The Mad Hatter was crazy because the hat he wore had a substance in it that caused people to lose their minds - It was a reference to something that actually happened during the earlier centuries

Absolutely. In those times, when hats were made, they dipped them in mercury to make the hair stand out. The hatters would be exposed to all that mercury for years, and it would eventually drive them insane.
