I hate planes, I love thunderstorms, it would freak me out, i had a similar experience where on my way home from florida the weather comditions made lightning go right through the plane, some bad turbulance there was July 2 2001 even before 9/111 flying wasn't my ting I scared
Headed home frm where, that happened to me on my way home from floria near georgia and teh carolinas no delays we thought that we were gonna crash. This loos harminus and a scene like from a piderman movi eor sumtin
That's what I'd like to see on those summer nights! Looks much better from the sky. I fly into Hawaii soon and there are supposed to be thunderstorms, so maybe I'll get to see one!
Love the Gay Steward.. sounds like the guy from Family Guy. Wonderful footage, too bad we can not hear all the noise that storm is making.. would be a great lulabye.
interesting....you would think that a storm making its way out to sea during july is a very common thing...they must be in a much different area than where i live in mass....that's pretty much the norm up here that time of year
Do you know what is interesting?....that poor light in cloud....I tried to imagine, that it is window, reflexing a light from the plane board...but ....lights, ferlexing in window are moving differently than that light ......
i just expericend this flying back to L.A. from Atlanta, most of the action was over oklahoma city, but a site to see when your @ 38,000 feet...tried to get the cam out, but couldn't get it in time, great vid!!!
Apparently they experienced an Electrical Failure, maybe they did try to send a Mayday and it failed. No one really knows what happened unfortunately.
If this was south of the Carolinas this storm was in the Bermuda Triangle. Perhaps it was not a storm but a transport portal for alien spacecraft. Remember Spielberg's 'War of the Worlds'? Maybe we should all collectively seek to welcome our new insect (or otherwise) overlords. I wanted to know what those War Of The Worlds aliens smelled like. Ever smelled gasoline drying on paper American money? (worked at a gas station) Probably they smelled like that.
if there's lighting that means there's thunder to doesnt it. IS there a difference betweena lighting storm & a thunder storm or are they both combined
This is pretty awesome. In July of 1992 I was flying to Phoenix from Chicago when we ran into lightning storms along the way. It was really cool to watch the lightning go in and out of the clouds. Then we landed during a thunderstorm where we saw lightning flashing while cutting through the cloud cover. It was an awesome trip - weather in Arizona during the summer is amazing indeed.
Absolutely spectacular. During the summer of 2006, I flew from DC to Las Vegas and got to experience a little lightning show over the midwest, which practically lit up the whole cell for the entire duration. We were at least 50 miles away from the cell and the turbulance was extremely strong. I suppose, there could have been a storm underneath us or in the opposite side of the plane.
I'm curious to know why you believe the storm was over land (honestly, I'm not experienced enough to see a difference between terrestrial and maritime formations). This storm cell was shot from the starboard side of the plane, heading north, a few miles east of the Atlantic Coast.
I saw the same thing when flying back to the UK frmo Gran Canaria in 2002, was quite spectacular! It was further in the distance though but it was great to see a storm from that angle!
I was landing in Kuala Lumpur, and during the entire 30 minutes descent, there was a lightning storm, too bad i didnt have my camera, every 3 seconds, you would see an actual bolt of lightning, it was amazin
Great video. For best viewing... Do yourself a favor after the video completly loads.Pause it and drag the video slider and you'll manually view each individual lightning bolt/cloud illumination. The viewpoint is from the right hand side of the airplane as the plane moves from right to left. You can clearly see the flightpath around the storm formation.
i have seen storms like this a few times from planes, mainly over the atlantic and over australia, been on a plane hit by lightning to lol........fun times
thank you very much for this. ive been after quality lightning footage for a while to use as my vista ultimate dreamscene. awesome, and yes i would have loved to have been on that plane with my Sony DCR-SR300 DVD Handycam
ive seen this too, on the way to australia-over the tasman sea, it was a massive storm that i watched for about 2hrs as we flew by, got 1 pic of it taken with an old 35mm SLR ,theres a pci of it on my myspace page if anyones interested (same username as this comment) it was indeed strangely serene to watch-at least from a safe distance!
aint it? i had lightning storms on the way to spain, quite similar actually, not as amazing but fantastic to watch, its also strange how we forget about everythin on the ground, i think pilots had the best job ever, abover the clouds is a different lovely world
Spectacular video and thanks for sharing, but if you were halfway home you must have been around the Carolinas. I don't think they are any strangers to T-storms in July. Must have been a new pilot.
I saw a scene exactly like this last night from my airplane window flying between Chicago and California! I couldn't believe how frequenly/continuous the lightning was.
KrystalFrizz: I agree, that flight attendant didn't have a clue. Thunderstorms are very common in July, especially over the Atlantic Gulf stream current.
Very nice, reminds me of flying from FLL to LGA recently on Spirit Airlines around 5am you could see the most beautiful lightning display all around us. We were flying slighlty above those clouds until our idiot pilot decided to fly straight through one of them.

WelchDrew 2 years ago
If you avoid the storm, there's no problem. The thing is when you get into the storm (AF447)
cybermariano 2 years ago
Most Planes that get into Storms pull through it, I do believe AF447 had another serious issue
soeffingwhat 2 years ago
First, I don't understand why they didn't avoid the storms (not only one, there were several). And second, why didn't they send a mayday distress

Apparently they experienced an Electrical Failure, maybe they did try to send a Mayday and it failed. No one really knows what happened unfortunately.

oh ... i misread your caption ... (for some reason when i glanced I thought halfway between NYC and LA) ... nvm
However, in response to the previous comments, lightning over the atlantic during the summer months is very common ... the ocean temp reaches mid 70s
