Beautiful version--they did it even better live than they did on the recording. Paul sounds nervous, though; he's stuttering through the introduction. :( I <3 Paul!!
It should be clear to anyone watching this clip that George Harrison was the musical glue that held the band together. By his own admission, John Lennon was a lousy guitarist and often "played" live with his rhythm guitar either turned way down or unplugged completely. Paul was an average bass player. Ringo was an average drummer at best. Their talents all blended beautifully, though.
@scdevon Agreed, The Beatles was the sum of its parts. However, I think you misunderstand their playing abilities: they all played the parts they were required to for the music they composed. George was shamefully undervalued - as guitarist and writer - within and outside of the group. But to describe Paul or Ringo as average! By what measure? Within their band they were the only suitable people for those roles. Same with John, who was not a virtuoso guitarist but was a marvellous musician.
Yes, All of todays acts can't touch them. And at 20 years old George playing that lead totally unheard of. As a musician, to us they were playing chord progressions in ways nobody even thought of. We were still playing three chords in those days, and we thought we were cool....yea right!
You could put all the top acts in music today together in front of an audience and they couldn't do this. This song makes you see how those talented geniuses went from "Please Please Me" to "Yesterday."
This is indeed one of the greatest guitar solos in rock history, so much was on the line to get this piece over to a crowd of upper class jazz and opra lovers who came out to see for themselves this Rumor of prodigy from Liverpool. No improvision allowed on the solo, just perfection. Its very hard to remold a standard to The New Standard, this take did just that. George's performace must have made the Beatles so proud of him. The crowd applause at the end... for George, for George!
Great video! Thanks for posting. Also, the lyrics (though he makes them a little difficult to understand) are "In sweet fragrant meadows of dawn and *dew*." Not you. I honestly don't really care, I was just informing you for future reference.
Young Paul was never mentioned as a great natural voice IIRC the way other singers were. But man, did that kid have pipes. They were all so good. George was a spot on great guitar player. IMO they were like three groups in one, all so talented and all could play the frontman part.
this has just got to be my favourite video on youtube. they all play so well, and for once they have an audience more appreciative of their music than their looks! (mind you, they do look good here, and all the time of course! but you get my meaning.) and to play in front of the queen mum at the royal variety! truly unforgettable, legendary beatles.
Not to take away from Paul's amazing singing and George's lead guitar work, but John Lennon's rhythm guitar part is a bitch for this song. Some of the chords are just ridiculous, good job Beatles!
does anybody else notice he seems a little bit out of breath 0:10-0:20 then he starts signing and its like perfect breathing, i'd like to believe signing is more natural to him than talking,. its the only explanation for such wonderful sounds... -Laura age:14(:
haha this is fucking awsome. wat most people dont understand is this song, like all there songs, is fucking hard and really intricate, and yet they play and sing perfectly. george's solo is fuckin sick haha
Absolutely INCREDIBLE, stellar performance!!! They played it amazingly well, and Paul's vocal is SUPERB!!! It's not in the least worse than studio record! He sings live so well, so beautiful, flawless! BRAVO!! He kicks every butt with it! George also did great playing that sweet solo. Very VERY well!
i sing this in front off louis walsh and i think it melted heart, by craig craig glennon, can wait to sing with paul sean and ringo it will be the fab

the jazz chords George and john play make it difficult then you got the solo which is pretty intimitating.
