  • First time listening to him, and it was a pretty excellent experience

  • chicago is the best city and this album is the best. :D

  • This reminds me of Close To Me by The Cure... Anyone else?

  • @ColorfulHyena Definitely in the breakdown -- its so blatant that I can't imagine it wasn't intentional

  • Comment removed

  • @thepafl thank you for that comment! I've been racking my brains for ages trying to work out what it sounded like!!!

  • 990 people who like great music

  • 45 people aren't hipster enough.

  • @TheCroomies I hated hipsters before it was cool to hate hipsters.

  • greatest song of the decade

  • Clearly they were going for a charlie brown vibe.

  • @juicy1517 as much as i love coldplay (they are probably my favourite band) this song has been around for quite awhile before the new album came out. so i think charlie brown has a Come on! feel the illinois! feel to it instead of the other way around

  • Is it just me or does the beginning piano remind anyone else of Charlie Brown

  • beginning sounds like Charlie Brown!

  • the internet is stupid -_-

but the song rocks though XD

  • How exactly does nickelback get brought up on a Sufjan song?

  • @MrXipetotec79 people are stupid

  • @BlueFireMai Words of wisdom.

  • @MrXipetotec79 Nickelback is considered to be a no talent pop rock band, and if you are a fan of them you are considered to be incapable of liking great music or knowing it when you hear it. but like all opinions its your choice at the end of the day to decided what is good and what isnt. Personally I cant stand Nickelback.

  • @EvilToasT09 Dude, I obviously don't like Nickelback...I was wondering why the heck people talked about them on a Sufjan song. Nickelback is an embarassment to music as far as I'm concerned. I can't even say that I respect them musically...does that clear anything for ya bra ;)

  • @MrXipetotec79 never said you liked it, its probably on the sufjan song because people consider sufjan to be great music! the complete opposite of nickelback. Sufjan <3

  • I used to like Nickelback, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

  • Reminds me of like a charlie brown christmas song

  • Charlie brown influence?

  • when i first heard this song i listened to it at least 8 times more after! i love Sufjan Stevens!

  • at 2:39 it sounds like a reference to The Cure's "Close to me".

  • @Thepafl always thought that. its like he borrowed the idea and then used nearly the same orchestration for the last one as a sort of musical citation.

  • Thankgoodness for SUFJAN!

  • Did you know that sufjan in dutch means something like dull john:P

  • Absolutly BEAUTIFUL

  • His songs are long... They make you loose track of time. LOV IS <3 :D

  • Only one line can descirbe this song: Boss sauce saucy sauce boss...

  • @MrShatteredBanana Just because you don't understand the 5/8 time signature doesn't mean it's offbeat. Some people don't know how to handle anything that isn't is 4/4 time.

  • @lefunk6 I was trolling, bro. Needed some attention. I completely understand 5/8 and I loooove Sufjan Stevens. :D

  • @MrShatteredBanana I hate you.

  • @mickzero3 :) <3

  • I think the rhythm at 0:38 is a reference to the hymn "Sing of the Lord's Goodness."

    Anyone agree?

  • @oruga101 That was the first song I thought of when I heard this!

  • 41 people aren't writing from the heart...

  • WHAT IS THIS. I DON'T EVEN...

    ITS SO EPIC.

  • @j4m3z1 yup, you are stupid. But atleast you know your stupid, so that's a good thing, right?

  • That was the happiest 6 minutes 46 seconds of my day :D

  • @J4m3z1

Dude, you are so right. What is music coming to!? A catchy, fun, brilliantly written, beautifully orchestrated song with an entire section in 5/8 time is really stupid.

Lets go listen to some tool.

    (you tool)

  • The begining reminds me or charlie brown....

  • its always fun to watch an awsome vid and then get bewildered by random anonymouse hatred in the comments section

  • This song is what introduced me to Sufjan's music back in 2005 when this was played on the radio. I was 15 at the time and I waited until the announcer said his name after 2 more random songs so I could look up more of his awesometastic music :)

  • @Babsbabet This tune was on the radio? That's so awesome

  • The tune makes me smile.:)

  • I came here because apparently smart people listen to Sufjan Stevens. I'm left wondering if I'm stupid.

  • Comment removed

  • @J4m3z1 What you like doesn't make you smart or stupid. We can't objectively state how intelligent a piece of music is (how? through complexity? any idiot can make "complex" nonsense) since music is almost entirely an emotional art. Idiots tend to label what they like as intelligent so they can act sophisticated. Taste shouldn't be about intellect, unless it's an intellectual taste. And even then, it's still a matter of taste, you like what you like.

  • @arehumansgood that's why he added the e to Illinois.

  • this song is so fucking cool

  • The beginning reminds me of Charlie Brown :) <3 Sufjan, he's magical :D

  • Also your a faggot............Sufjan is a musical genious who can play an amazing amount of instruments and can sing like a song bird

  • great song!

  • really original and amazing writing, the world(except us) is missing out

  • 37 Nickelback fans.

  • @NolanWarfare I like Nickelback and Sufjan...

  • @NolanWarfare this comment just made my day because i hate nickleback with a passion

  • i love this kind of music, the music only intellectual men listens to ...

  • @Eddtillmann

    You suck.

  • @Eddtillmann faggots like this music as well. As well as rednecks, who might not be intellectual...

    protip: you're a faggot <3

  • @LOLinFEVER i sure hope you dont think your more intellectual than a redneck because your whole comment was full of ignorance and stupidity.

    protip: your a stupid

  • @KastDND and you fail at spelling

also, that bias on 'this music is solely for intellectuals' is pretty much a fucking stupid idea. So right there, your unwarranted self-importance'ish idea of 'intellectualism' fucked things up.

blabla all you want, broski. Truth is, intellectual or not, he's got good music, so quit the elitist bullshit

    :D

  • @LOLinFEVER haha I read the previous comment you replied too. Oops, you just sounded like the typical racist asshole. My bad

    :D

  • @LOLinFEVER technically I cannot be a redneck coz I am jew.We simple order and you obey. What a pitty that your inferior complex just lets you open yr mouth on internet. No girlfriend,no job,no school.Sorry for you.

  • @Eddtillmann never said you're a redneck, protip says you're a faggot. l2read

just read the first sentence btw, as soon as I saw 'jew' i realized the rest was just random garbage.

    protip: Read the above

  • It's ok...

  • @Seikken booo!

  • win!

  • this song never ceases to fascinate me...

  • @DJBigJFTW I couldn't agree more.

  • This album haunts my dreams. I had to quit listening to it.

  • Sounds like a broadway tune... LOVE it.

  • Thank you Sufjan for making music like this! T_T

  • my friend's old band sounds just like this, he told me this was thir song, oh he so lied to me, like 4 years ago

  • @ReemeRocks

Can't blame him, I would love to have been the creator of this song.

  • 5/4

  • all i can do is shake my head

  • I used to wake up really early in the morning for work, and every day I would listen to this song on the way there. The piano intro just had that certain feel to it, like it was the start of something fresh, something new, something optimistic. Thanks Sufjan for the wonderful music.

  • @superpaulio I do the same! On the L going downtown :) I love Chicago!

  • AH!

    This is amazing.

  • I cried when I first heard this song, I fear listening to it when people are around ha.

  • Well, this ain't Disneyland MJJpwns777 and I can say what I wanna. If it sucks, then it sucks. I didn't make this music.

  • @theradashack What?? what is NWO?

  • @leocdc7 New World Order... But I doubt Sufjan has time for them, he's too busy recording 22 track albums.

  • @iamcosmichands I doubt he follow that.... he's christian according to what I've read. He's recording new music??? AWESOME :p

  • @theradashack if you dont have anything good to say then your better off keeping your comment to yourself, plus your making a pretty big assumption saying that Sufjan loves Satan. :)

  • How can you dislike this song?

  • "And I cried my self to sleep last night, for the earth and materials, they may sound just right to me" 5:39. the beauty of that ending is so breathtaking.

    nuff said..

  • This song is divine! The whole album is divine.

  • Sufjan is a warrior musician, and in an age full of mediocrity, opportunism. He is the angel of music who will redeem us from biebers, gagas, and a bunch of others. Without artist like Sufjan the music would be doomed dimension.

  • @Paolom86 Hold on a second... I LOVE Sufjan's music AND Justin Beaver AND Lady Gaga... and many others!

  • The outro!

  • This is my all-time favorite song. Definitely my pick-me-up song!

  • COOL!

  • my buddy transcribed this entire song and we're playing it for our school's battle of the bands. gonna win nbd

  • I just listened to this 10 times in a row.

    Get at me.

  • @sportsboy85 atleast 50time here

  • MY CREAM OF WHEAT INVENTED THE FERRIS WHEEL! 1:10

  • @Chipanimation I wonder how it did. O_o

  • panic attacks can be eased with sufjan

  • @youngestoftheyoungs1 yes it can!

  • I cried myself to sleep the night I heard this song... seriously.

  • 29 people are Michigan / Ohio State / Wisconsin / Indiana / Iowa fans.

  • I listen to this every single morning as I go to work and I do not regret it at all

  • I like playing this song when me and my friends are driving around the country. I feel like we're in a movie.

  • I hate to be corny but... come on! feel the joys

  • i read a quote to Close to me of Cure at 2.30,maybe it's only my sensation.Anyway epocal song, this man is really underrated.

  • @thekadath

i think you're right about the quotation.

    great song.

  • The Strings are so heart warming and beautiful, I would advise everyone to listen to this as you're going to sleep just for 5:55 "and I cried myself to sleep last night, for the earth and materials may sound just right to me"

  • Comment removed

  • I swear 4:10 - ... is like having an orgasm.. you just close your eyes an float away.. I'm weird yes i know.. but that doesn't make it less true

  • If you like this, check out Shugo Takumaru

  • oh god of progress, have you degraded or forgot us????????????? seriously???

  • I could picture this song being used in a musical.

There should be a musical about Chicago, and this album would be the soundtrack.

  • @BehemothTonic maybe, i think they could use all of his albums to make a great musical.

  • @BehemothTonic I thought the exact same thing!

  • This reminds me of St. Elmo's Fire by Brian Eno.

  • This song (and album) is easily one of the best compositions of the last decade...

... Although I think I may even like Sufjan's new album even more than this one.

  • check out my video response just above. sufjan is my brother from another mother

  • i cannot stop listening to sufjan stevens. his songs not only sound beautiful, but the lyrics are beautiful as well

  • 20 people are not feeling the illinoise, clearly. sucks for them.

  • this guy has a ridiculous amount of talent.

  • anyone know where he lifted the part around 2:30? Sounds like the Cure but maybe something else?

  • @mgizmo2005 It's the Cure, "Close to Me."

  • @mgizmo2005 i thought this everytime i listen but thought i was being silly!

  • Wow,,,,,,this song is so freaking awesome,,,,,,,so poppy and exotic,,,,,,kinda jazzy,,,,,,,and infused with an exquisite cheesy feel!!!!

  • 19 people didn't feel the Illinoise.

  • conor OBERST? phony compared with stevens. try kevin barnes

  • @whiteneptunexyz your pretentious.

  • @roastbeefdj if you say so. conor oberst might be gifted but I contend that his lyrical genius doesn't extend to his instrumentation and arrangement. sufjan and kevin are more or less one-man acts, capable of doing it all. i just don't think oberst compares, sorry.

  • @whiteneptunexyz hey man, your allowed your point of view, and clearly I have mine. But Id like to say that Conors last 2 albums (and the one in process of coming out) were all arranged by M Ward and Nate Walcott, who are 2 of the best in the business at arrangement. But hey man, I Love Sufjan, its just sure Conor isnt the best musician, but they more or less hide him and its all Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott, but yeah the older stuff was a bit rough. Take care buddy!

  • @whiteneptunexyz

If Conor is the "next" Dylan, Sufjan is the "next" Cat Stevens.

  • @9wicket yeah, he would be Sufjan 'cat' Stevens.

  • @9wicket sufjan is the first SUFJAN.... nobody comes close

  • @roastbeefdj You're. Lawlz

  • Sufjan Stevens, Jeff Tweedy, Conor Oberst and Osvaldo Paese make my faith in modern songwriting high. The best of the new school.

  • GIRLS ROCK YOUR BOYS. WE'LL GET WILD WILD WILD.

  • @VFetzero Hell yea, I was expecting some sort of parody cover of Quiet Riot. I got this instead, what the hell...

  • I actually Cried when I first heard this album. I bought it pretty much entirely impulsively when trying to find some good msuic to study to. First time I played it, it blew me away. Starting at the beuatifully melodic pinao chords of "Highland," I was blown away. Hooked. and emotionally stirred in a way no music ever has done before.

Needless to say I ended up listening to every song in the album three times in a row. and eneded up getting absolutely no studying doen that night either.

  • @C0smicMonkey I am happy for you

  • It's amazing how it sounds as good to me as it did in 2005 when it was a release and I was 15. Definitely one of my favourite records of all times.

  • The first Sufjan song I had ever heard. I remember exactly what I was doing, where I was, and the time of day :D that's an impact!

  • jacksonville is my favourite song off the album but this is a great song

  • hipsters

  • There's too much beauty on his music. I only knew Chicago, but I listened Illinoise this week, and there were moments in which I wanted to cry at the beautiful, magical, honest and purest sounds of his songs. No words can't describe what this music makes me feel. JUST AWESOME!

    THANKS :D

  • Charlie. Brown. Action.

  • In my opinion, Sufjan is best feel-good artist I know.

  • Charlie Brown theme song at the beginning?

  • @3213212321321 lol nobody likes you anyways

  • @3213212321321 your comment sound like pure crap

  • 3:40

  • 3 40- to the end Beautiful

  • wonderful!
