  • wow if waves were like that at hb. there would be a person on every wave. i guess when a good storm comes around on the east coast you have to be picky. BARNEYSSSS!!!!!

  • man those guys are such wave-wasters

  • Yeah, I really didn't get it. I guess they ride only one perfect wave a day.

  • shoud ov seen it on the obx it was like 20 ft no lie

  • i live on the cape i havnt seen waves like this 4 years u should hav edited the surfing sucs

  • Yeah this was posted before I had any editing software. Just posted the raw footage.

  • yeah, but all that surfers sux

  • storm surge is not like a wave and cannot be ridden. storm surge is actually a "bulge" of water associated with the extrememely low pressure of a hurricane or extra-tropical cyclonic system. the bulge of water causes the tides to run very high, and often flooding low lying areas. it also allows wave action and sediment transport to occur much further inland in areas of low lying topography. just so yah know. good video, no punk rock!!!!

  • Thanks for the clarification. The first video I took this day was just down the shore at Coast Guard Beach. Normally, the water this time of years is darker blue -- but it was so obvious there -- and here, too -- how much junk had been kicked up in the water. Very green.

  • maybe edit the video next time to include more than one surfer catching something. I was expecting to see some cold water rippers show me something other than A LOT of rubber. Granted, kudos to you guys who really dig that cold water. Here's a tip, to keep warm, catch more waves. Sit on the inside if you have to. ILM, NC.

  • You're absolutely right -- this raw footage was uploaded as is, with no pretense at editing. I only jumped out of my car for as much time as it took to shoot this to test out my new camera's capabilities.

  • Swell and storm surge are two different things, altogether. Apparently, you don't know the difference.

But, what do I know? I'm only a native New Englander who's been surfing for 44 years.

You're a "body surfer"? What kind of fins do you use?

  • If you're going to get all lawyerly... but that was the definition given for "storm surge" not "swell". I've been in ocean swells and I've been in storm surge, both in the open ocean and in sheltered areas, and there is a big difference - I agree.

    Fins?

  • That's not a "storm surge". Where you from, Kansas?

  • We differ on semantics. Me, I'm just a native of the Outer Cape, a lifelong body surfer and a Master Mariner, so what the do I know? But don't take my word for it.

Answers. com defines "storm surge" as: "A rise above normal water level on the open coast due only to the action of wind stress on the water surface; includes the rise in level due to atmospheric pressure reduction as well as that due to wind stress."

So ask the surfers -- was the sea level above normal?

  • Nope, I was in a black Yahoo cap or a white Cape Cod Today hat (irony?). I'm guessing the guy you saw was from the Times.

  • Thanks for posting and the additional info, hopefully people post more pictures and videos.

  • Hey, I think I am in this video do you have any more rides?

  • Sorry, I had just come from Coast Guard where I took a shot of a few guys there. ALmost didn't even hit the brakes in the parking lot at the light -- then saw the water was lousy with you guys. Had to stop, but with no tripod, this was the best I could do. Wish I had a wetsuit.

  • sick as fuck . florida had epic surf sunday overhead! where this at?

  • Nauset Light Beach, in Eastham, Cape Cod, Mass.
