someone should do this on a really big scale, and very thoroughly, every brand of screen, every sort of computer, laptop, pda and let's see how much it would differate on a big scale.
Wow thanks a Lot, I was resaerching the same thing, Actually I wanted to make my website to have a black background, now im having second thoughts. It would be very nice to have a test for different kinds of monitors, LED LCD, CRT and Plasma
The difference is miniscule....unless you take into account your optometrist bill from the increased eye strain cause by reading a black screen with white letters.
Wow! A difference of 1W. The power supply in the computer is drawing a significant more amount of power. I guess you could argue that if you turn the sound down on your speakers you'll be using less power and therefore "save the planet". I probably already wasted more power than that just by downloading this video and then typing this response back. Hehehe.
A black screen obviously doesn't reduce the power consumption of an LCD screen. LCDs use a high-powered florescent lamp that is always on(unless it is an LED backlit display), so it will pretty much use the same amount of power for everything. Yeah maybe with CRTs or Plasmas it's a different story, but plasmas are also notorious power hogs and nobody uses CRTs anymore. I would say 90% of computer users use an LCD display.
I obviously exaggerated a little bit, but in reality CRT isn't widely used anymore. Not that it's out of fashion, it's simply just outdated technology.
TFT-TN LCD panels uses more energy to display a black screen than to display a white one! And CRTs are becoming less and less used in the whole world so this idea of using black backgrounds will become useless. It is already useless for LCDs.
My LCD spends 2 more watts on a fully black screen than when on a fully white screen...
no don't think blackle is a waste it works with crt monitors because crts have to illuminate a screen from a state of being off (black/dark), while lcds have to turn on all pixels to make something black(Make opaque).
If you want to save power - just buy an LCD and replace your CRT monitors if there any.. Anyway, if it is only Google - what is the point of using it if other applications use different backgrounds?
As I've tested LCD power consumption is not less with black background, it is the same as with the white background. On Plasma screen it really works. My 41" Plasma consume 2.5x..3.0x more power with the white background. I've tested it with the watts meter.
Only if you are using an LCD monitor. If you're using plasma or crt - it saves you an energy. But what is the point of using black&white on color monitors? ;-)
Power produced by power plants, mostly by nucleus power plants, so that energy is like from nothing (uranium).. You're just helping the electricity company to avoid overload ;-)
My statement is to buy an LCD and don't worry about background colors, it will save you an energy in either case!
I made a test to see in an absolute dark room, how much light the monitors release. The white google had a higher score in light release than the black from the monitor! And i thought wtf how black consumes more?? I made the same test as this guy here and my results is that it depends on your lcd monitor adjustments (contrast/brightness,) if you change them, alters the results. So white google wastes energy on monitors like my Samsung 226BW with 3000:1 dynamic contrast,(real white color)!!!
This is very helpful. :)
Thank you very much <3

Not in an additive color system.

My LCD TV seems to suck 143W with blackle and 148W with google. I'm also using a black theme for YouTube (looks much nicer to me).

'and nobody uses CRTs anymore'
Yes we do.
I won't toss an $1800 monitor -just- because it's out of fashion, or uses more power...
And the scanning raygun in a CRT scans the screen full time with multiple colors it doesn't use more or less power based om what is displayed.

Tossing a working CRT to save line power is a waste of the power it took to build, transport and dispose of the CRT.
It only makes sense in a power restricted environment like a remote researh station, boat and the like - not a typical office or home.

so blackle doesnt really save me energy....

Greenle ROCKS !!!
Blackle works with old screens only. If you have an LCD screen, you are wasting your money.
I like to remember how important the planet is - by searching with Greenle, every day.

no it doesnt even work with old screens.

Great !
I knew Blackle was a - kind of - fraud, for LCD screens users.
I'd like to see the same test on a CRT screen.
I will use Greenle instead of Blackle, starting today !
