  • Use to go to Herb Ellis guitar clinics, and the man always knocked me out. He made it look so damn easy. RIP Mr. Herb, your work on earth is done. Thank you so much for turning me on to swing-jazz guitar. You were a classic.

  • Alas, Herb died March 28, 2010. Great guitarist, sadly missed.

    so awesome.

    You will be missed.

  • What's the thing called that's built into his guitar above the first fret that silences the strings?

  • @kjuergens1985 That is called a string damper.

  • @shecky308 What is a string damper for?

  • @tsuyautadragon

    Fights feedback!

  • @tsuyautadragon

with the damper the open strings sound less bright so they sound more like the other notes

  • @marcelcelmar ..i love that damper sound. i hope i find someone too

  • @kjuergens1985 capodaster

  • I do not like that tone.

  • Herb Ellis played songs written by great composers whose songs were featured in Movies and Musicals as well as orchestral performances. To compare him to metal is ridiculous metal composers are in the bands. Metal does have it's virtuosos but the compositions are modal with few modulations or key center changes. Metal has frenetic and constantly changing ryhthmic patterns swing jazz is much more steady. No way similar not to mention culture clash.

  • class

  • bassist name? freaking genius

  • All great musicians. The bass player is fu**in brilliant, the way he plays round the melody.

  • this video made me smile

  • BloodKnox, i like jazz but i think you might just be listing to bad metal.

  • hahah another stuck up berklee kid.

grow up and stop being pretentious.

  • I didn't write this comment. Someone else did. I can tell because I would not have written really bad instead of very badly. Anyway, screw you for calling me pretentious just because I have an education.

  • I think the backup band have hard time following the rhythm

  • Keep listening to this genius. Herb Ellis is my favourite jazz guitarist; I hope he'll be a big influence for you!

  • For a kid who calls himself BloodKnox you have incredible taste lol

  • cool and the kids

  • I always liked jazz too, even when all my mates were listening to Nirvana. Guess they must have thought I was nuts!

Anyway, it's good to be different.

Some metal is worth listening too though. In some ways jazz was the metal of the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s. Both styles are very virtuoso and technical to play.

  • good for you man. most of what is popular now is very watered down anyway. with jazz you can only get the truth.

  • @BloodKnox Hey, fuck you.

  • @BloodKnox kid, i'm almost 30 and it took me years through the metal and emo crap to learn to appreciate real music. So kudos for your comment and good luck with your guitar studies!

  • @BloodKnox Keep an open mind my friend! I love Herb but don't let the fans of a style of music influence your perception of the music itself. I won't try to defend screamo but there is a lot of beautiful and musical metal out there. That said, good for you for finding the good stuff early :)

  • yeah herb

  • Herb always seemed to me to be kind of underrated. I know this may provoke angry reactions, but I always thought that the real star of The Great Guitars was Herb. At least in that context, Barney's playing was often very sloppy, and Byrd's playing seemed to me somewhat stiff. Herb was always playing cleanly and swinging hard at the same time.

  • I agree that Herb is underrated--just try playing along with some Oscar Peterson and see how easy that is. But Kessel, he just knows so much more harmony than anyone else, by far. Everyone has their niche. They play how they feel, they play how they want to. Another comment says Herb is 86 here--playing jazz is good for your health!

  • Herb is quite clean but I don't know how clean his playing is in this particular piece. And at the risk of copping a shit storm of criticism im going to say that It seems as if the intro could have done with a bit of Kessel to be honest. Watch Kessel's rendition of Basie's Blues and you will see why he's so revered and at the end of the day I would personally rate Kessel over Ellis but thats just me i guess.

  • @NickinDK he was outstanding with oscar peterson. yet still i think grant green fits your statement equally well. i believe there is only one clip of him on y-tube. anyway...

  • Herb is till kicking ass! Damn, he sounds great.

  • Grate video.Thanks

  • vai herb!

  • He's 86 and still playing, thats good!
