Great video !!! I too am vegan and its the BEST thing I have ever done for myself. For ME it was easy and still is. I believe my life is no more important than an animals life. I do not preach it to anyone, I only talk about it if i am asked some questions, and yes, people are a hard thing to deal with being vegan.
Omg I have the SAME issue, it's so annoying! Whenever I go to my relatives house they hound me, they say I'm too skinny and I need to drink milk(even though I'm 21 and also lactose intolerant!) they won't shut up about it and they still act surprised when I say I don't eat animal products, they say one time won't hurt me but it will, I've tested and yeah it will make you sick because we are not supposed to eat those things!
You've expressed what I can't eloborate to other people, as if my thoughts poured out of your mouth, haha. I've been a fan and when I go back and watch vids like this it empowers my motivation :).
Every day at school on the field these boys walk by me and say things like "I had KFC last night" "I killed a cow last night" and I've even had teachers make fun of me, in 7th grade I had this teacher that wouldn't let me read the ingredients on a box of popsicles. Once he even bought a "meat lover's treat" sandwich and ate it right in front of me on purpose. People always tell me "I can't, its too hard, im not allowed too, you wont make a difference" it gets so old. Excuses excuses excuses
@ThePittieluver and what is your excuse for not punching the shit out of those kids? eh wtf youy are a vegan not a faggot and why the fuck dont u report your teacher's ass to the principal geez man where you from kansas or something?
I personally could never be a permanent vegan. Not because of the difficulty of it, because I have gone on a vegan diet to help clear my skin going through my teen years, but I don't believe in not eating things that have to do with animals. Also who am I or anyone else to say that what you believe in is wrong. It's your belief not ours. Too many people try to force their beliefs on other people. Not just when it comes to vegans but on many other subjects as well. I enjoyed your input on this :)
def when i first became a vegetarian i hated the way other people reacted and treated me, especially my own parents! i completely agree with you on that it was the hardest part, but im super glad i didnt let that discourage me too much :3
Your story was very inspiring, thanks for sharing I had a similar encounter at my mother in law's thanksgiving. She wouldn't shut up about how our future children are going to eat her food and that we cant make them be vegan... At first I was mad but now I hope she lives to see them. Shes morbidly obese and has some health problems so maybe if she would stop eating butter and hormone filled tortured animals maybe she would live to see our vegan children. 6months vegan and loving it!!!
I completely, 100 percent agree with you. I'm vegetarian transitioning into going vegan and people love to attack me out of no where for no reason. I never comment on or about what they are eating but they always seem to believe it is okay for them to make rude comments.
It's great you did this video because when I think about situations I've been in it's the meat eaters that attack me first. Like you, you don't want to make a big deal of things and you don't bring it up. Meat eaters feel guilty and attack first.
(to continue...) I had a rough transition dealing with people because my health was my issue and most people didn't understand what I was going through and that made me distant for a long time. I couldn't stomach more than 500 calories a day without throwing up, nauseous 24/7, hypothermia, anxiety attacks, etc. 1-vegan-year later I am now off all meds, have not had to see any doctors, gained back 30 pounds, and can eat about 3000+ calories a day without getting sick anymore.
I can relate. I am a gluten-free soy-free vegan and went vegan cold turkey a year ago because I was extremely sick and withering away on my deathbed from an unknown illness (one of my doctors thinks it may have been a severe gluten intolerance even though my test was negative for celiac). I dropped 70 lbs in less than two months before I went vegan, went gluten free and lost another 20 lbs. I felt better but was still severely ill and was taking 12 different meds at different times.
You know what your awesome. I can relate to what your saying on some level. People are always treating it like Im missing out on something... and then there are people who are saying oh yeah I agree with all of your reasons I just dont have the will power.
Im glad I woke up and became a Vegan. I feel so much more in touch with nature, myself and other people. I feel more love for the world than I ever have. Vegans ROCK!
I can totally relate to you, similar thing happened to me with my grandmother she couldnt understand, why I am vegan? and tried to push me to eat meat :(.I guess as you said, they do not understand and its ok, let them be , go ahead eat meat, but please please respect our wishes to be meat-free:)
They just care about you and they feel criticized or threatened by your choices because they don't understand them. Encourage your friends to watch forks over knives dot com. Good luck!
Thank you for sharing your story. I feel the same way. Just this lunch, i have been constantly attacked by friends. Btw, they are aware that i am vegan but still constantly making rude remarks that i always eat weird stuffs during meals. What is so weird when you have no meat on your plate? They would look at me with disgust on their faces. Like i was eating poop?! And they would laugh at me make fun of me calling me weird gal. It's so hard to eat nowadays! Sometimes i keep quiet because i do
Hi, even though I'm not a Vegan, I get made fun of by family and friends because I don't eat pork. So I feel your pain. You have to do what's best for you. Peace.
I eat grass-fed meat because it's okay for the environment. When I went vegan months ago, I got terrible allergies. I became way too skinny, became emaciated, my hair was greasy as hell, ... It wasn't for me, that's for sure. And don't give me the "you did it wrong" shitty answer.
yeah, same shit... i've become even more sociophobic, cuz i cannot act "normal" when ppl say killing is "ok"... Being alone is actually better sometimes...
You are SO right. I have been humiliated and attacked by every single person I have sat down to eat with. My God, it made me drop it, but only for a day. I had cow's milk and ate cheese, and by the end of the day, I just felt so awfully guilty. I know that if I go vegan, that's not gonna change anything in terms of animal suffering, but... I've been vegan for 8 months and... its just a HUGE part of my life now. I just can't give it up.
Ah, gotta be honest...your video has made veganism sound a bit scarier than it was 10 minutes ago...and I'm thinking about my own father's future reaction with dread. Serious dread.
But...I am developing serious feelings about this lifestyle. I don't know if I could eat meat anymore, and veganism just seems like the next logical step for me.
@QueenBoudiccea veganism is not scary, but people's idiocy on the other hand, truly is. I feel like I have to make a follow up video about this topic since lately things have changed for me a lot and people don't give me so much trouble as before.
@porolita22 dont let them get you down. they can claim a lack of protein, lack of calcium, lack of iron etc etc but i think veganism is great. green smoothies are awesome you should try if you havent!
@QueenBoudiccea dont be afraid to take this step. if it truly resonates within you then do it, if other people dont agree then tell them it's your life.
I totally agree with you!!!! My family is like that. And my brothers and cousins. Even if it's been years they still love to say things ! So annoying!! If I want to eat meat I will!!
I'm a vegetarian but I do not understand the not killing concept. Someone has to die so that someone may live. If you are not killing animals then you are basically killing plants and trees.
It feels good to hear what you re going thru. You re not alone.
Deep down their heart they know you re doing a good thing but they wont admit it cos they cant fight the urge & craving of meat of their tongue, they feel so low not being able to fight this simple self control.
I m sure you find the great feeling in your heart every time you eat without killing a living being....this they can never have & understand.
I just became a vegan about a month ago, my extended family still doesn't know. Waiting to see how holiday gatherings are gonna turn out now. But i don't care because im happy and that's all that matters :)
Thank you for this! Really, my dad gets mad about it all the time calling all my food "special food". GOSH it's not "SPECIAL" food. Food IS Food, why can't people understand that. Okay getting a little ranty now. Though seriously thanks for this video keep up the great work.
Your also giving up the taste, And creating the social awkwardness Like the family reunions for example. Put yourself in their mind. I do understand how they shouldnt act how they do, Its hurtful. But in their mind their thinking, "why" .
Is it just cause you cant control anything else in your life, you control what you eat?
Hey, this is the first video of your channel i've watched and and liked it. I intend on being vegetarian, and this video shows the principal difficult that i have faced before when i tried to be a vegetarian: to deal with people!
you are so right! people can be completely difficult. thats why i broke my veganism a few times the past few years- my co-workers made fun of me, I felt like an outcast when going out to eat, even some of my best friends didnt understand, family members- no one gave me the right to explain in a calm and nonharsh manner. i actually started to believe them. i think this time around i will just keep to myself and keep my views to myself. i applaud you for showing this video- GO VEGANS!
Great video, so true! What I've learned (insightful input coming) is to realise that my frustration towards these meat eating moral police investigators is caused by so much more than whatever criticism they may have said to me, and is therefore highly exaggerated, which is why we should realise this whenever someone jokes about our food preferences, since they can't possibly know that their little bit of criticism reflects upon so much more, and that we have to face the same old BS constantly.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
does this mean they cant wear leather shoes?????? go back in time. to the stone age.................................... we ate meat. wore animal skins to keep warm. ffs. get a life. its part of the carnivor life. means animals cant kill animals.
@mickcbcfc1 Here's some news pal: We're not living on the stone age anymore, ever heard of.. oh I don't know... EVOLUTION? We don't need meat to survive anymore.. we have other choices, we can make better ones. And humans, we're omnivores, not carnivores. I am healthier than I ever was when I consumed animal products.
@porolita22 im a vegetarian for 13 years now sometimes i eat cheese but their are a time wer i used to eat a pizza with no cheese just the marinara sauce and the bread but sometimes i do eat a cheese pizza. even though i get grossed out from milk i still eat cheese because its good and its good for lean mussels but only once in a while
great video, so true. I like to think that we're on the right track that people freak out like that. It's very deep. Hello! collective guilt/denial reaction! It's not us! it's them. Not all of them, but alot of them.
I am a vegetarian and I aspire to be a vegan, but I'm taking a lot of crap from my family. My mom is just waiting to hear it's okay from a doctor, which is fine. But my dad and grandmother remind that they will refuse to bring different foods into their homes just for me. The ask me about it every time they see me and every time we eat. It annoys the hell out of me because I'm not bothering them or making their lives bad...
@imarockchick More and more doctors are seeing, and more importantly telling the truth. Here's some info you can point your family to: Do Elephants Eat Cows For Protein? by Dr. Leslie Van Romer. Search for it on the web. Very good, simple, logical read on why humans dont need to eat rotting flesh. Also, the China Study by Dr. T. Colin Campbell's is very important. Scientific evidence that animal products cause cancer: watch?v=yfsT-qYeqGM. Also, if they're interested in the torture: Earthlings.
@FathomlessJoy Thanks a lot! Great information. And yes, I've seen Earthlings. It's very harsh, but it's real and has a very beautiful overall message. If my parents saw it, I don't think they would have a problem with me turning vegan...I'm doing my best:) Thanks again!
@imarockchick There are lots of other doctors with great info, but I like simple, easy, free ;) Perhaps that would be a good relationship building thing for you, or at least help express your drive to live vegan, watching Earthlings with your parents. I saw it after being vegan; but it still had a huge impact on my life. I want to caution though, it's not just your parents. Almost everyone, everywhere tells me my diet is wrong almost every day. Sometimes we have to stand alone for what is right!
@FathomlessJoy I know it's everyone. I mean, my friends already comment sometimes about me being vegetarian and I can only guess what will happen if I turn vegan. But, you're right, it is the right thing. That's why I'm willing to take all this crap every day from people, is because if they only knew, it would be them, too. Sometimes I just get discouraged from the lack of support. But, hanging in there! Thanks again!
@imarockchick Today I get energized when flesh eaters tell me I'm wrong. Why? If they think my diet is wrong, there MUST be something right about it. Most of the doctors (working for the drug companies) and the scientists (working the meat industry) and politicians (working for both) every day tell me I'm wrong. I must be right: I know in my heart, my mind, my body, and my spirit it is right. You can do this, each day you get stronger and the lies get weaker, trust me!
I do get taken the piss out of a lot and those who do it think they're 'joke' is the most original and hilarious comment ever. My attitude is "'Fuck 'em!"
If you're looking for a comeback to the "no wonder you're so thin" - I had a sweet little old lady in my taxi once who I was driving somewhere... for some reason our conversation evoked the fact that I was vegetarian. She looked up at me in the rear-view mirror with an incredulously expression on her face and said "But you're so big!". :-)
I really identify with this - I vegetarian'd when I was about 12. Fortunately, I loved to fight and was very confrontational, but the being treated differently and not being able to participate in the occasional event with extended family & friends (like the pizza thing) did get to me.
If people said stuff at your wedding, that's just dumb of them. But people should be able to discuss Veganism in a negative outlook, since you would obviously view omnivores negatively.
First of all, you look damn good already. But if you want to put a little more meat on your bones, eat more avocados and young coconuts. You will add a few pounds by eating more of them, I know from personal experience. I recently ate 4 avocados in one day and felt great. I make a guacamole salad everyday: 1 ripe avocado smashed, lemon/lime juice, diced sweet tomatoes, oregano, a pinch of iodized salt, and cover with as much lettuce as you can fit on that plate... enjoy!
I agree. I'm a freshman in high school and I've gotten so much (excuses my french) SHIT from people. But for me it's not someone offering me turkey when they know it repulses me, it's seeing people eat meat like it's nothing, it's seeing people treat animals like they're their play things. But keep fighting vegans. <3
a chick this hot shouldnt be eatin beans all day, unless ur one of those dudes who like chicks fartin on ya face cus ur a sadistic fk, they'd probably promote it
porolita, I'm not vegan anymore. I'm sad because of it. all because of a new diet I have to follow. I want to tell you that I support you and all vegans but it makes me sad that not all people (including me) can be normal and not eat meat.
I was a vegetarian once. for almost a year. I stopped because of my Family, friends attacks constantly.. But I am back to not eating animals. I love them so much, Im just done with people. [I have one of the craziest families, Im surprised I lasted that long.. but Yep, Thank you for posting this!!! You are my motivator! [btw, This is the first of your vids, Ive seen... Im looking forward to the other ones!
I can't believe that your so-called friends and family react that way still today. That is really surprising to me. I would have to say that those people really are not true friends. You may have to take a stand and tell them very firmly that this is your choice of lifestyle and if they don't like it, they don't have to but you demand respect and expect not to be criticized even if they don't agree with your choices. True friends and family support even if they don't agree 100%.
I'm not vegan or vegetarian yet, but I'm strongly considering it. I have started replacing some meals w/vegetarian meals. I figure I still have a lot to learn as far as what vegan foods can replace my non-vegan foods & still taste great. I have found that youtube & google are great resources to learn about all sorts of things.
I would have to agree that people are the biggest challenge. That's always the biggest question in my mind...how would my family react??? But that's not going to stop me.
You are amazing, and I have been treated badly too,for being vegan too. I do not like to fight, and I think we must all choose our own path. I have had people get angry with me just because I love animals. I honestly love people and animals on the same plane. To me animals and people are equal. It is o.k. for others to disagree,of course. But it is not o.k .for them to attack me,just like your cousin did to you. I am so sorry he treated you like that. You are really sweet and gentle. Beautiful.
I also wanted to tell you that I have often been the odd person in a group, and my opinions are usually not the "popular" opinion. I am vegan,I am for gay rights,I am for transgender, and intersex rights,I am for women's rights, I am totally against pornagraphy, restaurants like Hooters, women being treated like sex objects, etc. I have Christian people mad at me for being vegan and into gay/trans rights,I have most everybody getting mad at me for being a feminist and against pornagraphy.
I agree the hardest part about being vegan is the people but not just because they might question or critic it. For instance being a vegan I'm pretty disgusted at men who are huge meaters so dating can be hard.
I'm fortunate enough that my immediate family are quite supportive of my lifestyle, which loads of people find surprising seeing as we're Greek and I've been vegan since I was fifteen which many people would consider an age where you need milk ''for strong bones'' ect.
Your not alone hun... I've had like the SAME exact experiences. I started out vegetarian too, and I became a vegan about a week ago. I agree that the hardest part is the dumb ass people that dont know the truth...
A LOT OF THE TIME I THINK PEOPLE GET SO DEFENSIVE IS BECAUSE SUBCONSIUOSLY THEY KNOW THAT WHAT THEY DO IS WRONG(EATING MEAT) THEY FEEL BAD BUT KNOW THEY WILL NEVER STOP SO ATTACK AND CRITICISE PEOPLE WHO DONT EAT MEAT
Yes,i agree.A lotta people instantly thinku are a freak when they find out youre a vegan.ie.'Is soya ok?''errr....'If it makes u feel any better its even harder when u are a guy(Think about it!!)Dont let it get to u,u r betta than them x
Other people often don't annoy you, if you pretend, to do it for your health (which could be one part of your reasons for being vegan). If you say, you feel so much better being vegan, and don't want to destroy these health benefints by eating animal products. And that's a very personal decision for your own, they react less cruel to your food choices.
There are people who call themselves "home vegans". At home they are vegans, but when it comes to social occassions, they would also eat cheese, eggs,... (but no meat). I (<- vegan) could not do that, but I accept, if someone does that. :)
Vegan for 2 months and the hardest thing is probably going to a restaurant (non vegetarian/vegan).. I already know the places where they sell vegan products.
people are rude, i'm in high school and there is only one other vegan and four vegatarians. Whenever I tell people they are like WHY?!!? THATS SOO DUMB :( Thats mean ya'll so stop it, be tolerant
@chubbypekingnese I care about sentience. Plants have no brain, no central nervous system, they are alive, yes, but they are not sentient beings with an interest in life, like human and non human animals. In any case, I need plants to survive, I do not need the flesh of slaughtered beings to survive. I oppose violence, so I would never go yell at people to stop eating meat, or stupid stunts like throwing red paint, I believe education and intelligent discussions are best :)
@porolita22 You are aware that there are still people who think that dogs don't dream? If you have a dog you are aware that they do indeed have dreams, emotions, and show that have the capacity for feeling and perceiving the immediate world around them.
I'm not saying that you should NOT eat lettuce merely because it doesn't want to be eaten. That is your place on the food chain.
Being a vegan is a luxury that today affords, but it is a life choice. Just as slaughtering an animal is a choice.
@chubbypekingnese Sentience is what I am talking about, what happens inside the minds of other animals and what we as outsiders can interpret is a different story, but still not relevant. And yeah, slaughtering an animal is a choice, just like molesting children is a choice, but that doesn't make it right. You know? Why cause unnecessary pain and suffering to another sentient being when we have alternatives? That's why I'm vegan.
@porolita22 Are you equating the eating of meat to the act of sexually molesting a child?
There may be something you want to bring up with your therapist.
I just had a bologna and swiss cheese sandwich should I have to register as a sex offender?
You don't like it when your family judges your choice to the point that you cry but you are OK with passing judgement on those who chose to eat meat by equating it to sex crimes.
Will you bring up Hitler next? Intelligent discussion? i think not.
@chubbypekingnese I am not equating the two things. But just as one person has the "choice" of killing someone, in this case as you say, a cow, he could also have the "choice" of inflicting that pain and death upon a human being. That is what I am trying to say. No need to insult me. And no, killing cows is not a necessity, that is just something we do because we like how they taste. We don't need animal flesh to live a healthy life. We just don't.
@porolita22 You DID equate the 2. You said that "slaughtering animals is a choice, just like molesting children is a chioce". That wasn't a direct comparison?
You intended that I equate my actions of eating meat to the vile act of harming a child and when i called you out for the absurd comparison you backed down.
I don't think there is anything wrong with eating meat and neither do most of the population. You have made a choice that strays from the norm. You must be more tolerant of others.
@chubbypekingnese I equated the fact of making a choice that takes the life of someone, to the choice of physically harming someone. Perhaps I should have made my statement with human murder, not child molestation, but my intent was to say that just because someone "chooses" to do something doesn't mean that choice is innocent and has no repercussions. One can choose to do many things, that doesn't mean it's ok just because we have the choice to do it. Hope I have made myself clear now.
@porolita22 Harming someone IS different than harming something. I never made the arguement in this chain that Iwas in favor of harming people for food.
I can differentiate MAN from ANIMAL.
It is now clear that for you being a vegan isn't just for dietary reasons. To you it is about ideology and in your statement of how you felt attacked by family members you left out why they most likely attacked you as a response and made you cry. You look at your family with contempt because they eat meat.
@chubbypekingnese animals are not things, they are sentient beings just like us. I do look at my family with contempt, just as I would do if they were racist, and some of them are. I still love them, but do not approve of what they do, and they know this. However they are the ones attacking me because even though I do not say "you are a murderer" they feel judged by me. And I can understand why, though that is not what I intend, though I do wish they would stop, but I cannot force them.
@porolita22 let's get 1 thing straight. I am not in favor of someone making the "choice" of harming or committing a crime on anyone else.
Think of the last time you told someone that you were a vegan. You didn't just say that was your choice. You most likely went on to say that what they were doing was wrong. You judged them negatively and they acted as anyone would if you put them on the defensive.
A better way to convert people is to cook for them. Don't make absurd comparisons.
@chubbypekingnese You are asking me to think about the last time I said why I was vegan and then creating a scenario where I jump on them and condemn them? Did you have a camera spying on me or something? ;) Actually, when I am asked why I am vegan I say I am vegan because I am opposed to violence, and I don't like people inflicting violence on others on my behalf, I also say that I am vegan because non human animals have the right not to be used as objects, because they are sentient beings :)
@porolita22 As noble as you think your opinion is. Animals, including humans, will continue to use other animals as objects or just food.
Man just does it on a grand scale and we're very effiecient at what we do. Did you know that we use the entire cow (from meat, to leather, to Jello, to fertilizer)
Unless you are growing your own foods you cannot be certain that animals were not harmed to protect the crops that you eat.
Do you oppose violence to those who still enjoy their meat?
@chubbypekingnese Yes, I know that. But just because other people won't stop doesn't mean I have no reason to stop. I don't want to be a part of that, so I am vegan and do not use animal products to the extent that it is possible for me. Which is hard in this world because we use animals for everything, and it sucks, but I do what I can. And no, I do not support violence towards people who eat meat. I have seen other vegans do that but I think it's wrong.
@chubbypekingnese I disagree with you on the efficiency part. Animal agriculture is proven to be an ecological disaster. To say otherwise is to ignore facts. We are destroying our planet, but that is the way things sadly are at the moment.
@chubbypekingnese Funny that you mention that because I do cook for people all the time, and they compliment me even though I don't think of myself as a really skillful cook. And I hardly ever start the conversations about veganism, it's usually people who ask me and want to know more. I do my best not to offend people, but I am straight forward. The only reason you find my comparison absurd is if you think humans are deserving of respect and animals are only resources to use. But I don't.
@porolita22 Not all humans are deserving of respect and NO, I do not think that all animals are to used as resources. Some animals taste foul and some are for companionship.
I don't eat meat with every meal. I do enjoy a good veggie burger everyonce in a while. But nothing smells as wonderful as a rack of ribs cooking slowly over a low fire. That's the omnivore in me. I'll have some veggies with my meat.
Think back to how hard it was to convert. Why was that? It's because you enjoyed it.
@chubbypekingnese leaving meat was not difficult for me, but I get what you mean. I do have an ethical stance for my veganism, so it is not really about how easy or difficult it is. For me, all animals are the same and deserve the same respect. I don't distinguish between species in non human animals just as I don't distinguish between race amongst humans.
@porolita22 You can make a distinction between the races of humans and still treat them equally.
I don't think a lion thinks any less of the gazelle because she eats it.
it does't matter if you don't see a distinction between the species in non human animals. Your failure to recognize a distinction does not mean it's not there.
Enjoy your vegan diet but don't tell me that livestock should be afforded rights that I would give my neighbor.
Livestock lives for one purpose and that's to serve us
I totally understand you, i have been vegetarian for 10 months now, i wasnt allowed to be vegetarian until i was 17, and the most difficult part is that there is NO FAMILY SUPPORT ON THAT.
@cantcrossras No kidding. I couldn't breathe through my nose very well when I made this video because of a medical condition. I got surgery so now I can breathe better.
@porolita22 oops sorry i thought u just sucked at brething hahha well im glad ur better-brethe is aa important as food if not more-thanks for the video-stay strong if someone bothers u try to see it as a chance to educate cause those who judge like that it is because of lack of overstanding
Are you freaking kidding me?! The hardest part is not being able to eat so many delicous foods. How can you people do this I went from vegetarian to vegan recently and Im miserable? When I was veg I missed so many meat products but at least I could have things with cheese on them and some chocolate. But now thats gone too. What are we supposed to eat?
Have you ever read "Living Among Meat Eaters" By Carol J. Adams? This is a great book for vegans and vegetarians; in terms of how to deal with people who do not have the understanding, compassion and respect for these choices. You might want to consider this book to have and read. I know for me, it is such an inspiration to me and it helps me to know I am not alone. I just thought I should share this with you. Thank you.
@chrisfineart From my experience, the only reason that I know that someone is a vegan is because they procede to tell me that my food choices are bad. There doesn't seem to be an understanding, compassion, or respect for my choices. In this stream, the choice to eat meat was equated to the choice of molesting a child.
That doesn't leave much room for interpretation of how this particular vegan thinks of people who eat meat.
I don't see any tolerance in that comparison. Do you?

I agree COMPLETELY. It's not hard at all to find vegan food, but lack of support from friends and family really pisses me off. Whenever my 'friends' have a craving for something with meat in it, they have to mention it to me. Funny huh?
Got absolutely grosses me out. She also got sausage, bacon, etc. Her husband, she, and their oldest child all need to lose a ton of weight. Her youngest child doesn't eat a thing, because they don't make him eat anything healthy. He'll eat a few bites of pizza or something, but then she thinks it's weird that my husband is eating healthier, but not vegan, and that I'm vegan. My husband will eat meat every few days, but he supports me in being vegan.
You will only lose weight if you A. Aren't eating enough nutrients, or B. You're overweight to start with and then eat nutritious foods and lose weight. I went shopping with a friend today. We were supposed to only go to Big Lots, but then she said she needed to go to Wal Mart for groceries. I got some eggs(my dogs are on a raw diet), onions, water, and one or two other things. She got pop, cheese, etc. She asked me if what she got is tempting. I said no, but avoided telling her that what she
Wow! So well said!!! I totally relate and thank you for sharing!
I live with being ridiculed and misunderstood daily by meat-eating humans while I am expected to be apathetic to their contributions to the pain and suffering of fellow sentient beings and the Earth. :(
I have always found that social situations are difficult to deal with and quite awkward. I find not so much in terms of anger or whatever. I dont mind people quizzing me on my philosophy (which is not actually veganism it just happens to overlap with veganism quite a lot), in fact I welcome it. When I first went vegan there was a lot of friction with my parents. Im also not at all pushy with my beliefs, however, challenge me and I will respond.

I am new to this vegan lifestyle but totally love it I been vegan since the start of this year 18 days now I've been vegetarian (again) since September 2010. My son has been the worst at asking for meat in everything I cook. I serve it up and he asks so is there any real "meat" in this. I served him TVP as nachos and said it was real meat while I ate a salad he still has no idea. My parents or husband won't even watch EARTHLINGS ! I feel you rpain and agree with you
Oh, I just hate that! Everytime I tell someone I'm vegan, they go "oh, like PETA?". "Are you going to throw a bucket of blood on me?". I just can't stand it.
It's the same with my family, my mother is tentatively uncomfortable, but my father just gets defensive and attacks. If he sees me not eating meat at the dinner table, all of these questions are rased abd I can't just simply eat in peace. I can't have a single meal with my family without the "You're not eating meat?" thing happening.
I'm a vegan, and i completely agree with you! The hardest thing to deal with is other people. My family always makes fun of me...But my mother is slowly making the transition! So i feel somewhat likes its worth it.
I was vegetarian for a few years and vegan for about 6 months. The only people who never question, attack or mock my choice are my sister (who a short while ago became a vegetarian herself) and fellow vegetarian or vegan friends, and a select few of fellow colleagues who have worked with vegetarians before.
i am not aggressive in telling my opinions to others. i eat and live the way i please, and if someone questions me on it i lay out the facts & give them book recommendations. many times i simply say "i want to live a gentle life and cause no pain to any living thing".
i don't apologize for my lifestyle, i simply live it. and i don't really have problems with getting flack from people
I don't eat meat. I'm really bad at obeying rules, so I'm gradually phasing out all animal products. I've just realised that I've eaten only vegan food for the past week, completely by accident. It's not hard!
I've found that I've even gained weight not eating meat and my (very carnivorous) boyfriend has even started defending veganism as a viable lifestyle choice! When people say that milk and eggs are necessary, he argues back as hard as any vegan I know!
when they say no wonder your so thin you say back to them , "i know right aren't i lucky i mean i dont know how you can even walk with all that extra wait".
you are absolutely right, many people tend to behave in this dictative manner (as if they are the ones not eating the meat!) usually the ones that ocupy themselves with the lives of others are the ones that need to ocupy of their own!
i feel that for me in my family it has been extremely hard even trying to explain
about my vegetaranism ways. i am not vegan yet but i have slowly
Oh.. This is so sad that you have experience such bad things. First and foremost I want to thank you for sticking to animal cruelty free diet. You are strong and I respect that. Second I find you very beautiful and you're not skinny at all! You're slim and gorgeous. People are so ignorant. Cut them off your life r if you have the energy to do it then give them some spicy sharp comebacks :) I love giving ignorant people comebacks! It makes them understand that we're unstoppable! Bless you! <3
Thank you so much for sharing this. I am currently vegetarian and I did have some experiences myself but wow it doesn't really compare to what you've been through. Anyway, I really want to thank you for posting this. Your strength through those situations can help me fight those kind of comments made from people even when it comes from the people you need support from the most, friends and family members.
I feel comforted knowing that I'm not alone. Thanks again <3
i really like this vid. you said everything right. im not vegan but i do eat alot of vegan and veggie foods and people can say really dumb stuff. i was vegetarian for a long time but every time i went to eat i get some much crap. i got mad to when my family acted like yours did. ...good vid...i feel everything you said.i like to eat in peace.
I have a hard time being just a vegetarian. I would like to go Vegan. The only thing is I have been back and forth on the vegetarian so many times some people don't believe me anymore. If I tell them I am going vegan. They will think I am crazy. I love cheese but there are replacements for that. I don't want to eat meat at all anymore.
@PlantLifePlease it is never late to do the right thing. People will be difficult whatever you do, but remember, this isn't about them, or even about you or I, it is about doing the right thing for the billions of animals enslaved and killed for their flesh and secretions, as well as entertainment and clothing... you can do it!! :)
Hello, I am writing to you from Germany today as I would like to thank you for the oustanding and honest video that you made. Thank you very much for sharing your personal insight with ua. Over-here, I heard those very same comments by family members all the time. However, I really believe that people are getting more and more accepting of vegans and vegetarians. I wish you the strength to go on on your Vegan Path. I know you've got the energy and the conviction which I really admire.
People are Hell not just for vegans..for vegetarians too!I've been through all what you said as a vegetarian and i HATE people like that, who make stupid comments and just show their ignorance! But recently,my boyfriend intruduced me to some friends, they really are wonderful people!they accepted the fact that i'm vegetarian without making stupid comments or whatever and i also managed in turning into a vegetarian one of them! They're so awesome that I don't even want to go back to my old friends!
I've been trying for a long time to become vegan, i've been a vegetarian for about 5 years but i really think im going to do it this time! I like you're vids keep em up!
Thanks for posting your thoughts. I can totally comprehend what you are saying.
I've recently just decided to become a vegan, and although having been vegetarian for many years before and being used to people making nasty comments, I didn't realize how little support people would give me. I was really excited about my decision and noone was excited with me.

It's great you did this video because when I think about situations I've been in it's the meat eaters that attack me first. Like you, you don't want to make a big deal of things and you don't bring it up. Meat eaters feel guilty and attack first.
hillseeker09 2 months ago
(to continue...) I had a rough transition dealing with people because my health was my issue and most people didn't understand what I was going through and that made me distant for a long time. I couldn't stomach more than 500 calories a day without throwing up, nauseous 24/7, hypothermia, anxiety attacks, etc. 1-vegan-year later I am now off all meds, have not had to see any doctors, gained back 30 pounds, and can eat about 3000+ calories a day without getting sick anymore.
iWrluia 3 months ago
I can relate. I am a gluten-free soy-free vegan and went vegan cold turkey a year ago because I was extremely sick and withering away on my deathbed from an unknown illness (one of my doctors thinks it may have been a severe gluten intolerance even though my test was negative for celiac). I dropped 70 lbs in less than two months before I went vegan, went gluten free and lost another 20 lbs. I felt better but was still severely ill and was taking 12 different meds at different times.
iWrluia 3 months ago
You know what your awesome. I can relate to what your saying on some level. People are always treating it like Im missing out on something... and then there are people who are saying oh yeah I agree with all of your reasons I just dont have the will power.
Im glad I woke up and became a Vegan. I feel so much more in touch with nature, myself and other people. I feel more love for the world than I ever have. Vegans ROCK!

I have enough trouble with people as it is!

Deep down their heart they know you re doing a good thing but they wont admit it cos they cant fight the urge & craving of meat of their tongue, they feel so low not being able to fight this simple self control.

Is it just cause you cant control anything else in your life, you control what you eat?

I dont judge Vegans or vegetarian's , Each can choose their own choices. My question isnt whats hard about it. Or anything like that.
My question..
Is why?
Why give up all things meat or things like milk and eggs, Especially If your healthy and in shape already.

It annoys the hell out of me because I'm not bothering them or making their lives bad...
imarockchick 7 months ago
@imarockchick More and more doctors are seeing, and more importantly telling the truth. Here's some info you can point your family to: Do Elephants Eat Cows For Protein? by Dr. Leslie Van Romer. Search for it on the web. Very good, simple, logical read on why humans dont need to eat rotting flesh. Also, the China Study by Dr. T. Colin Campbell's is very important. Scientific evidence that animal products cause cancer: watch?v=yfsT-qYeqGM. Also, if they're interested in the torture: Earthlings.
FathomlessJoy 6 months ago
@FathomlessJoy Thanks a lot! Great information. And yes, I've seen Earthlings. It's very harsh, but it's real and has a very beautiful overall message. If my parents saw it, I don't think they would have a problem with me turning vegan...I'm doing my best:) Thanks again!
imarockchick 6 months ago
@imarockchick There are lots of other doctors with great info, but I like simple, easy, free ;) Perhaps that would be a good relationship building thing for you, or at least help express your drive to live vegan, watching Earthlings with your parents. I saw it after being vegan; but it still had a huge impact on my life. I want to caution though, it's not just your parents. Almost everyone, everywhere tells me my diet is wrong almost every day. Sometimes we have to stand alone for what is right!
FathomlessJoy 6 months ago
@FathomlessJoy I know it's everyone. I mean, my friends already comment sometimes about me being vegetarian and I can only guess what will happen if I turn vegan. But, you're right, it is the right thing. That's why I'm willing to take all this crap every day from people, is because if they only knew, it would be them, too. Sometimes I just get discouraged from the lack of support. But, hanging in there! Thanks again!
imarockchick 6 months ago
@imarockchick Today I get energized when flesh eaters tell me I'm wrong. Why? If they think my diet is wrong, there MUST be something right about it. Most of the doctors (working for the drug companies) and the scientists (working the meat industry) and politicians (working for both) every day tell me I'm wrong. I must be right: I know in my heart, my mind, my body, and my spirit it is right. You can do this, each day you get stronger and the lies get weaker, trust me!

StevenBee2 8 months ago
I really identify with this - I vegetarian'd when I was about 12. Fortunately, I loved to fight and was very confrontational, but the being treated differently and not being able to participate in the occasional event with extended family & friends (like the pizza thing) did get to me.
StevenBee2 8 months ago
If people said stuff at your wedding, that's just dumb of them. But people should be able to discuss Veganism in a negative outlook, since you would obviously view omnivores negatively.
pilgrimsprogressfan 8 months ago

Beautiful.

A LOT OF THE TIME I THINK PEOPLE GET SO DEFENSIVE IS BECAUSE SUBCONSIUOSLY THEY KNOW THAT WHAT THEY DO IS WRONG(EATING MEAT) THEY FEEL BAD BUT KNOW THEY WILL NEVER STOP SO ATTACK AND CRITICISE PEOPLE WHO DONT EAT MEAT

saucypup76 10 months ago
Other people often don't annoy you, if you pretend, to do it for your health (which could be one part of your reasons for being vegan). If you say, you feel so much better being vegan, and don't want to destroy these health benefints by eating animal products. And that's a very personal decision for your own, they react less cruel to your food choices.
Ayame471989 10 months ago
There are people who call themselves "home vegans". At home they are vegans, but when it comes to social occassions, they would also eat cheese, eggs,... (but no meat). I (<- vegan) could not do that, but I accept, if someone does that. :)

Does it bug you that plants don't want to be eaten either?
If a plant has fruit it wants you to eat the fruit but plants don't want be be eaten.
Some plants have developed defenses so they won't be eaten.
Some plant have a symbiotic relationship with animals.
Are you mad at vegans who throw paint on people who wear fur? That goes farther than just disagreeable words.
Do you tell your friends that they shouldn't eat meat?
chubbypekingnese 11 months ago
@chubbypekingnese I care about sentience. Plants have no brain, no central nervous system, they are alive, yes, but they are not sentient beings with an interest in life, like human and non human animals. In any case, I need plants to survive, I do not need the flesh of slaughtered beings to survive. I oppose violence, so I would never go yell at people to stop eating meat, or stupid stunts like throwing red paint, I believe education and intelligent discussions are best :)
porolita22 11 months ago
@porolita22 You are aware that there are still people who think that dogs don't dream? If you have a dog you are aware that they do indeed have dreams, emotions, and show that have the capacity for feeling and perceiving the immediate world around them.
I'm not saying that you should NOT eat lettuce merely because it doesn't want to be eaten. That is your place on the food chain.
Being a vegan is a luxury that today affords, but it is a life choice. Just as slaughtering an animal is a choice.
chubbypekingnese 11 months ago
@chubbypekingnese Sentience is what I am talking about, what happens inside the minds of other animals and what we as outsiders can interpret is a different story, but still not relevant. And yeah, slaughtering an animal is a choice, just like molesting children is a choice, but that doesn't make it right. You know? Why cause unnecessary pain and suffering to another sentient being when we have alternatives? That's why I'm vegan.
porolita22 11 months ago
@porolita22 Are you equating the eating of meat to the act of sexually molesting a child?
There may be something you want to bring up with your therapist.
I just had a bologna and swiss cheese sandwich should I have to register as a sex offender?
You don't like it when your family judges your choice to the point that you cry but you are OK with passing judgement on those who chose to eat meat by equating it to sex crimes.
Will you bring up Hitler next? Intelligent discussion? i think not.
chubbypekingnese 11 months ago
@chubbypekingnese I am not equating the two things. But just as one person has the "choice" of killing someone, in this case as you say, a cow, he could also have the "choice" of inflicting that pain and death upon a human being. That is what I am trying to say. No need to insult me. And no, killing cows is not a necessity, that is just something we do because we like how they taste. We don't need animal flesh to live a healthy life. We just don't.
porolita22 11 months ago
@porolita22 You DID equate the 2. You said that "slaughtering animals is a choice, just like molesting children is a chioce". That wasn't a direct comparison?
You intended that I equate my actions of eating meat to the vile act of harming a child and when i called you out for the absurd comparison you backed down.
I don't think there is anything wrong with eating meat and neither do most of the population. You have made a choice that strays from the norm. You must be more tolerant of others.
chubbypekingnese 11 months ago
@chubbypekingnese I equated the fact of making a choice that takes the life of someone, to the choice of physically harming someone. Perhaps I should have made my statement with human murder, not child molestation, but my intent was to say that just because someone "chooses" to do something doesn't mean that choice is innocent and has no repercussions. One can choose to do many things, that doesn't mean it's ok just because we have the choice to do it. Hope I have made myself clear now.
porolita22 11 months ago
@porolita22 Harming someone IS different than harming something. I never made the arguement in this chain that Iwas in favor of harming people for food.
I can differentiate MAN from ANIMAL.
It is now clear that for you being a vegan isn't just for dietary reasons. To you it is about ideology and in your statement of how you felt attacked by family members you left out why they most likely attacked you as a response and made you cry. You look at your family with contempt because they eat meat.
chubbypekingnese 11 months ago
@chubbypekingnese animals are not things, they are sentient beings just like us. I do look at my family with contempt, just as I would do if they were racist, and some of them are. I still love them, but do not approve of what they do, and they know this. However they are the ones attacking me because even though I do not say "you are a murderer" they feel judged by me. And I can understand why, though that is not what I intend, though I do wish they would stop, but I cannot force them.
porolita22 11 months ago
@porolita22 let's get 1 thing straight. I am not in favor of someone making the "choice" of harming or committing a crime on anyone else.
Think of the last time you told someone that you were a vegan. You didn't just say that was your choice. You most likely went on to say that what they were doing was wrong. You judged them negatively and they acted as anyone would if you put them on the defensive.
A better way to convert people is to cook for them. Don't make absurd comparisons.
chubbypekingnese 11 months ago
@chubbypekingnese You are asking me to think about the last time I said why I was vegan and then creating a scenario where I jump on them and condemn them? Did you have a camera spying on me or something? ;) Actually, when I am asked why I am vegan I say I am vegan because I am opposed to violence, and I don't like people inflicting violence on others on my behalf, I also say that I am vegan because non human animals have the right not to be used as objects, because they are sentient beings :)
porolita22 11 months ago
@porolita22 As noble as you think your opinion is. Animals, including humans, will continue to use other animals as objects or just food.
Man just does it on a grand scale and we're very effiecient at what we do. Did you know that we use the entire cow (from meat, to leather, to Jello, to fertilizer)
Unless you are growing your own foods you cannot be certain that animals were not harmed to protect the crops that you eat.
Do you oppose violence to those who still enjoy their meat?
chubbypekingnese 11 months ago
@chubbypekingnese Yes, I know that. But just because other people won't stop doesn't mean I have no reason to stop. I don't want to be a part of that, so I am vegan and do not use animal products to the extent that it is possible for me. Which is hard in this world because we use animals for everything, and it sucks, but I do what I can. And no, I do not support violence towards people who eat meat. I have seen other vegans do that but I think it's wrong.
porolita22 11 months ago
@chubbypekingnese I disagree with you on the efficiency part. Animal agriculture is proven to be an ecological disaster. To say otherwise is to ignore facts. We are destroying our planet, but that is the way things sadly are at the moment.
porolita22 11 months ago
@chubbypekingnese Funny that you mention that because I do cook for people all the time, and they compliment me even though I don't think of myself as a really skillful cook. And I hardly ever start the conversations about veganism, it's usually people who ask me and want to know more. I do my best not to offend people, but I am straight forward. The only reason you find my comparison absurd is if you think humans are deserving of respect and animals are only resources to use. But I don't.
porolita22 11 months ago
@porolita22 Not all humans are deserving of respect and NO, I do not think that all animals are to used as resources. Some animals taste foul and some are for companionship.
I don't eat meat with every meal. I do enjoy a good veggie burger everyonce in a while. But nothing smells as wonderful as a rack of ribs cooking slowly over a low fire. That's the omnivore in me. I'll have some veggies with my meat.
Think back to how hard it was to convert. Why was that? It's because you enjoyed it.
chubbypekingnese 11 months ago
@chubbypekingnese leaving meat was not difficult for me, but I get what you mean. I do have an ethical stance for my veganism, so it is not really about how easy or difficult it is. For me, all animals are the same and deserve the same respect. I don't distinguish between species in non human animals just as I don't distinguish between race amongst humans.
porolita22 11 months ago
@porolita22 You can make a distinction between the races of humans and still treat them equally.
I don't think a lion thinks any less of the gazelle because she eats it.
it does't matter if you don't see a distinction between the species in non human animals. Your failure to recognize a distinction does not mean it's not there.
Enjoy your vegan diet but don't tell me that livestock should be afforded rights that I would give my neighbor.
Livestock lives for one purpose and that's to serve us

Have you ever read "Living Among Meat Eaters" By Carol J. Adams? This is a great book for vegans and vegetarians; in terms of how to deal with people who do not have the understanding, compassion and respect for these choices. You might want to consider this book to have and read. I know for me, it is such an inspiration to me and it helps me to know I am not alone. I just thought I should share this with you. Thank you.
chrisfineart 11 months ago

Hi Porolita,
I am new to this vegan lifestyle but totally love it I been vegan since the start of this year 18 days now I've been vegetarian (again) since September 2010.
