Could you please spell out the name of the town and where the shop is? I am moving to San Sebastian in a year. I am hoping that you go back to Spain at least for some period of time but knowing of other places such as this would be nice. Thank you.
Hey Simon! I've wondered for quite a while...I am Colombian-American...and when I try to explain to my family and what not, what I do...there are some 'ceramic' terms that Im not sure how to say in Spanish....Can you help? how do you say, potter's wheel? glaze? slip?
This video a testament to what a great person you are; showing off someone elses work and dedication. I'm fairly new to pottery but have watched almost everything you have posted, in a 7 day period. Simon Leach overload.
Can closed topped pots like that be done with standard mixed clay I buy for my college ceramics class? Would you be interested in showing this pot to us on the wheel? Thank you for ..... well, everything really.
(Sooooooooooooo glad your back, I missed your ever so patient voice!!) This is an odd pot, what is it??? I like working in earthenware also, it seems to be easier to work with and things just come out better. Thanks for showing us this talented young man at work.
Simon: If you have a chance, please let this young man know that I believe is work is quite beautiful & it's clear he has enormous talent. I hope there is a way to keep the studio open. BTW, how does he keep the pieces so smooth and w/o any markings? This is utterly amazing. I'd give anything to have the chance to study in your studio. I keep hoping that some fairy godmother will grant my wish to travel to Spain where I can learn from you but so far, nada. Thx 4 showing this studio. It's terrific
I see you're a busy man, but I do have a quick question if you have a chance to answer it. Why are potters, like this one featured, in decline? Is it because they cannot compete with cheaper imports, or is handmade pottery being replaced by cheap, mass produced products sold in large retail stores? Is there an entirely different reason? I'm quite curious as I'm planning to have a go at ceramics when I finish my home, (I've become a bit bored with only woodworking and desire another medium)
I'm certainly not an expert on ceramics, but as a professional artist, I'll throw in my two cents. Probably all of the reasons you've mentioned. If you try to compete with the mass producers you'll surely struggle. My advice, do what they can't do, hand made usable art.
hi - I was refering to here in Spain.Ceramics will always have am appreciation from people but they are not used to paying money for them...as an object to use ceramic has much competition these days. Here ,as an art form it has little recognition except in the way out modern sculptural pieces.i could write more.!..SL
