I really envy you , your lifestyle it is so amazing. It is really admirable that how much you are sophisticated in your ways of farming and living. I like your house very calm and quiet. Thanks for posting and letting us know that there is a different world out there more pleasant and calm and natural. All the best for your constant hard work and efforts Mr. Donald
Hi! I've been watching as many of your videos as I can today, my first visit. One great little video led to another and now it's been hours watching, learning, laughing, and lovin' it. Thank you so much, Donald. I raised my four kids on a two and a half acre "mini farm" and I agree... it is far and away THE BEST lifestyle. I'm 50-something-er-other now, and still loving organic gardening on 1/3 acre. Thanks again for all the great tips and laughs. Love those dogs! :>) slowinidaho
@momheinan ... You're right about country living, I wouldn't trade for a 10 million dollar home in the city. Glad you enjoy the vids and thank you......Donald
where is your place at up here in mi i have 8.2 acres i live in a old farm house bult back in 1885 only bad thing no old barns was a dairy farm also own the house across the street with 3.86 with small barn hope to keep some cows over there this fall do you have any lie stock i raised 5 hogs last year after the butcher i brought home 960.0 of pork
HOW many times do you hill your potatoes while there growing i have hilled mine three times but i tend to cover all the green tops over with dirt is that good or not i dont remember what my grand father did to his i wish i could any advice would be good up here in mi thanks wendell and about the barn my trusses where the hardest to do
I agree on the grass cutting, mindless mowing is what I call it. I run a mid 80's Simplicity with a 38" deck and my wife keeps telling me I need a larger mower. I keep telling her I would be finished too soon and that takes away all the fun. . Take care.......10ga
If it's not too much to ask, I would really like to see what the inside of your shed and barn look like, and the measurements of the buildings. Not just snoopy, I want to put up a barn/workshop for my two tractors and about 'three tons' of tools. Watching your ladies cut up onions...wow, I can smell the onions! Not much of an onion plant I don't like. Can't wait to retire and put my plan into action. Thanks for the GREAT videos. You're a natural and you place looks great! All the best! Larry
Have you ever used a fuel stabilizer in your generator and other gasoline engines? It's my understanding that it helps to keep the gas from gumming up.
@sp00ktube ...Once you get a smell of fresh tilled soil and get passed the smell of the cows and horses, it's the only place you want to live.......Donald
Hey Donald, here's a friendly tip. When you're using a tripod with your camera and panning from side to side, it's almost always gonna get a little jumpy. If you hook a rubber band to the handle of the tripod, and pull the rubber band, the camera is gonna move very smoothly from side to side, making your lawns look even better on camera!
another great video Donald. I could live in the country. I grew up in Texas and spent every summer at my aunts in the country. My husband on the other hand is a City Boy thru and thru. When we did go for a visit I took him to my aunts place and as we drove down the road. He asked why is everyone waving that passes us. I said thats how it is out side the city limits.
@Allen2045 ... country living vs city life is like day and night. I'll take the country living anytime. Tried the city and didn't like it one bit, it's just not for me.........Donald
@palmerballer1 ... you could always load the water tank on a trailer and haul the water to the plants. I do it with the golf cart, 26 gals at a time..... Donald
thankyou Mr Donald, but my friend and I are doing about 400 yards next tomato season down in homestead florida (best farm land ever haha) and we dont wanna invest in something that wont work
i know you really dont want to but is there any way you could make a video on how you water? because I am currently trying to find a different way to irrigate because drip irrigation and plastic gets very expensive thankyou so much Mr. Donald HAYES
@palmerballer1 ... I watched your video, with a garden that size you could use a regular lawn sprinkler. Get yourself a rain gauge, put it out in the garden and turn the sprinkler on. Time how long it takes to put out one inch of water. Water 1 inch once per week. If you soil drains really well you may have to shorten the schedule to every 4-5 days..... Donald
I like this video it shows all the different things that has to be done on a farm.
It is the only true and honest way of life I think hard work never hurt anyone. Having said that we are nothing like our forefathers that came before us they could work circles around us. Keep up the great work Sir.
@henrycems ... a friend and I were talking just the other night, we don't know what hard work is today. My father and grand father knew what it was too well...... Donald
Sweet, you do a lot with a small amount of land. Well I'm having a time with the critters again, I'm thinking of making corn crib wire fence cages, around my plants What are your thoughts to keep them out.
hey mr. Donald, how do you water your field? I have a diesel pump at my house because of my avacado groves but I just dont know how I can water my large garden using the pump. thanks
@palmerballer1 ... the majority is hauled in a water tank. Takes awhile but it works. I'll water about once a week when it doesn't rain........ Donald
@woodlandcammo27 ... The way things are unfolding, I'm beginning to believe that. Maybe come November we can start turning things around at the voting booth..... Donald
Just curious....how much land do you have? I hope some day to have a nice little piece that I can have a small scale farm. I have lived in the country all my life in West Virginia and even though I like the easy access to lots of things the city has to offer but you'll never get me to live away from the country.
@webcajun Oh wow...your videos give the illusion of a really large farm. I thought for sure you were going to say you had several hundred acres...lol...but still, 7 acres makes a nice homestead. 7 would be glorious to me since I live in a small town on a .33 acre lot...lol...still managed to get my 350 sq. ft. of garden though.
Really get a big kick out of your videos Donald, keep em coming!,1? tho, just wondering if you added the ash from your cooled off burned up wood pile to your compost pile?
You are wonderful! I've been watching your videos since about 4am this morning. Sitll watching. I've learned more in a few hours from you than reading a ton of books.
Thank you so much for having such a generous heart to share. Your so informative and should have your own tv show!
You probably already know about Sta-Bil fuel treatments available to make whatever fuel you may use to power motorized equipment less harmful to the effects of time. If you do not know, you should really look into them. I have used them for several years and find them to be REAL performers. I sometimes forget to take as good care as I should with my motorized equipment and find Sta-Bil has not let me down as long as I wake up every once in a while and crank up those motors. I love the stuff!!!!!
Hey donald its Levi from florida. looks like ur livin the life. I wanted to say I was raised on a couple hundred acre cattle farm and still live here today. i agree i wouldent give up living in the country for anything. i just started vegatable gardening as you know and i raise chickens and make really small profit off there eggs too. cool video
Hey Levi ... sounds like we are both living the good life. Thinking of getting a few chickens for eggs too, I just keep putting it off......... Donald
for sure! i love havin my chickens and building a nice coop for them was fun designing it. i have helped lots of my neighbors on the dirt road build coops for their chickens they love fresh eggs. i think its defenitaly worth it. And thinking about cajan and that culture i was wondering if your into the music and food and if you eat like gator and coons and all that stuff. I know mark chessnutt has some Cajan songs that i liked pretty well.
I'm more into "Swamp Pop" music rather than the true Cajun sound. I do eat gator but coons I'm not crazy about. IMHO good cajun cooking is hard to beat. Can make you fat too. LOL ........ Donald
I feel the need to accelerate my plans to get land in the country. The only problem is I have a city wife.
I have two questions:
- Does the farm produce an income for you? I know you are retired, but just curious. I suppose if the garden saves you money at the grocery store, that could be considered the farm producing income........right?
Also, what are you doing with house house that you grew up in?
I garden mostly for my family. The little I sell is to help pay expenses. It could easily produce income if I'd decide to go that route. The house I grew up in is for sale to be moved........ Donald
Well Ive just found you and subscribed. Ive been watching your videos for a couple of hours now! Thank You for your time and sharing. Im 37 now and dyin to get back to the country. Just wish you were my neighbor down the road. AARON
Would you please make another video that is about, just the emergency generator? We want to get one but don't know what to look for, what it runs on, how to work on it, what the parts are, how to even start it- yup! not a thing! Would you shoot up-close pictures of each thing you talk about? I am desperate, I can't find any decent information. Or a really good video anywhere! I had no idea you needed to run it about every other month. I hope you can help us out:)
Hey Lisa... Since each is a little different with options I would suggest going to your local dealer and letting them help select the right one for your needs. There he can show you everything you need to know to operate and maintain your unit....... Donald
I saw you used as a feature in my horticulture class. You light up the screen every time you appear on it, I find you very entertaining and a good host. You remind me of my own grandpa, who's been growing for over 40 years. Thank you for sharing your talents.
Glad you enjoy the videos. I've designed them to give people ideas they can adapt to their situation and conditions. Keeping it simple and realizing you win some and lose some is the key to gardening....... Donald
I really enjoy watching all of your videos. I would love to live in a place like that one day as it looks so peacefull. Keep making the GREAT videos. -Rich
Love your vids and your place! I am totally envious of the life you have. Please continue to produce the vids as they are sooooo helpful to wanna be country people like myself.
I was born right here, grew up here, moved to the city and moved back here. Life is a little slower in the country which is more my speed. Glad you enjoy the vids....... Donald
I wanted to thank you for all of your videos. I am planting my first garden this year, and I have been watching all of your videos for pointers. As for living in the country, I have three acres in the country here in Arkansas. Couldnt pay me enough money to move.
3 acres gives you all the room you need to do just about anything you want. Glad to here you're starting your first garden. The more you work in it the easier it gets. Good luck and glad you enjoy the videos....... Donald
thanks for sharing your little piece of heaven on earth with us all. I really enjoyed it.. Looks like alot of work, but in the end its well worth every bit of it...
You put a little pride in everything you do on your own place. Sometimes the work is hard but you really don't mind it. Glad you enjoyed the vid...... Donald
Sir how did you end up owning such a huge land & such a beatutiful place? How much would it cost to have a land as big as yours today? I live in the city & I would love to move away.
That was a very interesting video. I love your dogs. Thanks for any info...
In Louisiana a place like mine with 2 homes and all the shops on it would probably run around 200+K. In other parts of the country it would be much, much more. Glad you enjoyed the vid...... Donald
First I want to thank you for taking the time to teach us all how to do things right. Love your vids and hope you continue to do them. Your place is AMAZING. I hope to someday have my own little farm running as smoothly as yours someday. Take care and God bless :)
Alsome place u have their man, we own a small 15 acre farm here in Jersey. Its nice u can grow tons of crops and fish in are private pond... love the vids hope you keep doing what your doing:)!!!
I read where a good gasoline engine on a generator is rated for 3000 hrs. I would think a diesel would outlast that. Question is what is more readily available in an emergency in your area, gas or diesel? My generator is gasoline and gas is more readily available here. If I were buying my first generator I would go with at least a 5500 watt unit Donald
I hope you know when you do vids. like this you just make me home sick for La. Living the good life out in the country!! Very nice place you have out there, very peaceful. Oh yeah, and I'm pretty sure that both of the dogs are already spoiled. lol Thanks again for sharing.
Looks like you are really proud of your place. Country life is the best. Thinking about doing the worm bin and a few chickens. I will keep watching to see what you do on your video's. Thanks
Great video. With all that planting you do, I expected to see a green house, but I bet you don't need it because of all the great weather you get. Country live if great!
You keep your place nice! There is nothing like the smell of fresh cut grass, I can hardly wait, it's turning greener every day...nice video as always.
What a great video. I loved it! I really enjoyed a look around ghte place. You have a beautiful homestead and I can only hope I have one like it one day, right down to the dogs! You never did mention what exactly was in the 55 gallon cup you were drinking from,I can only assume some sort of fermented beverage to go along with the great looking food! I also liked seeing your toys, generator, lawn mower and even a wench lift! I like mowing the yard too by the way, except I have to push! Thks 4 sharing

Hey donald its Levi from florida. looks like ur livin the life. I wanted to say I was raised on a couple hundred acre cattle farm and still live here today. i agree i wouldent give up living in the country for anything. i just started vegatable gardening as you know and i raise chickens and make really small profit off there eggs too. cool video
TheDixiedeerhunter 2 years ago
Hey Levi ... sounds like we are both living the good life. Thinking of getting a few chickens for eggs too, I just keep putting it off......... Donald
webcajun 2 years ago
for sure! i love havin my chickens and building a nice coop for them was fun designing it. i have helped lots of my neighbors on the dirt road build coops for their chickens they love fresh eggs. i think its defenitaly worth it. And thinking about cajan and that culture i was wondering if your into the music and food and if you eat like gator and coons and all that stuff. I know mark chessnutt has some Cajan songs that i liked pretty well.
thanks----Levi

I'm more into "Swamp Pop" music rather than the true Cajun sound. I do eat gator but coons I'm not crazy about. IMHO good cajun cooking is hard to beat. Can make you fat too. LOL ........ Donald

Thank you for the videos.
As others have said, I wish you were my neighbor.
Brian
turdface0522 2 years ago
I garden mostly for my family. The little I sell is to help pay expenses. It could easily produce income if I'd decide to go that route. The house I grew up in is for sale to be moved........ Donald

Thank you:)

Hey Lisa... Since each is a little different with options I would suggest going to your local dealer and letting them help select the right one for your needs. There he can show you everything you need to know to operate and maintain your unit....... Donald

Glad you enjoy the videos. I've designed them to give people ideas they can adapt to their situation and conditions. Keeping it simple and realizing you win some and lose some is the key to gardening....... Donald

Sir how did you end up owning such a huge land & such a beatutiful place? How much would it cost to have a land as big as yours today? I live in the city & I would love to move away.
That was a very interesting video. I love your dogs. Thanks for any info...

hey donald i was wondering if the generator is gas or diesel and if you liked gas or diesel better
edgerfriendly99 2 years ago
I read where a good gasoline engine on a generator is rated for 3000 hrs. I would think a diesel would outlast that. Question is what is more readily available in an emergency in your area, gas or diesel? My generator is gasoline and gas is more readily available here. If I were buying my first generator I would go with at least a 5500 watt unit Donald
