He then brings their attention to the arm and makes them (the two girls that are watching) believe that the effect has just started. This principle is called 'dual reality'. The girl with her eyes closed has a different impression about the time the trick has started than the other two.

I think it has something to do with anticipation. If the person expects it but it not looking then there brain may produce a feeling from memory and then replay that feeling back to you. This in turn feels exactly like the person touched you when in fact they did not.

When I was living with a friend who was a woman I remember times when she would suddenly turn around and and ask me why I touched her when I was not near her.

Im not sure about this one, but i know a variation of the trick, where you close their eyes earlier on, and during the preperation (pushing their thumb in) you tap their hand, so they count the taps, but the spectators dont see this. So the spectators only count your fake taps. So really, you HAVE tapped the persons hand, but at a seperate time from when the spectator begins to count.
