Back when I was in the Marines, I and about dozen guys in my company were hanging out in one of said guys' off-base house getting hammered and (among other things) watching some bootlegged uncut version of this on VHS someone picked while deployed overseas. If you've not already discovered for yourself, this scene involves two guys getting their noggins cleanly lopped off by some sort of giant...head-mower.

I find something rather darkly comic about this scene. I have no intention of watching this film (I'm afraid my stomach's not strong enough for That kind of content), but I often get curious enough to take a sneaky-peek at the less violent scenes. That may be a challenge, upon hearing the kind of things this film contains. Still, violence just about made up the history of the Roman Empire and of Ancient Rome itself...

The victim (Macro) had assassinated Tiberius at Caligula's behest, and was then himself done in by his master so Caligula wouldn't fear being betrayed himself...and to prove to Drusilla that he owed his Empire to no one.

So, yes, he did get a raw deal from Caligula but he was a right SOB anyway.

Macro was played by John Rhys-Davies in "I, Claudius"

@movitmovit This is one of the TAMEST parts of the movie (the original X-rated version). The harshest scenes include: a man slowly tortured to death. After he dies, two nymphs (who are high on something) piss on his body. He is then emasculated and his member is fed to dogs who eat it right on screen. There are also scenes of disembowelments and other gruesome tortures.

Rare is it for an American to know history your right they did not exist. the whole movie was a farce other than the Caligula family were useless parasites and vile creatures . They did kill him but sadly not like the movie ended its to bad he didnt suffer more

@wongbladehong you realise this machine never existed though. also they reckon caligula was mentally ill from a brain inflamation he suffered from when he was younger (apparently this was his mothers fault, she made him wear a miniture sodier outfit and march around, which is why his name is 'little boots' i.e. caligula, the excess heat nearly killed him and permantently damaged mentally), speaking for todays standards, he was legally insane. of course, thats just one theory.

@cologey When he first came to power, He put a lot into public works such as building temples. Shortly afterwards he got sick. A couple theory's state that he may have contracted syphilis or he may have just had a real high fever that fried his frontal lobe

@TwilightBinder The other theory is that a sweetener called defrutum was the cause. It was mixed in lead bowls and added to wine or food and since Caligula was a heavy drinker (not as much as Claudius) he likely added the sweetener which led to lead poisoning.

The sad probability is that this movie may have been one of the most accurate depictions of Rome, of that period. Gastly. NOt funny. History recors much m,ore about Caligula. He was a beast, and thank God he did not have modern weapons available. He was bad enough without them.

Aside from the 30 foot moving wall of decapitation, then yes, I would agree with and say that it's accurate in portraying the hedonism of the Romans.

But c'mon, its Hollywood. If I wanted accuracy in portraying historical events or periods, I would go elsewhere. They value money and sales, not realistic, objective depictions of history. Any idea how boring that would be to regular folk?

The wall of decapitation is a classic Caligula stunt. He also forced civilians to walk across lake spanning pontoon bridges, which his soldiers would ignite at both ends. Whole families would be "evacuated" via the bridge, only to find all egress ablaze as they arrived at the mid point. That is a historical fact. Caligula was an extremely sick bastard.
