening to The Clash since i was 13, best 4 years of my life so far!
There's worse things around than Green Day. At least they actually recaptured somekind of attitude with American Idiot. Even if it is shot through with pop balladry, and just stating common thought. It's funny that there's a lot of what I'd call "real punk" that have broader sensibilities much like The Clash did. Whereas the shitty punk just sounds like punk. But shit. These punk bands with no balls or conviction I have another name for.
This was a watershed in punk history, when this came out you knew punk had come of age. Still one of the best punk songs ever if not the best. (there are several contenders for the title though)
For those who reckon The Pistols spawned The Clash, listen to the 101'ers- Joe's band before the Pistols were "created" by big Malc. The signs were all there, add Mick jones, cool Paul & mad Topper & history is written!
@civilians I don't reckon The Pistols spawned the Clash I know. The Pistols supported The 101'ers in 76. As soon as Joe heard them he knew it was his last gig with the 101'ers as he thought the Pistols style was the way forward. He later met Mick and Paul at a Pistols gig and they decided to start a band and hence, the rest is history. Do you know The Pistols played 2 benefit gigs, one of them, a kids party, in Huddersfield on xmas day 77. I believe it was for striking firemen and single parents
People keep asking when the "next Beatles" will come along. They've the missed the boat because it was the Clash. Pair this with the Pistol's "Holidays in the Sun" and you've got the best single of the Punk era - maybe any era.
Sighs , WHY on earth dont we get fuckin bands like this anymore ? I personally blame the likes of simon cowell et all , they should all be shot in the face for the assault on the nations eardrums :)
Hey don't mess around pal they were both great, the clash and the sex pistols, but the main reason i write is because i love punk and i love this band and i love this song
To the person who thinks there would have been no Clash without Sex Pistols. You do not see any members of the Clash doing butter commercials. The Sex Pistols were and still are a bunch of wankers. The Clash were far more in touch with popular feelings among youth and had better music.
@HearTheStaticNoise Agreed its the best ever Clash song, but without The Pistols there would be no Clash. And as far as songs against your record cmpany is concerned, EMI came before this.

All u morons...This is the greatest rock song of all-time....THE CLash......if u have no idea..about rock...it was elvis...beatles....and a long long long time until The Clash, who are one of the top 3 rock bands of all time...and they had many great songs, but COMPLETE CONTROL...is by far....the best
seymour333 1 year ago
@seymour333 Elvis -> Beatles -> The Clash? It started with Chuck Berry and real rock was continued by the Stones more than the Beatles. You missed a few essential bands but hey those are probably hidden between the dots xD

The signs were all there, add Mick jones, cool Paul & mad Topper & history is written!
civilians 1 year ago
@civilians I don't reckon The Pistols spawned the Clash I know. The Pistols supported The 101'ers in 76. As soon as Joe heard them he knew it was his last gig with the 101'ers as he thought the Pistols style was the way forward. He later met Mick and Paul at a Pistols gig and they decided to start a band and hence, the rest is history. Do you know The Pistols played 2 benefit gigs, one of them, a kids party, in Huddersfield on xmas day 77. I believe it was for striking firemen and single parents
bolivari62 1 year ago
People keep asking when the "next Beatles" will come along. They've the missed the boat because it was the Clash. Pair this with the Pistol's "Holidays in the Sun" and you've got the best single of the Punk era - maybe any era.

He done ads for Country Life just google John Lydon + Butter Commercial.

Sighs , WHY on earth dont we get fuckin bands like this anymore ? I personally blame the likes of simon cowell et all , they should all be shot in the face for the assault on the nations eardrums :)
oscarfish38 1 year ago
Hey don't mess around pal they were both great, the clash and the sex pistols, but the main reason i write is because i love punk and i love this band and i love this song
Misfitsarenumero1 1 year ago
To the person who thinks there would have been no Clash without Sex Pistols. You do not see any members of the Clash doing butter commercials. The Sex Pistols were and still are a bunch of wankers. The Clash were far more in touch with popular feelings among youth and had better music.
sinwow33 1 year ago
@sinwow33 what butter commercial would this be?

Greatest Punk song of all time.
In your face, aggressive, the energy of a live version. What more do you need?
Johnny "Rotten" and the gang could've only dreamed of writing a masterpiece like this.
HearTheStaticNoise 1 year ago 4
@HearTheStaticNoise Agreed its the best ever Clash song, but without The Pistols there would be no Clash. And as far as songs against your record cmpany is concerned, EMI came before this.
