Better than Best........Love Claptons guitar playing, it's almost like the guitar is attached to his body........so much feeling...I get goosebumps!!!!!!!!!
Not only is Clapton kicking it big time here but all the musician's are just brilliant. I was so happy to hear Billy Preston in part two. And Doyle Bramlet plays old school right on the money blues in his turn. Sometimes I get a bit impatient with Eric's playing...when I do that I am forgetting that he can't do this for every guest appearance and TV shoot. This is EC in his element. Relaxed and playing the blues.
For anybody who wonders where this version of have you ever loved a woman can be found, it is on the crossroads 2004 guitar festival DVD at the end of disk two.
You sit behind your computer and criticize one of the greatest bluesmen of all time. You can't feel the blues coming from Clapton's playing, so you have NO SOUL!
@Stratolespaul80 well clapton's solo's are better in the one at hyde park he also uses the signature blues guitar there that everybody used back in the days(even Buddy) but Billy is on fire ! i watch part 2 just for him :D
Clapton is one of those guys whose career is evidence that you don't have to be constantly innovative to be a great musician. Yes, he's done some boring stuff but ever since he reconnected with his own guitar playing (some time in the 90s, I think it was), he can play his ass off. Like here.
Ah, little Katie, m'dear...this one makes me think of you...remember that show at the University of Colorado we tried to play this in our encore? If I'd given up drinking a year earlier, I might have hit half enough notes on the leads...ah well...joie des morts, eh? To live and die on stage...
Maybe everyone who rates Hendrix as a 'better' guitar player is just wanting to relive the heady days of the psychedelic era. Hendrix was creative as possible, but I can listen to Clapton all night. Technically, Clapton soars. And from a practical perspective, is still finding new ways to express himself.
Indeed I do see your point - it's the same as I was trying to make. When Clapton no longer evolves, any comparison will be made to the existing body of work - as is now done to Hendrix.
@soin2top exactly, i totally agree, although it's not the point i was trying to make. I meant that unlike clapton who continued playing after 1970, hendrix's career ended that respective year, which makes clapton's active years in the business > than hendrix's, so basically giving him time to flourish and develop new incredible work. Back in the 60's Clapton was really impressed with hendrix's guitar playing, seeing him as an incredible guitarsit but also as a threat to himself.
@DrCharlie1 wel Cream had the same sound as jimmy i think but if you see clapton cover one of his early songs with cream or blind faith he always pulls it to a higher level and that's not strange cause he wrote a lot of it
i actually really love this version...the overdrive is fat and crunchy..i think due to the mid boost in his strars plus i know he was using new amp at that time a Cornell Custom 80 watt amp that was made to be dark and mid-rangey...i loved it
Tone is a matter of prefrence. I love how he sounded at this concert. Pure, gritty, clear overdrive. Just so crunchy that you can almost taste it. lol
Clapton WAS on fire this concert. I'm lucky to have been there =). As far as the comment about his tone, i think it may partly be the quality of the video.
Eric is one of my 2 heros, and he gets better and better as he gets older. I have to say that I don't like the tone here though at the crossroads gig. He's not using his usual August/Journeyman sound and its a very rattley and mushy sound, you'll see what I mean by the boom mushy rumble when he goes onto the low strings, the playing is absolute top though.
i know what you mean. I dont exactly know what people mean by like mushy and clumped together. can you explain please? But i do like the es- 335 with this song fo sho. lol thanks
@dodidodafna Absolutely!! Clapton's got more soul and makes the guitar just weep as he's b e n d i n g those strings, and looks pretty damn hot doin it too!! :-)
Ol' slowhand still kicks ass! I saw him live the first time at Filmore West in SF and have been wowed by his guitar and more recently voice....the very best there is.
This is one of his best. The best solos of him where on this concert (this and i shot the sheriff for example) and 24 nights (much 24 nights things that were not on the dvd).
Got a question for anyone who acyually has a clapton signature strat. Can you get, or come close to this sound with your guitar? I'm thinking about gettin me one. lol
i got the sound. i have a very good mexico strat with lace sensor gold. I have a dB booster in my guitar.. Not the MID BOOST!. and a 57' Twin amp. I have claptons Sound
Lace sensors were his former pick- ups. Now he got Vinatage noiseless pick ups. I got a Fender mex too. I think i'm gonna buy Lace sensors too. And offcourse the Twin amp is typical (for the) EC (sound.)
you'll need a '57 twin amp and not the signature strat but the custom shop one if you wanna say you got clapton's tone.everything else just comes close.
Claptons sound was superb for this concert. He almost got Crash 3(Ibelieve) to sound like ol' Cherry Red. Not a stratocaster type sound at all. This paticular guitar is among my favorites of the ones he has used in the past.
Stunning post! I love EC & DBII together. Eric sings the blues so well that does not appear to be white and a english man! The guitar's solo is beautiful & give me chills! I love EC!!!
They are playing with C7 or C9. Personally i prefer C9 but you can playing with both (both sound great). The chords for a twelve bar blues are the (I IV V) = C9, F9, G9
there are no tabs for this, its pure improvisation . The chords are very easy, they are a twelve bar blues in the key of C, but they are not playing it with the typicall C5 with shuffle rythm.
Nice version....great lineup !!
