Emperor was gay but he was not. and one his soldiers got away with a woman because he was same way. never had any experience with women but they start learning what love is later on. Hong Lim was his favorite soldier for a long time and so Hong Lim never had a chance cause he was always with Emperor.

@imnotthankless I believe that was a director whimsy. Critics in South Korea even said that the look toward the king was a bit off because he loved the Queen romantically. However, the relationship between Hong Lim and the King is an extraordinary one. You could say it was "bro-mance" despite the fact that the King felt sexual feelings toward Hong Lim. I believe the look is to conclude the relationship between the two, not concerning "who's" love was for whom.
