Congratulations to the pilot, he is really a boss!
Every pilot landing on kaitak was a master, and every pilot landing with such a strong wind is one as well, so doing both at the same time (and perfectly!), that's just too much!
This is called the crab technique . Touchdown skewed and then correct wheels to align with run-way. Not an easy thing to do. Thanks for all the crosswind videos. No more Kaitak however. It's like no more vinyl or tube amps for musicians. Wiki on this technique: /wiki/Crosswind_landing

Always amazing to see how low the groundspeed is on these landings--looks like the wind really picks up when you hit the bay. Very nice landing. Just hard on the tires...
Any idea what the registration was? I recently flew on a Thai 777-300 (painted in their old paint scheme) from Bangkok to the new Hong Kong International Airport. It was the first time I actually watched for and felt the sideways movement on final and the telltale hard rudder on touchdown of a crosswind landing The waves (in the water below) were huge, so I guess there was a big storm. It was fun.
@100mrpissedoff yeah this was in the 90's they had a show about it on the history channel but now hong kong has a new airport that does require a sharp turn right before it
nice de-crab landing. great video, great airport. unfortunately, there will be no new videos from kai tak :( but in the end, full safety is not ensured at VHHX
You all can see that the TG captain had the approach and landing under his controll at all time !!! The approach to the hillboard and turning into runway 13 track was smooth and established. Also prior touch-down when being hit by the crosswind the P.F. (Pilot flying, in "old" HKG alwas the CPT!!) smoothly push the paddels for the tail(fin) and the rudders to stabilize his Tripple 777 to the runways centerline !!!
Actually this is a pretty lousy landing but clearly shows how forgiving the trip 7 is. Kai Tak did have some squirrely xwinds (as does Hong Kong Intl) but these guys clearly should have gone around when they encountered that drift during the flare.
Geeze..the pilot made it look like it was just routine..he good real good...oh wait for Thai pilots landing in HKG is routine, non the less the pilot is impressive.
The 777 is the only plane i feel completely safe on, even on a 747, A330 or whatever, i never feel as relaxed and safe as on the 777. I've flown on that 777 last spring.
nope both of you are wrong its an a300-600 thai airways doesnt have an a310 in its fleet. first off the livery that thai uses in this is the retro livery which they changed in 2005, (the 777 came out much later) and second that plane doesnt have winglets and the 777 does. not only that but the flap setup is different from that of a 777, so is the fuselage. And last but not least a 777 has another set of landing gears.
2) three pairs of wheels on each main landing gear. 777 has only two main landing gears with the distinctive addition of a third pair of wheels on each of them.
supplementary info: proportion of the fuselage vs wings, as well as the shape of the tail fin. it's a 777. the absence of the raked wingtips indicates it's not a 777-300; by the way, to the best of my knowledge the 777 has never had wingtips.
@davdaninja damnnn!!! could you differ an aircraft whether it is boeing or airbus?
it is totaly BOEING!!! did you see the flaps position? the inner and outter flaps are separated each other, well, that's BOEING!!! whereas in most airbus, those inner and outter flaps are connected each other...
and finally, there is only one boeing aircraft with 3 sets of main landing gear... it is 777!!!!!!

@davdaninja - You're wrong on so many levels. This is a 777-200. The 777 has been around for over 20 years, so I literally don't know what the hell you're talking about. You seem to forget that winglets aren't on all triple seven's. Take the 757 for example.
It's a 777, A310s are long time retired, A310 looks like a fat, round nose, the 777's nose cone is extended a bit like the AC-130 but with a smooth winshield
To you and some others here, the landing here was nearing perfection and was fully up to par with the SOP on this particular type. The triple-seven (such as many other Boeing a/c, 737NG and 747 to name a few) is designed so that in a crosswind landing the pilot always decrabs after touchdown. Landing gear is built to "twist" around a little bit in this situation.
Many pilots prefer to make a low-wing crosswind approach rather than crabbing due to passenger comfort at roll-out.
@ReVolut1on7 Lol, and that's precisely why I only book flights on American-made aircraft. When I see major foreign carriers like Aeroflot still using those old Soviet-era Tu-154s it gives me the chills. Then again, I guess beyond a certain point the aircraft is only as good as the guys in the cockpit, eh?
@buzzclick500 the San Jose Intl Airport has a curfew, so certain planes aren't allowed to land in between 11pm & 6am, or the airline or owner of the plane woul get fined. Aviation enthusiasts like these kind of areas. ...and San Jose also has height restrictions for high rise buildings.
Because passengers want to go that city, and if there's one airport in the city one chance would remain. However, pilots and airline companies never risk the aircraft while landing. Comfort of the pasengers is the second issue (except g-factor). The first issue is landing the aircraft safely. Additionally pilots are trained..
Why would airlines even attempt such severe crosswind landings? Landed at SeaTac several years ago under such conditions and, given loud snapping and grinding of metal or whatever, could swear that aircraft suffered structural damage as a result. Wasn't too comfortable for passengers either. Instead of inspected for damage, watched that aircraft at SeaTac take off roughly 35 minutes later with a full load of passengers.

I was wondering watching the video what was so special about this landing. And then until the last 3 seconds before the landing. Holly Crap! that was tough, and those are very good pilots. I dont want to land like this, though I had a tough landing on JFK with Delta ...
That airport was built by British. It was military purposes, times changed and airport started to receive commercial jet liners. ;) Like pixoria's comment, that airport is closed.
body a crosswind land is when the wind is blowing from one of the side of the runway, a mean the wind is not straight whit the airplane so you have either right wind or letf and you have to crab de wings in order to land straight to the runway other wise the aricraft will float out of the ruyway see yaa.......
as a passenger , i have landed here in this airport , but havent noticedif its a crosswinds or not , lol, anybody can tell me what is a crosswinds , thanks
LRs will always have the raked wingtips and only be powered by GE90-1xxB engines.
ERs do not have the rakes, and can also be operated by Rolls Royce and Pratt&Whitney engines as well.
LRs also have larger tires, larger internal fuel tanks, the option for belly tanks, and empennage fortification; but there's no way you can tell any of that just by looking at them from the outside.
does hong kong have different laws about airplane safety because we took off during a crazy thunderstorm when i was there and there was lightning every 20 seconds. Then the turbulense was crazy and all the asian women were yelling. It was more fun than scary though.
That was some crazy crab just before touchdown, might just be the angle of the video, but it looked like the crosswind picked up a lot just before touchdown, or he was trying to fly down the centreline. I don't know.

ArmyofSeaturtles 2 years ago
That airport was built by British. It was military purposes, times changed and airport started to receive commercial jet liners. ;) Like pixoria's comment, that airport is closed.

body a crosswind land is when the wind is blowing from one of the side of the runway, a mean the wind is not straight whit the airplane so you have either right wind or letf and you have to crab de wings in order to land straight to the runway other wise the aricraft will float out of the ruyway see yaa.......

as a passenger , i have landed here in this airport , but havent noticedif its a crosswinds or not , lol, anybody can tell me what is a crosswinds , thanks

yscreth55 2 years ago
I know I was thinking 'ouch' as well. Why not give her a little rudder a the last second and get straight?
pelagic6 2 years ago 2
i think they hit some more wind last minute and if they didnt put some rudder to the right they wud hav drifted abit too far to the left

Very skilled pilot. Thai is worthy of the Star Alliance tag.

how do u know the differences between the 777-200ER and 777-200LR?
bandora11 2 years ago 2
I think you can tell them apart by the wing tips, the extended range are tiped backwards, and the LR are normal, I think, not quite 100% sure
luigiboy82 2 years ago
LR's have raked wing tips. ER's don't.
FLIGHTCOMPANY 2 years ago
LRs will always have the raked wingtips and only be powered by GE90-1xxB engines.
ERs do not have the rakes, and can also be operated by Rolls Royce and Pratt&Whitney engines as well.
LRs also have larger tires, larger internal fuel tanks, the option for belly tanks, and empennage fortification; but there's no way you can tell any of that just by looking at them from the outside.

LR has raked wingtips
aescobar32 2 years ago 4
The 777-200ER doesnt have ranked wingtip
777-200LR and 777-300ER has it.
sealalula 2 years ago 3
They don't either..

does hong kong have different laws about airplane safety because we took off during a crazy thunderstorm when i was there and there was lightning every 20 seconds. Then the turbulense was crazy and all the asian women were yelling. It was more fun than scary though.
watermelonorange 2 years ago
perfect.......nothing else
bajesus666 2 years ago
That was some crazy crab just before touchdown, might just be the angle of the video, but it looked like the crosswind picked up a lot just before touchdown, or he was trying to fly down the centreline. I don't know.
