He plays well but I like the original better, it's on the album "Rag Alhaiya Bilaval and Rag Mishra Bhairavi" (NI 5636) by Nimbus Records (it's on iTunes, search for Ram Narayan).
Please, dear Kronos, record several ragas and make a CD only of ragas, we implore you. Before this performance we were sure that Western musicians are unable to perform Hindustani music.
They're playing a transcription of a Ram Narayan alap, arranged for string quartet. Dude, your ignorance is all over youtube...you really should shut up and learn. I would suggest you start by learning to read.
@physphilmusic Its a miniature version of something called a harmonium, i think. It was usually played by beggers on a moving train or buses back home. Imagine like a piano but without electric power. You move it forward and backwards and theres air inside which produces that noise.
@sgirn507 Pianos usually aren't electrically powered. They're acoustic instruments. The harmonium is different in that the piano is a string instrument and the harmonium is a woodwind instrument.
Muito bom! Tomara que vocês venham para o Brasil!

@lenochka2221 I would not call this Hindustani music, it is not played with the right nuances. but it is pleasant to listen to and played very well

FALSE ADVERTISING using Ram Naryan's name in the title. What's the matter could you not stand on your own withthis music?

It is called a "SRUTI BOX", SURPETI- check out ALI AKBAR COLLEGE STORE, in the Harmonium section

that is a reed instrument which plays a few drone notes from which the raga unfolds.
An "Alap" is like a prayer,exploring the raga.

@theunknownpotter What's it called?

the sound of souls - being torn to shreads ... a 4:00 could do with a snappy break support from a cello though :P

If you have music inside you, you don't need it written on a pice of paper.
Indian musicians know that simple fact.

not bad, sounds like a New Age going-to-sleep music.
doesn't get close to the real sitar & tabla thing, & the singing.
i find these Kronos adaptations of 'world music' pretentious.

I saw this live at Hank Dutt's Madison recital. Possibly the greatest violist alive. Beautiful playing.
