  • @Ikbocarter I like your perspective on the matter, it's really interesting :) Essentially, that's what Satan says in his letters: how humans were expected by their version of God to live up to their mistakes but, in reality, it was because their God created them to make these mistakes that makes the whole idea absurd. In Satan's view, it should be their God who owns up to it since he was the one who implanted the capability in them in the first place.

  • He writes these letters with puzzlement because humans seem to lack rationality and are full of contradictions in their analysis of the world. It should be noted, since this is writen from the "true" perspective of an individual who has seen God and knows how he really is, that the version of Satan we normally think of is, in this case, "false" since it falls under the definition of the bible, which is, in this case, a misconstrued version of how things really are.

  • Satan, in this case, is merely curious about one of God's myriads of creations and visits Earth to see what it's like (kind of like how humans visit foreign lands and write back home about the strange customs and ideas.) The difference here though is that Satan views the whole thing through the eyes of logic while when humans traditionally do this, it's often seen through the eyes of their own experiences, emotions, and culture.

  • It is implied that Satan, like all angels, sees the world for how it really is using logic, as if it's something that is an innate thought process in all angels. He sees that humans lack this ability without proper training (aka Science, philosophy, logic) and even then, to a limit; this, he concludes, is why they have such strange ways of seeing the world.

  • @Ikbocarter It's funny you mentioned the bible because I'm reading "Letters from the Earth", a series of essays written by Mark Twain that, through Satan's point of view through letters written to his fellow angels from Earth, points out humans warped and irrational view of God (whom they've never seen) in contrast to how He really is (from the point of view of Satan, who has seen God). It's actually quite insightful and interesting; you might enjoy it. I just Googled it and found it.

  • What are you talking about; why are you so angry? You're jumping to these rash conclusions without even investigating anything for yourself. As I said, I'm just providing suggestions and theories; it doesn't mean I believe them or even that you have to believe them. I just enjoy discussing different aspects of life, such as human behavior, rather than simply chalking them up to insipidly, stupid ideas based on opinions rather than facts.

  • I thought you might find it fascinating as well, and I thought we might have an enlighted conversation: I enjoy thinking about things and getting others to think as well: it's a wonderful aspect of the human experienve but it seems I'm just annoying you and wasting your time. I'm sorry that you think this way and want you to know I bear no ill feeling toward you. I'll stop bugging you now.

  • @Ikbocarter @Ikbocarter False literature? I don't understand what you mean. It was written by a researcher. The title is actually very misleading because the article supports the idea that males are just as empathetic, kind, and understanding as females, especially when they're young. But, as they grow up, they are "encouraged" to "act like a man" and turn away from all that "sissy, sugary, female thinking".

  • The researcher concludes that, because this kind of repression is unatural, men often do "crazy things" like become enslaved to their jobs, cheat on their wives, drink, gamble, etc., stuff like that because that's what they're inadvertantly taught is acceptable behavior for them, it's kinda sad.

  • @Ikbocarter Not to keep harping on this issue but I happend to find this article on AOL news today (yes, I STILL have AOL) and I thought you might find it interesting; I know I did:

  • Google "Huffington Post.com" and search on the website for an article entitled "Why Men Act Crazy". It's not at all about brain chemicals or genetics and stuff but a theory based on cultural upbringing.

  • @Ikbocarter Just so we're clear, these are not MY theories; they are those of the researchers that study these things-I'm mearly paraphrasing. I only went all out on this to defend myself since, according to your original comment, you accused me of not "having a mind processing thought", whatever that means. I'm honestly sorry that I offended you, that seriously wasn't my intention nor was it to sound sexist or "fucking retarded".

  • If it makes you feel better, when selecting mates, humans rate intelligence and kindness as the top two traits they look for since this is what helps humans survive their environment. By selecting others that also display and value these characteristics, they are ensuring that any offspring born to them will likely have these traits, not through genetics, but through culture; this is what makes humans human.

  • Once again, the "handicap theory" is there to explain the other behaviors humans exhibit; it's not the end-all, be-all of human behavior theories, merely a proposal that is based on sound science and observations of similar phenomenon that happens in the natural world. I hope this explanation placates you and puts an end to your misunderstanding.

  • @Ikbocarter Wow, such harsh words: why did you take this so personally? I was framing it in the context of a theory (I even used the word) that has been put forth by experts in several biology, psychology, and sociology books based on multiple studies undertaken by ethnologists, social psychologists, and human behaviorists that attempts to explain the evolutionary conundrum of why males of many species (including humans) engage in risk taking behaviors.

  • Known as the "handicap theory", the studies suggests that males who engage in behaviors that would, in our eyes, seem to reduce their chance of survival or of passing on their genes (since, in biology, this is the driving force of an organism's existence since genes live on in offspring after the parent has died) are in fact, in a paradoxical way, increasing their chance of survival by showing off to peers and perspective mates,

  • "Look how healthy and genetically fit I am! I can engage in this risky behavior that potentially jeopardizes my chances of survival and still come out on top. I MUST be hot stuff!" This impresses the females and advertizes to potential rivals the "fitness" of the male so that potentially fatal battles are avoided since, in theory, other males will know where they stand and won't find out the hard way by taking him on in what could be a one-sided fight (nature hates waste).

  • The example typically given to explain this theory is the peacock's tail: like most species, males invest relatively little energy in ensuring their offspring's survival by producing unlimited numbers of energy-cheap and easily replaced sperm throughout their reproductive lives (think quantity instead of quality).

  • The story goes that, in species like these, the females are more "choosy" over their mates because, if they're going to invest all this energy in raising offspring on their own to ensure that their genes survive into the next generation, then the male who also contributes to this future better have damn good genes as well since his role ends at conception.

  • By having a big flashy tail, he is advertizing "Look at me! I'm a walking billboard for a free lunch to a would-be predator since I stand out so much and can barely fly to save my life with this ridiculously extravagant tail!

  • Yet, here I am, in my reproductive prime able to spend vast quantities of precious energy that I could be putting into more constructive activities into something as seemingly useless as this tail because I'm so freaking healthy and have such damn good genes that I've got energy to spare!"

  • By choosing a male like this, the female is not only ensuring the survival of her offspring with healthy genes form a male, she's also ensuring the genetic future of any sons born to her since they'll have their father's looks and charms with the ladies, thus increasing their chances of passing on their own genes.

  • Just so no one gets enraged thinking I'm demeaning humans to an instinctual "prisoner of their own genes" genera the way we tend to do with animals, this is a THEORY and humans have something called free will, cultural influences, and environmental interaction, that shapes their behavior much more than it does on other living things

  • things and these, along with biological and genetic studies, are combined to form a broad picture of what shapes human behavior; not any one theory explains it all nor does it apply to every individual. This information is also based on statistics, studies, and collaborative efforts involving large groups, not any one individual so there's no need to fly off the handle as if the world was singling you out!

  • It doesn't just show that he is confident enough to risk his life or whatever to prove his dominant to the rest of his male peers, it also says to the female that his genes are so healthy and supreme that even when doing stupid shit he can survive so he must be fit and therefore worthy of passing on his genes (what's called the "handicap theory" or what not).

  • Ok, first of all, this narrator's voice is incredibly flippin' creepy. Secondly, males of MOST species (there are a few freaky-ass exceptions) engage in high risk taking behaviour because that's what females find attractive (what's called "mate selection").

  • @Psybur Mate selection? It didn't work too well if they wound up in jail.

  • @philnoll When cases like this result in an individual being "removed' from the breeding population, either through the inablility to pass on his genes, through death, or, in this case, by socially isolating himself by engaging in a behavior that the environment does not "favor" which, in this case, is reflected in the population's negative cultural outlook on "deviant behavior", it is called "dead end behavior". If this situation were in an environment were crime was a way of life. . .

  • Comment removed

  • then such behavior would be encouraged and promoted since it would be favored in that kind of environment as a useful adaptation that helped the individual survive, thus it would be a desirable trait that would want to be kept in the population and would be promoted culturally (though, it could THEORETICALLY also genetically be passed on as well if it's something hard-wired in that individual and if there was a lage enough genetic pool of other individuals who also shared those traits).

  • @Psybur I thought guys engaged in high risk behavior to impress male peers. And that many women just have a genetic defect that causes them to be attracted to trouble-makers.

  • @philnoll That's the theory anyway. And as for the genetic defect, I swear that sometimes I think it's true. We should be selecting for males that don't push it that far. There was a poll done that asked females what kind of male they would like and the majority voted for a "dangerous male". . . I'm thinking they implied the "bad boy" type or some kind of risk-taking male, something along those lines. Whenever I think of risk-taking behavior, I'm always reminded of the movies "Jackass".

  • @Psybur Perhaps society is changing much faster than the genetic code, leaving us with outmoded urges and impulses that are no longer beneficial...like putting scorpions in your underwear. lol - the jackass movies.

    It takes all kinds :-)

  • @philnoll You know, it's funny you mention that because scientist consider one of the most devastating human behaviors, which also occurs in the animal world as well, a "dead end" behavior that is encoded in the genes of some males:

  • Various anthropologists and human behaviorists pose that rape may have existed in our primitive past as a way for a male to ensure that any offspring born to the subjected female would carry their genes. This may have evolved as a way to counteract female selection of her mate by controlling her sexuality. It may have been a common behavior in otherwise "unappealing" males that would not have been chosen by perspective females.

  • This behavior may have evolved to tip the scales in the male's favor by giving him some control over the genetic outcome. Scientists and geneticist refer to this behavior as a "genetic dead end" because, in modern times, this behavior is unnecessary to ensure the survival of the species and, tragically, can end in the murder of the female so that the victim will not be able to identify the attacker.

  • They pose that this rudimentary behavior is not supposed to exist anymore and only crops up if something goes "haywire" in the brain due to genetic, psychological, or sociological factors. There's a lot of research being done to try and eliminate these unwanted kinds of behaviors by determining their causes and finding effective ways to prevent/treat them.

  • Love how nostalgic, this video is:)

  • Ha im smarter than your normal teenager :D

  • @invaderpink ...although i blocked out a third of what he just said

  • don't join the army.

  • Inglewood Police have shot many of it's citizens. Just living there in Inglewood is high risk. Is there a video that teaches us how not to be shot by an Inglewood cop?

  • Inglewood and other areas in the L.A. County area were unlike most cities in CA today. It seems that minorities weren't even allowed to live there. How times have changed. The demographics of Inglewood and other areas like it is void of white people for the most part.

  • social approval is a driving force for getting caught on stupid petty crime, Corporate crime has no social approval, winnings are the biggest, cost to society greatest and guess what, less than 1% police resources are used for a crime that is 50x bigger than street crime.

  • cool.

  • LOL

  • JENmnh, thank you for your honest comments. However, I would respectfully disagree. The reason I personally like the video (this is my opinion only) is that it a nice change of pace from contemporary approaches.

  • Not many children these days, are willing to sit and listen to videos such as this. Even when the message is valuable.

It is simply too outdated and boring for them. Course when PSAs try to do better, it ends up being ridiculous and silly, which isn't much better.

  • The morals still have value, but society has changed.

These days, there are no curfews. Pilfering a $5 bottle of wine while paying for a $13 pack of cigarettes would be financially disadvantageous (and few kids smoke). It takes them seconds, not minutes, to steal a vehicle even with a decent security system; keys in ignition = "bait car". And theft from a shop which sells firearms is now potentially fatal.

  • Looking at Inglewood now, I am guessing the videos did not do much. I love these PSA's though.

  • I wish I would have seen this when I was growing up it might have stopped me from making some serious mistakes. Oh well, it's good to see it now. :)

  • Doublebug1, thank you for your comments!
