@350z350zify O.K., as an old bike messenger I tell you: Let it be! You have to cycle about 100-120 km per day, to get acceptable fee. In the summer with 35 degree Celsius in the winter with -15 degree Celsius, and it doesn't matter if it raining or the wind blow. And it's better you're a loner., because you're alone the whole day. It seems to be romantic but it isn't. It is a really hard job. But if you got no problems with it, o.k. than i is a cool job.

Great vid, josh. I was on the road from 1975-87. Held the world record for highest daily gross all through the seventies. Funny thing is spandex suited dudes go blowing by me all the time as I cruise the outer boroughs. My attitude is they'll never do what I did: '77, rode two miles on the FDR, biked over the Brooklyn Bridge main road, Park Avenue tunnel of death. Hate the City now, much more corporate than back in the day. Used to be more creative types. Gig will never change. though. Rock on.

Yeah,an amazing number of messengers use fixed gear bikes.

I don't think that Iwould recommend it though.Why bring more risk to a job that already has risk?If the bike had at least one set of brakes then that would be a massive improvement.

@unclechipper They are great for the city. Smaller frame is great for running through traffic. It also depends on how long you've been riding it for. I couldn't see myself working on a bike with gears all day. Too much shit to think and worry about compared to fixed and it's more expensive. You also have to more repairs on the job with a road bike.

@imputtag yes we use fixed gear and singlespeed bikes. If the city is flat and you use clips/clipless then there is no need for gears. Fixed gear is much more fun than freewheel. Work is just a game I'm being paid to play.

@Gilmancmon I was a bike messenger for 6 years. I got hit by cars twice. I was lucky i walk away. Getting "doored" is one of the worst things that can happen to a messenger. Of the three people that i know of that got "doored". None walked away. And from what i remember at least one of them sustain a broken collar bone.
