it also could end wit a 254, so watch out for that too.

I suggest that you download and install backtrack 5, as it has many other tools that are much better than Cain. If you are serious enough about this stuff, you'll be able to figure it out. Try looking into ettercap, although don't try to install it under windows, its difficult; get backtrack 5.

@thedisbatcher If they are crazy good with networking and computers, then they perhaps could. The only way they can tell is if they check their ARP table and see that they have been poisoned. If you're sniffing the average Joe who uses his comp for facebook, email, and whatever, then all they'll notice is slightly slower internet.

@themiista You did nothing wrong. The reason why it is like this, is because the passwords and username was encrypted. You have to find a way to decrypt them. There are better ways to acquiring passwords over the network. Try searching up how to set up dark comet RAT, which allows you to remotely control another person's computer, and thus gain passwords.

So, does this work only on the network your connected to or any networks in range? cause we have a motel, 2 comps are hardwired and the guests have wireless, only the 2 comps are showing up, I'm guessing I have to go wireless?

@Rangasoup Yes only on the network you are connected to. For some reason, when I try this on hotel/motel networks, it never works. In your case, because the network shouldn't be as secured, everyone should show up. However, it would be best if you have a wireless connection.

For the part where Cain is monitoring your own computer's activity, you have to make sure you do not select your own computer when adding computers to the poisoning list.

@danielgtaiv This area is not my expertise. If the password is given in a hash, you're going to have to crack it. Do some research on how to crack a hash, or do some research on rainbow tables.

@hazylarkin007 Sometimes it does this... Make sure you have selected the right adapter for sniffing in the configuration menu. If it still does this, then your adapter probably is not capable of network sniffing. It's unfortunate, but sometimes it happens :(

@10HOME10 You need to first find the wireless network, and then connect to it. If it has a password, you need to find out the password. There are ways to do this, which I won't explain now...

@Sweetwater251 Just go to your antivirus program, and disable it. You can figure this out by playing with it for a while. After downloading Cain, make sure to make it "approved" by your antivirus, so it won't remove it from your system.
