  • My yarn is curling up...what am I doing wrong?

  • @Mahryah04 You are not doing anything wrong. Curling happens to everyone. You can try working a foundation of single crochet first which may help reduce the curl.

  • my last row looks crazy. just gonna keep watching you til i get it right. thanks for the help. i appreciate the new stitch. trying to make a scarf to practice this.

  • somehow i am missing a stitch at the end and its crooked. could u explain? i wud appreciate it it slants

  • @tippersmami When you are on the opposite side with all the loops on your hook, you pull through one loop to start of each row. It is possible that you have overlooked that part which would make your work decrease in size and become slanted.

  • where do I get the written instructions for this pattern......email me @ chilili@verizon.net

  • Very neat! It's like one-needle knitting.

  • Would you be kind enough to do a video that calls for a picot stitch. I'm new to this and selected a very easy pattern but it's asking for this stitch, thanks

  • thank you so much!!!! This seems like it's going to be my favorite stitch. Probably a dumb question but to do a baby blanket would I need a humungous crochet hook? lol

  • @vrnca77011 You would need a 12-18 inch crochet hook to work a larger blanket

  • I would like to make an afghan with this stitch. How many would I cast on?

  • @silentwriterofpa You will make a chain of 180-235.

  • @tjw1963 The sample has 14 chains, and to make an afghan, I need to chain180-235, so it is a mutliple of?

  • @BBknits This one will work with any amount of chain so crochet a chain between 180-235

  • @tjw1963 Thank you so much Teresa! I LOVE your videos, you are awesome, very precise on explaining how to do every stich!!! The best teacher on the net!

  • @tjw1963 Thank you very much Teresa!!!

  • @3rosesred It curls for everyone. You can work a row of single crochet first which will reduce the curl some.

  • i dont understand how to start this,,

  • @sabamoazzamarif I have another video that I have sent to you.

  • @tjw1963 thanks for helping me,, receiving the answers of my comment from you make me feel that u realy cares for your veiwers.. thanks

  • @sabamoazzamarif You are welcome! I do care and want everyone to be successful!

  • Beautifully clear video. Now I feel confident that I will be able to do this. Thank you! :)

  • @SunflowerGallery You are welcome.

  • Teresa - thank GOD for you video on Tunisian Crochet - I have been trying to learn for many years, and just could not understand the 'written' instruction - for me - as well as many others - "seeing" is much better!

  • @janetmarston Than you, I appreciate the comment! :)

  • Mine gets smaller sa I start working is this because I am doing it to tight or to loose? it seems like every row gets shorter? Am I missing loops? IDK!!! HEEELLLPP!!!

  • @cjknox00 I suggest that you keep your stitches and loops as loose as you can or it will get tighter. If your stitch count is correct, you may be pulling your yarn to tight as you are making each stitch.

  • this is kind of like knitting...actually

  • @foreverdesiree it's a variation on how to crochet but it is not as commonly used. some books that i have looked at do not even show how to do this stitch. This stitch of good for making dish cloths i found out.

  • Hi there,

I never leave comments (I know, lame right?) but I just wanted to let you know a little something I've just experienced. I've been crocheting for a while (mostly just double stitch with easy variations), and I just stumbled across your video after failing miserably at knitting. Something about the 2 needles just totally confuses me! Anyway, I've wanted to try the tunisian stitch for a while, so thank you for posting this EASY video! What a HUGE help! I'm gonna be up all night... :]

  • tunisian or afghan crochet rug is much better than knitted rug its strong and warmer..i've done bed covers in tunisian crochet its warm and thick ...btw, i used pure wool yarns

  • @sosweetlittlegirl99 I'm sorry but I do not know how to knit.

  • what if you want to do a single crochet after the afghan?

  • Hi Teresa...I would like to attempt this afghan stitch to make an afghan. My question is do I buy really long crochet hooks or what. Won't they fall off if you use just a standard hook?

  • @cs9295 You would need to purchase the longest hook you can find. The will be solid with an end. Some have a flexible cord between to hooks. They will work too. The standard size hook will not be long enough for blankets.

  • are there any variations on this stitch?

  • @50oldschool44 I can send you the playlist for what I have posted. It does have some variations.

  • hi. I really this stitch, but can you please tell me what I can I do to make it in round. Thank you a lot

  • I love this stitch, but how do you end it off.when you have the size you want? Thanks

  • You can work a row of single crochet. When that is complete, cut they yarn, pull it through, then sew in the tail.

  • Thanks for sharing. The books and written instructions didn't make much sense but it really helps to see this in action.

  • You are welcome. :)

  • You are a great teacher. Thank you so much. Janet from Tennessee

  • I appreciate the comment, thank you.

  • hi i saw ur video it is really very helpful can i make shawl using tunisian stitchor u suggest me some design thru video as i am beginner thanx wish u gud luck

  • I have a couple of ideas that you may like. Have you seen the abstract cats? That is fun and works up pretty fast. I just posted the Puff stitch square which has two colors. I will send you a couple of video links.

  • ok thanks. i tried abstract cats a couple hrs ago i sent u a hopefully nice commet about it. i am making it as we speak. its very pretty

    thanks teresa!

  • HI Teresa,

    I have one quick question,

Im going to make a blanket. but every time i do it it corls up :(

How can i make it lay flat?????? Plz reply if u dont mind it would really mean a lot. But ur other vids r out of this world thanks for posting!! But if u wouldnt mind helping me with me problem that would be great!! I wish you love and health

    thanks :)

  • Unfortunately the curling is part of the stitch technique and happens to everyone.

  • Oh ok,

So is their any other vids u reccomend for me to try?

btw on ur linked crochet stitch- tunisian is their anyway for the bac to stay on oneside and the front to stay on the other>

    Thanks

  • I have over 400 crochet videos posted. What are you interested in?

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks so much, i have been fighting with this stitch forever and you made it so clear to follow. Thanks again for such a great Video.

  • can you please do a hooded afghan ...ive been looking for videos and nobody has it

  • Can someone post a video on how to switch colors when crocheting the afghan stitch?

    Thanks!!!

  • I do have a video posted.

  • hello from comalcalco, Tabasco, Mexico thanks a lot for this tutorials. I learned to do the flowers and i'll exploring your videos for to learn other things

  • Thank you! Your videos are so clear and easy to follow!

  • You are welcome. I appreciate the comment. :)

  • great video ! question ? do you have a youtube video or a web page on how to increase and decrease tunisian crochet when you do a cardigan sweater ?

  • do you have any videos how to decrease using this technique? im making an i pod cover for my brother and i want to keep decreasing until im at the end and make a loop for a button.

i love your videos :] i watch at least one a day and im getting better and better as those days go by :]

  • I do not have a video but I can try to explain it. When you are picking up loops and adding them on your hook, instead of inserting your hook under 1 bar, you will insert your hook under 2 bars to decrease.

  • thanks! sounds easy enough :]]

  • I have a question~

I was wondering, what if you didn't have the money to buy an afghan hook especially for this stitch, for say, big projects; do you think it'd be possible to like, tape a crochet hook to a knitting needle and use that as a long hook?

sorry, I was just thinking. It might be dumb. But I love to crochet and I know a little knitting. I don't get out much, so I was just wondering what you thought. Sorry, I know it's dumb...

  • It may not be very practical. The yarn will stick to the tape and the weight of the whole project will pull the needle from the taped connection. The afghan hooks are only a couple of dollars. With it being summer, you may be able to find hooks at yard sales, second hand stores or Goodwill.

  • Hi,

I LOVE your videos. You are so nice, explain things so very well, and your video is really up close and clear. Also, I noticed your pink nail polish, very good idea! Looked so nice in the video. I'm trying to learn to make pretty baby booties to take with me on a missionary trip to Rwanda in February 2010. I may email you about it. Just wanted to say how I LOVE, LOVE your videos! Blessings, Heidi

  • Heidi, Thank you very much for the comment. I appreciate it.

    ~~Teresa

  • hi, do you cross stitch????

  • I would suggest doing a Google search for information on Cross Stitch. There are sites that provide detailed instructions on how to cross stitch. You can also try ABOUT since they have good information.

  • This is a very good tutorial! This reminds me of the "pearl" part of knitting

  • The back side of this technique is just as pretty as the front side.

  • do you have an accent?

  • What kind of accent would you think I have? I imagine I will have some sort of accent if you are used to people in a different part of the country or world.

  • Thank you for the demo...it helped alot. I was wondering...do you have a finished Afghan you can show us?

  • me and my mom are new to the whole crochet thing and so we watched your videos and were amazed at how you made it so simple. thank you so much!!

    =]

  • Thank you. :)

  • Hooray, at last I can do it! Thank you so much for such a clear demo.

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Hi umm do you think that i can add different stitches in between that ?

sort of like a row of popcorn stitches to make a different kind of pattern?

  • Yes you can. I would suggest to give it a try and see if it is something you will like.

  • tysm

my friend taught me this before but it wasnt right so it always came out wrong so i just stayed away from the stitch now i know the right way

    thank you :)

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Your video's are fantastic, slow enough to follow and easy to understand. Thank you for doing these!

  • Thank you. :)

  • I just love your videos. They are easy to follow. I'm doing this stitch for the first time, but it's curling on me. What am I doing that I can correct. I'm using a J hook for this.

  • Thank you. You are not doing anything wrong. It curls for everyone.

  • Thank you so much for these videos! I am trying this stitch first and have done a sample just like yours. Even though I do it left-handed, it's so easy to follow along! This will be much faster than my treble crocheting I have been doing on my straight row afghans!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Hi Teresa - Love this stitch, love your demos, love you! Mine curls up round the front side. When I stretch it out it looks fine, but I must be making one pass too tight? Forward or back? Or what? I'm using a 5.5 double hook 10" long crochet hook and #4 medium yarn. ~~Thanks.

  • Thank you. It is not anything you are doing. It is something that happens to everyone. You can put a simple edging around when you are finished and it will look nice.

  • Thanks. I'll soldier on. :)

  • Tjw1963 - I enjoy your helpful videos. Please post part 3 of how to complete the final row. I have tried it several times (using multiple explanations from multiple sites) but it just doesn't look right. It seems like it is missing something as it looks unfinished. Thank you.

  • You can do a row of single crochet across the top. That might give it the finished look you are looking for.

  • Yep, that did it. Now it looks great! Thanks.

  • Hi,

It's me again... love this stitch, but that is happened is it is straight on the left edge, but the right edge turns out to be skewed. What am I doing wrong? I'm trying to make a baby blanket and I've unstitched it four times.

  • It sounds like you may be dropping a stitch somewhere along your row. It is always important to count. As long as your have the same number of stitches in your row, you edges should be pretty even.

  • Thanks so much for such a great demonstration. I always wanted to learn this stitch and now I am going to have fun with it!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Thank you for this wonderful and easy to follow video!

I do have a question. I am trying a simple pattern now that I have practiced the afghan stitch. I have to count rows for the pattern and I am unsure how to do that. Not counting the beginning chain, does each pass count as a row (Left 'cast on' = row 1, right 'cast off' = row 2), or do I count it as one row only after going left then right?

    Thank you :)

  • I count both passes as one row.

  • Thank you, thats what (IMO) made the most sense, but I wanted to check before I went to far with the pattern. :)

  • You are welcome. :)

  • love your video, but how do you finish it? and can you make a twin size bed spread with it? if so how many chain stitches would you start with?

  • When you finish your second pass, just pull the yarn through, cut the yarn, secure it with a knot, then hide the thread to finish it off.

For the twin bed, you would make the chain the width of the twin size bed. I would suggest doing a google search for the size or measuring the twin size bed to see what size you want to make your starting chain.

  • You make it easy enough to understand, I love it! I never thought I would be able to do the Tunisian stitch, but I am because of your video's. Thank you so much!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Thank you Theresa!!!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Hi theresa, it's me patty, i wrote to you last time about my husband surprising me with a crochet set. I am doing the tunisian afghan and I am having trouble with the bottom curling up. I cant get it to lay flat...what should I do???

    Thanks, Patty

  • That is something that happens with this stitch. There is nothing you can do about it at this point. It happens to everyone. You can put on an edging later which may help a little bit. You can also press with a cloth and cool iron when it is complete.

  • Thank you so much for your videos, they are superb, especially for someone like myself who learns from watching better than reading!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Thank you so much for your help! Your videos were really easy to follow! I have been waiting a long time to learn how to do this and I finally can say that I know how to now, lol. Thanks again!

    ( )_( )

    (='.'=)

    (")_(").

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Can you video how to end the project? You explained below, but can you video?

Another question with the basket weave video: Can you video how you stitch AS you turn? My work is always either too long or too short at the ends and gets all messed.

    Thank you!!

  • What do you mean end it? Once you take the stitches off on your second pass, you just cut your yarn and pull the tail through the loop to secure it.

  • Thanks, I figured out how to end it myself.

On the basket weave, mine come out so that I'm one post short at the end of the row, what am I doing wrong?

  • Would I be able to use this stitch for a headband? I assume I would just sew the ends together.

  • If it is something you would like, you can use it. I am using tunisian to do a cuff for slippers.

  • GE! Can I make a full blanket or afghan using this stitch?

  • Yes you can. Your supplies would be a long afghan hook with the end on it.

  • how would you end this, so that it wouldnt unravel. thank in advanced-amy

  • Once you take all the yarn off of the hook, you pull the yarn through one more time, cut the yarn and continue to pull the yarn all the way through.

  • ok tyvm!!

  • OMG! thank you thank you thank you! This was wayyyy easier than I tought. I just learned the basics from a friend this past Wednesday. You are great. I getting ready to take back these confusing "How to learn how to crochet books"..... very confusing..

  • Thank you. :)

  • thank you so much!

  • hey tresea,

thanks so much for your videos, iw ant to make my mom an aphgan for her birthday in october. i have seen this patterns where people use two different colorst and one side is mostly one color the other side the other color. i thought that it looked really awesome. i would realy appreciate it if you or someone here could tel me, or recomend a site or video! thank you so much!

    alphawofle0128

  • Hi, I have heard of this technique. I will research the technique and see what I can find.

  • Do you know how to do Tunisian on the round? In other words, do you know to do Tunisian crochet to make round pieces or tube-like pieces?

  • I was experimenting with a round tunisian the other day. I have more experimenting to do on that one. Once I get it to my satisfaction, I will do a tutorial.

  • That would be great.

  • i have a few question first what type of edgeing would you suggest for a baby afgan. second could i do 50 stitch and make about four or five pieces and sew them together or is it better if you do the full 100-125 together do you get what i'm trying to say? thank you so much. you are wonderful. One more thing what size hook should i use for a baby afgan

  • A single crochet edging would be nice. I would recommend for color changes that you make or purchase yarn bobbins and change the color along the way so you have a seamless afghan. I use a size F crochet hook for some baby crochet. You need to consider the yarn size and stitch when determining the size of your hook.

  • how do i add a color. I deicied to just make the 125 as one but now i want to add a color to it could you show me or tell me how to do that thank you so much. I hope i get this done before my baby gets here it is due march 20 2009 i'm so exicted this is the first real project i have started

  • I have a new video posted for changing color.

  • hi there i have a few questions about crocheting but cant find anyone to ask. im hoping you or someone here can help me. i am trying to crochet a baby blanket for someone i babysit for and the only stitches i know are single double and triple. so i am making it 100 chains long and the "pattern" is 2 rows double and 1 row triple. is that ok? is there a better way? also once i get it to the desired size what do i do? meaning how do i finish it?

  • You can make your afghan out of any combination of stitches that you want to. Once you are finished, you cut the yarn and sew the tail in. I do have a few video's demonstrating how to do that.

  • Thanks so much for teaching me this stitch! I am disabled due to a spinal fusion and brain injurym and I am very anxious to make myself a nice, warm afghan for winter. Is it important to keep count of what you're doing? I may have trouble remembering if I'm going to attempt 200-300 stitches! Do you make as many stitches as you want the width of afghan? Sorry for so many questions! You're the Greatest!

  • You are welcome. The first few stitches and the last few stitches are where people usually decrease stitches by mistake. You don't have to count. Just make sure you are placing your beginning and ending stitches correctly. Your count should remain the same throughout the project with the same stitch placement.

  • I tried this technique but it curls, not on the sides but at the bottom and the more I stitched, the more it curls... I wonder if it's because the hook was to small for the yarn. I am, however, having difficulty in finding the proper sized hook... (long ones)

  • This stitch will curl no matter what size hook you use. You can add an edging once you are finished and it will make it lay nicer.

  • Thank you so much for your helpful hints. I will try it. Hugs

  • First of all, I love your videos! I have learned so much watching them. I'm kind of curious about what you might make using this stitch?

  • You could make an afghan, caps, clothing.

  • thanks and i have a question, do you think i could make a scarf with exactlly what you just did?

  • Yes you could. Tunisian does curl on the edges, which is normal.

  • thanks ill make one ^.^

  • WOW thanks for a great learning video!! And just like chev78406 I would really appreciate if you could show how to change colors. / Stina from Sweden

  • This is a great learning video. Thanks for putting it on. I have just learned how to do this. I am going to attempt a afghan with color change from a chart (to make a design in it) but how do you color change?

  • Any ou use a smaller needle? I dont have any big needles like the one in the demo. would a smaller needle make tighter stitches?

  • I only used the larger hook so it would be larger in the demonstration and make it easier to see. You can do this technique with any size hook that you want to. A smaller hook would make it tighter.

  • Is this anything like the waffle weave stitch? I bought a book showing the waffle weave stitch and can't figure it out. Do you know this stitch? what size hook would you use for a warm crocheted afghan and would you use double yarn? thanks!

  • I would recommend and H or I crochet hook with 4 ply yarn, one strand. If you wanted to use two strands you could use a size K,L,M,N,O,P etc with two strands. Those are the larger sizes. I think there is a crochet hook for the whole alphabet.

  • I am thinking the waffle stitch is called the basketweave but I am not positive. I have seen crochet stitches have various names for the same stitch. I will send you a private link to the basketweave stitch and then you can tell me if that is what you are looking for.

  • Thank you for this vid...I'm a little dyslexic with this one, but enjoy watching you do it.. Can you display some Afghans you've made. I loved looking at all of your hats. Do you sell any of your work???

  • I would be happy to show some of my afghans. I will have the granny afghan coming up soon as I have pieced it together. I have my hats for sale on Etsy with a link to that site on the hat video details and any of the most recent uploads. I am going to put some of the doilys for sale on Etsy soon.

  • A picture IS worth a thousand words. Thank you so much for taking the time to post your very helpful video.

  • You are welcome.

  • i have this stich down, but how does this make a blanket? it is so small.

  • Have you look at the covered coat hanger demonstration that I have up? I have a long crochet hook for that one. You can put 200-300 stitches on the hook with the long one. The afghan stitch will make a really nice blanket.

  • ok ill try that, is that the only demo for this kind of stich you have or is there more patterns?

  • This and the hanger cover are the only two demo's I have for this stitch.

  • Thank you for your help. i'll keep trying.

  • Thanks for posting this video. It was interesting and helpful.

  • what size is that hook? i would like to get that. can i get that online?

  • I believe it is a size P. You should be able to find it from Annies Attic or Herrschners.

  • I only learned how to do two crochet stitches - and books don't really help me learn. THANK YOU so much for taking the time to do this. Now I feel confident to try to crochet an afghan!

  • You are welcome.

  • I have taught myself how to crochet from a few books, and have only been able to get the basics and scarves. Somethings must be visually taught I suppose. Thank you for posting this tutorial

  • OOps, just getting back toy...there are purl and knit stitches in Tunisian. The knit afghan stitch is easy but the purl afghan stitch, as in knitting too, is harder to learn. The purl afghan stitch helps to eliminate the curling or so I've read . Right now, all I do is DK sport weight or fingering weight yarn in afghan stitch so that I

have more drape and less curl.

  • I hope you don't mind my asking but I would like to know how to crochet swuare pannles together or, sewing them either way. You give such great demo's. Thanks

  • I have that demonstration up already. This is what it is called-Granny Squares- Sewing Together I must apologize but YT won't let me post a link in the comment section.

  • This is the best ever video and I have watched several. Thanks!

  • Thank you. :)

  • THANK YOU. This was an excellent and clear lesson.

  • sislertx, I was 56 when I started to learn crochet. tjw1963, would you do a video on how to bind off and how to do purl and knit afghan stitches, pretty please? You have a way of breaking things down to a simple easy to understand method. The curl is a huge problem for me and I've read that a purl stitch can minimize it but I don't know how to do it the right way.

  • You are requesting knitting. I am not a knitter. This afghan stitch is the closest to knitting that I know.

  • THIS I will have to try before the flower. It looks more in my skill lever right now. I will have to look for afgan stich with the cross stiches you mentioned to see what that looks like! I am loving this crochet stuff. I wish i would of started before age 50. There are a lot of things I wish to make and so MANY pretty yarns! You are the best teacher!
