Well (geek alert!), Battle Royale is by the late Kinji Fukasaku and I think his son finished the sequel (I haven't seen the sequel, if you have I'd love to hear your opinion). Kitano only acts in the movie, so it's not a Kitano film in the sense that for example Violent Cop and Sonatine are, which were also directed and co-written by Kitano.

Battle Royale is great fun nevertheless.
