Modern shooters have really changed, but so has people's intrest. Some of my old favorite PS2 shooters were killzone, cold winter, project snowblind, Timesplitters and metal arms. However some of my favorite modern shooters are warhawk, battlefield 3, uncharted 3, rage, and killzone 3. What do you guys think?
@dave4shmups Nope. This one released long before the dual shock was ever released. This cam out in 1995, and I don't believe Sony had a dual analog controller until at least 1997. They did have a dual analog flight stick though.
I just wanted to say that I read your blog and thought it was absolutely excellent. thanks for sharing that, and I heartily agree, especially on the notion of level design leading to greater choice. in modern-day shooters I still start exploring (old habits die hard) and am always quite disappointed as to the emptiness that awaits me. can I ask, do you have any current-gen tips for the 90's FPS enthusiast that I might not know of, some hidden FPS gems or so? thanks!
@synthem Oh sorry, I didn't read your second post. For Current Gen, Unreal Tournament III (best bot match this generation hands down, and oldschool style play), Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena (This Riddick didn't get much attention, but it also comes with the original Riddick, so it's two in one), The Darkness (it got decent attention, but has since been forgotten), Timeshift (not the greatest, but I really liked it, feels a lot like half-Life 2), and more
@teh2Dgamer Great, thanks for your tips! I indeed remember liking Timeshift's demo, and will check out the other ones as well. I'm currently playing Bodycount, it's gotten rough reviews (and it indeed isn't perfect) but it still appeals to me in the sense that it's a game and doesn't try to hide that fact behind being 'an experience' or something (that, or maybe I just like explosions). Good luck on your vids, and here's to hoping we get some more 'classical' FPS's soon. Oh, and I love Doom.
@synthem Just really depends. Are you looking on PC or are you open to oldschool console FPS. I didn't have a PC growing up, but there are still some oldschool FPS games I want to play. That causes some compatibility issues at times. Have you played the original Unreal? Not UT, but Old unreal? There's also the Blood series that are popular (I own the second, but have never played the original), Shadow Warrior, and Star Wars Dark Forces, and Jedi knight: Dark Forces II. and more
@teh2Dgamer well... im finished the blog text and i must really say : your damn right ! ive played many games in the years and today its just the miserable generation ever for gamers like me and you .But i still didnt get it why games like COD getting so much praise for bad design , no exploration and really boring gameplay ? ive played COD MW3 at my friends house and me and my friend we just gave the game back and buyed Serious sam HD for the 360. this console generation fucking sucks ass!! >=(
I also have this for my PS1, i'm mainly a PC player and when i'm not playing PC i was playing Xbox 360, so the controls were really difficult for me to use.
I normally accept stories in FPS game when the game takes itself seriously (Halo, Singularity, Bioshock, dues ex). but I'll hate the stories if theyare not done right (Halo has at least a billion plot holes to answer for after the original 3 games). I typically play shooters that would be most fun like serious sam 2, perfect dark zero ( I thought that game was fun for a prequel). I played doom on the snes and the first xbox. but at the moment I'm waiting for saints row: the third.
Ah Doom, one of the best FPS on PS1. It is a very long game and on hardest difficulty is really pain in the ass. This game rocks on PS1 with LCD screen. Music is incredible in this version so creepy. Downfall in this game is the super long password system. I always missed one number or letter and for that reason i was forced to cheat for level skip if i really want to finished the game.
This is amazingly fun even now online. I occasionally play via skulltag and that is the funnest thing EVER.

Great video!! Do you have to have the Dualshock in order to play this? I would LOVE to get Doom for the Nintendo 64, since it has all new levels.

@synthem (ps: by hidden fps gems I did mean current gen -- you already give so many good tips about older systems)
