The lower retail sales is great! Shipping jobs and money out of the nation is not a workable business plan for our nation. Until the nation realizes this the nation will continue down the same path. Free Market Capitalism= the freedom of the corporate and government elite to rob, rape, destroy and enslave everyone in the plantant. I love the freedom to work for less than anyone in the plantant. Thank you for providing the alternate numbers. The government numbers are a bunch of BS! Government propaganda to influence the masses into thinking everything is still ok.
Very well said, I have been trying to spread the word about the fradulent numbers put out by the media. The retail sector is going to get B*%tch slapped after the turn of the year and once they try to deplete the remaining inventory for the after holiday shopping. I would guess to say sometime in Feb or March, the true numbers will begin to come out!
Good point about the small increase in sales despite 30% less competition. Also, just because the $ amount of sales may have increased for that day, that doesn't mean that the stores made any profit.
What's really going to suck for retailers is when they can't get rid of all the stuff AFTER Christmas! I'll bet anyone that Democrats in D.C. already have their passports in order so they can leave the U.S. when the shootings begin.
Good reporting. After Christmas this year I think this thing is going to nosedive. I hope I am wrong but there is nothing on the table at all to pull us out of this. The only way out now in my opinion is a complete collapse and restructure. Any effort now is just an extension of the inevitable. We have no industry here. You cannot have a mortgage, provide retirement funds feed/cloth/educate any kids and provide a quality life on a retail or service job salery (period).
I went to Borders yesterday to do most of my shopping there (I had to cut back what I spent this year) and they had books & toys & cds/dvds flowing off their shelves, on the floors - way overstock. I don't know... nobody seems to be buying... can't be good for what happens in 2010 :(
I'm not doing any shopping this year. Most people I know are buying something for their kids or grandkids (minimal) and doing no shopping for other adults. This will be a year for record books. Thanks Obama, Pelosi and Reid. Merry Christmas assholes!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The economy will never be like the past as you well know Charlie. People are getting wise and realizing that they are more than "consumers" or "taxpayers". The "herd" are finally waking up. That with the fact of "job security" is also a thing of the past. I think this is the only way "We The People" can revolt against the tyrrany taking place in our country. More "Tea Party's" to come!!! Christmas is a beautiful time of the year, it was never meant to be an economic indicator...blessings to you
well where i live ppl are willing to go into debt for xmas. I mean where i work we have been reduced to 35 hours and I was asked last night what i all bought for xmas and I replied "well not much due to our hours cut" and well they went on talking about all the things they bought and I am figuring they are charging because I kn0w they don't make that much..... CraZy.....
Excellent vid Charlie. I work for a shipper here in the US.. Inventories at stores never went over 40% for the last year. Thanksgiving might have cleaned them out and they are restocking now. Sony ordered a lot of trailers 1st wk Dec to restock for Christmas. We think were going to see one more restock for everyone in Jan and thats it. Im expecting things to bottom out after end of Jan if not sooner. No holidays after that till summer. This is when I expect the real numbers to be released.
On my lunchtime walk today in one of the wealthiest parts of UK i noticed an off license (liquor store) has closed down. They sold the good stuff. Lots of rare whisky's etc.
I usually buy an expensive whisky for Xmas there. So it's a clear sign to me people aren't spending.
The Chancellor did his usual smoke and mirrors crap today in Parliament about things not being that bad.
Charlie, that's exactly what happened on Black Friday. My husband is in retail and worked Black Friday. He said people came in -- bought the advertised specials, (often in muliples) and walked out. And Charlie, it surprises me that you ONLY have 2,000 subs!

Thanks Charlie for a bit of reality.I work for a boss who owns a chain of pharmacies here in the UK9yes people do not directly pay for their medicines)well his counter sales are way down and these pharmacies are located in the most affluent parts of the UK-ouch!A frind who runs a botox clinic(you gotta laugh) says business is up only on using a cheaper generic-most new work is older guys struggling to look young in this climate! What have we descended to?
Charlie, all the numbers are down. Jobs, houses, jobs, automobiles, jobs. Did I say jobs? The banksters have really screwed the American people this time. They could not be satisfied with millions or even billions, no these bastards required trillions of dollars this time. Does human nature not have an upper limit on greed? So much for rational people and rational markets.
I watch this channel all the time and do not comment although I comment elsewhere quite often. Why? Because I have nothing to add. Charlie researches, analyzes and articulates better than I could ever hope to.
Thank you, Charlie. Keep the faith and keep up the fantastic work.
I do want to ask everyone to spend what cash they have on staples and useful goods this Christmas and give gifts of a personal nature that they make themselves. These gifts are the most precious and cherished.
I heard today that consumer credit is still contracting. Woe is us....like this is bad news? The world famous american consumer needs to continue on its current trajectory...down. What needs to rise again is the american producer...we need to stop buying and start producing again. Come on America, wake up!
So how will we do this, when the environmental retards will put a stop to factories, due to "emissions?" How will business survive, when the card check law is passed, and businesses have to pay higher wages than they can afford, to compete? What we need is for the damned criminal gov't and the leftists to be stuffed back in their box. And if there is an American producer of a product that is a good buy, consumers should go with that product. We have our hands tied behind our backs.
Was shopping tonight and it looked pretty dismal to me. Small crowds, very low inventory and some huge dept. stores closed. Prices are higher than two months ago, too.
Congrats on the new subs. You deserve it! cv1122 referred you through one of her vids and I'm very grateful for that.
I'll admit. I became a consumer last month. I used to own a crappy tv that finally broke. For curiousity, I looked around for deals.
I got an Xbox 360 for $100 at walmart, and I got a Sony Bravia with surround sound and Blu Ray disc for $1600 in a 40% discount with 3 years no interest to pay it off.
I only say this because the prices got so low (around 40-50% off) just to get me to buy, and I"m a stingy SOB. Hearing these numbers you mention.... I believe it.
Do you want to know why I think that this Christmas will be retail hell? My mother just told me that she stuck to the $30.00 Budget per gift this year. I've tried to get her to cut back for years. This is absolutely amazing that she stuck to the budget. Great video, excellent points.
When I heard Simon Peter Group bought more commercial property cheap today and their stock shot up as the market went lower today, I was floored After Christmas you are going to see thousands of store closings...who's is going to fill these newly acquired properties? No One... they'll get a commercial real estate bailout package from the government... so they are stocking up so they will get more of the kitty when it comes time.
I currently work at Macy's, and was wondering what the future holds for this company. Early morning Black Friday was slow, and no major rush. Do any of you think Macy's is a candidate for bankruptcy?
Sidenote- Chicago would have preferred the Marshall Fields name to have stayed the same. I think the store lost business by dissing this landmark. IMO there will be consolidation- but I don't view Macies as better or worse then the other chains. There will be consolidation. Meanwhile advice to any workers anywhere is to have a good attitude. A bud took a lay off since he had snide comments. They did not say so- but in the end his sour outlook harmed his slot there.
I used to work for them years ago. Got out as I saw retrenching going on with Federated. Then 750 got laid off at once- buyers, advertising, photography, execs etc.
Ask yourself- do old-style department stores have a future? Do you know anyone who shops at them except on deep-discount days with coupons? Do they offer anything more than nice gift wrap and pretty shopping bags?
Me, I am baking cookies for gifts... the stores will nave to do without me this year.
Gawd have you seen grocery prices this past week?
A local gas station was "out of gas" yesterday, when I asked why I was told it was due to people filling their tanks in anticipation of a coming snow storm. We have two Gas Stations in the area that have gone out of business in the past few months... Not good
Im just curious how long this "dollar ralley" is going to last...I think it will go through the end of the month..they are gonna keep up this game through Christmas, then afterward it goes back down lower....
I spent this afternoon Xmas shopping, I was amazed, but not surprised to see the empty parking lots. No hussle, no bussle... it was actually pleasant! But one thing became very noticeable to me. There are so many freakin' places to shop! And they are all popping with 1000's of dollars in merchandising and advertising. This is a glutton society! Consume, consume and consume! And then that bastard Obama makes a speech and says the way out of this... IS TO SPEND, SPEND, SPEND!
Americans are traditionally fiscal conservatives. O is an economic idiot. I haven't done too much shopping yet, but you are right, there is hardly anyone out shopping. The stores are filled with goodies and people using cash a lot more. I don't think that anyone will be listening to government much anymore, look how they were not able to get everyone to take the mandatory H1N1 vaccine. LOL, now they won't be able to get us to shop.
I agree, but it's simple, common sense: People can't shop if they don't have jobs or money and their credit cards have been maxed out already on groceries. Obama is complete MORON blinded by his ego. He *thinks* he knows what he's doing, therefore, he does. What DOES he think out-of-work people (20% of the working class right now) shop WITH?!?
Oshit is an economic moron, so are most bureaucrats and every day Americans. I personally think along with a few bloggers that once wall street sees the figures for christmas in march 2010, we will have another steep decline in the stock market like sept 08. The O admin heavily heavily stated that the recession is over, so another stock market crash will have every day americans waking up to the fact that govt has zero credibility.
:) This christmas, I asked for clothes (something that I normally buy for myself) My sister and her husband asked for clothes. Mom and Dad want something that practical that they can use. We are coordinating with each other to purchase items that we would normally purchase ourselves. Gerald Celente said that soon Americans will be buying each other food for Christmas. LOL, toys will be replaced with necessities. Good luck to the tax eaters this Xmas, figures out March 2010.
Charlie, I really appreciate your commentary...I look forward to your videos almost as much as my first cup of morning coffee! Please go the distance and don't let yourself get burned out like so many other folks have done - we need you, Bro! It is your channel that has just about knocked me off the fence and I think I might start posting videos, too!
Agreed -- seeing a new Crabby video in my subscription box is like seeing the latest issue of my favorite magazine (Countryside and Small Stock Journal) in the mailbox!
Hey Charlie, great point about there being less competition from businesses this year due to all the closures. As always, I appreciate you pointing out the flaws and sneaky tricks used to dress up the numbers. You're like a sanity and accuracy filter when applied to bullshit govt stats.
Congrats on 2000! I just broke 1000 today. I think I was your 40th or so.
buy and give silver for christmas at least it is not from china?? great video charlie keep up the good work and fight the good fight you can not believe any numbers the government gives you. ALL LIARS and thieves
Who knew that so many people wanted to watch you rant! Now if you could just get Google to pay you $1 per month per subscriber you would be doing pretty good! Keep it up Charlie.
i think we all know the truth....it is basically the opposite of what they say....... i appreciate your continued dedication........wooo hoooo on the 2000!!!!!
Imagine an isolated economy with 100 businesses, 1000 consumers and a fixed money supply. All the consumers are employed with the businesses to produce all the goods and services they then buy as consumers. But in order for the business to make a profit, they have to collect more from their customers than they pay their employees. Therefore, the collective purchasing power of consumers will never be enough to buy all the goods and services they produce as employees. Credit is the temporary fix.
Now, imagine that isolated economy which employs a central bank that loans money "at interest". There will never be money created to pay the interest, so they need to employ fractional reserve lending to maintain the "float".
Suppose consumers stop borrowing, or banks quit lending, and you have the gist of why we are, where we are.
Why not just establish the value of a given nation's currency upon its population's potential? On that premise, Amerikka is doomed, I know.
thanks for keeping it real Charlie, people need to know the truth so they can prepare themselves and their familes the lies and disinformaiton leave you unprepared and vuneralble to the wolves..
I bet sales aren't too bad in the dollar stores either. . . yet. I was in one yesterday to get some gift wrap boxes and it was rather crowded for a Tuesday afternoon I thought.
Keep up the good work. I am buying this holiday season, buying only silver that is. Gold and silver are going cheaper this season. Your going to need it next year.
People who stopped paying their mortgages and credit cards, have more disposable income to blow (temporary). Also, people who have made up their mind that they ARE GOING to default and therefore are just running up their cards and spending whatever they have left (only temporary).
If it wasnt for that money, which soon those people will all be filing for bankruptcy (watch those #'s skyrocket soon), sales would be down evern more
Charlie, you're one of the ones I wait for. Your'e one of the smartest guys out here; dedicated and thorough...
So forgive me if I'm wrong, but I believe the phrase is "death knell", as in the toll of a bell. It sounded like you said "death nail", as in a coffin nail.
BTW, wanna know why you don't believe the mainstream spin? You're on the wrong side of the looking glass! ;)
*****, ya' crabby (yeah I know it's your dog) old bastard!
You may be right! I may be crazy! (Hey!) But I just might be, The lunatic you're lookin' for... Turn out the lights, Don't try to save me. You may be wrong, For all I know but, You may be right! You're not in your coffin yet, are you? That'd be wierd. Listen for the bell, it's ringin' loud and clear. I'm not sayin' YOU are dying. Nor is Charlie. I'm sayin' that our culture is dying, at the hands of criminal banksters. We might be lucky to die.
lol.....well that was a mouthful.........you are correct...the bell is ringin'....and i know knell is correct....but i still think nail fits....:)......though i guess the economy is not quite dead yet.....merry christmas.......
Yes, we'll slog through this "recovery". But we all know it's a game now. Once you learn that the game is Monopoly, ruled by the Wizard of Oz, and mostly populated by the citizens of Wonderland, will you go back to the game board?
I secretly hope your name is Alice, Dorothy or Toto.
Charlie, the employees they have are getting their benefits cut, wages (such as Sunday pay and Holiday pay. They are cutting all this yet extending hours and remaining open on holidays like Thanksgiving and extended holiday hours. Yes, they are having great sales, but the customers only cherry pick and get the sale items. This is even true in the Grocery area of retail. Prices rise on the other items to where nobody buys those items.
Good point, even with less competitions the same store sales were still lower by 13 %. After adjusted, I wonder what will the real down would be? 20% to 24%? That is about the real unemployment rate according to Shadow Stat and about the drop in taxes revenue.
The facts is the facts. Pisses em off I bet. I feel bad for the people who will suffer due to the lousy economy. including myself. I hope they will put the blame where it belongs... D.C. , Harvard, Wall Street Banks... good starts... Thanks, I don't find you crabby at all!
Well what you need to do is cross ref the cost of the companies last year vs this year. They are only turning profit and a increase because they have a much lower opperating cost because they fired everyone. Compair apples to apples.Compair this years income vs last years cost of buiesness and you will quickly see they are further in the hole. The amount of unemployment masks the downturn numbers and actualy makes it appear they are bouncing back.
One thing that might help the retailers is all the Brazilians and Russians coming very soon!! NY, Aspen, LA, just a couple places that will get a little boost! I'll make a video on it when it happens!
Just keep telling the truth and I will continue to listen to you. Keep up the good work!

Like many consumers I did much of my Christmas shopping online this year...in fact about 80%.
And with more & more consumers shopping online you must factor in e-commerce in addition to the B&M retailers.
To me it looks like, when combining the 2, it's possible we could go 5% over last year.
And I'm sure most Americans are hoping we're on the road to recovery & will do about that well.

ChrisMcIntire4159 2 years ago
Sidenote- Chicago would have preferred the Marshall Fields name to have stayed the same. I think the store lost business by dissing this landmark. IMO there will be consolidation- but I don't view Macies as better or worse then the other chains. There will be consolidation. Meanwhile advice to any workers anywhere is to have a good attitude. A bud took a lay off since he had snide comments. They did not say so- but in the end his sour outlook harmed his slot there.
turboredcart 2 years ago
I used to work for them years ago. Got out as I saw retrenching going on with Federated. Then 750 got laid off at once- buyers, advertising, photography, execs etc.
Ask yourself- do old-style department stores have a future? Do you know anyone who shops at them except on deep-discount days with coupons? Do they offer anything more than nice gift wrap and pretty shopping bags?
vivaloriflamme 2 years ago
Dude, you speak volumes for what many of us feel!
Congratulations on your 2000th WTG man
Me, I am baking cookies for gifts... the stores will nave to do without me this year.

God I could VOMIT!!!
dwfierce 2 years ago 5
Americans are traditionally fiscal conservatives. O is an economic idiot. I haven't done too much shopping yet, but you are right, there is hardly anyone out shopping. The stores are filled with goodies and people using cash a lot more. I don't think that anyone will be listening to government much anymore, look how they were not able to get everyone to take the mandatory H1N1 vaccine. LOL, now they won't be able to get us to shop.
rayme4raw 2 years ago 2
I agree, but it's simple, common sense: People can't shop if they don't have jobs or money and their credit cards have been maxed out already on groceries. Obama is complete MORON blinded by his ego. He *thinks* he knows what he's doing, therefore, he does. What DOES he think out-of-work people (20% of the working class right now) shop WITH?!?
I'll say it again: MORON in the whitehouse.

Hey Charlie, great point about there being less competition from businesses this year due to all the closures. As always, I appreciate you pointing out the flaws and sneaky tricks used to dress up the numbers. You're like a sanity and accuracy filter when applied to bullshit govt stats.

Ask anyone if they know which country their supporting when they buy/ shop.
They're sick of it Charlie. Plain sick of it. Especially when they know people HERE are out of work. that's the story behind those numbers.

Piscivorus 2 years ago 2
Now, imagine that isolated economy which employs a central bank that loans money "at interest". There will never be money created to pay the interest, so they need to employ fractional reserve lending to maintain the "float".
Suppose consumers stop borrowing, or banks quit lending, and you have the gist of why we are, where we are.
Why not just establish the value of a given nation's currency upon its population's potential? On that premise, Amerikka is doomed, I know.

Charlie accidentally linked last years' New York Times retail sales article.
To view the data for 2009, click on his 2008 link and type "retail sales" in the NYT search box.
The article is titled, "U.S. Retail Chains Report a Lackluster November " - - - published Dec. 3, 2009
Great video Charlie : )
TracyM1974 2 years ago 3
Looks like the article has two names, "November Retail Sales Weaker Than Analysts Expected" is the one that comes up in the NYT search.

I bet sales aren't too bad in the dollar stores either. . . yet. I was in one yesterday to get some gift wrap boxes and it was rather crowded for a Tuesday afternoon I thought.

And they say that this is recovery......ya.....Sales are pathetic all over the place. The markets are gonna show soon their real face too.

People who stopped paying their mortgages and credit cards, have more disposable income to blow (temporary). Also, people who have made up their mind that they ARE GOING to default and therefore are just running up their cards and spending whatever they have left (only temporary).
If it wasnt for that money, which soon those people will all be filing for bankruptcy (watch those #'s skyrocket soon), sales would be down evern more
Its the stimulus no one wants to discuss.

Yes, we'll slog through this "recovery". But we all know it's a game now. Once you learn that the game is Monopoly, ruled by the Wizard of Oz, and mostly populated by the citizens of Wonderland, will you go back to the game board?

Charlie, the employees they have are getting their benefits cut, wages (such as Sunday pay and Holiday pay. They are cutting all this yet extending hours and remaining open on holidays like Thanksgiving and extended holiday hours. Yes, they are having great sales, but the customers only cherry pick and get the sale items. This is even true in the Grocery area of retail. Prices rise on the other items to where nobody buys those items.
grover442 2 years ago 3
Thanks Charlie

Stargirl70 2 years ago 4
Good point, even with less competitions the same store sales were still lower by 13 %. After adjusted, I wonder what will the real down would be? 20% to 24%? That is about the real unemployment rate according to Shadow Stat and about the drop in taxes revenue.
Kelvin701Lakeland 2 years ago 2
The facts is the facts. Pisses em off I bet. I feel bad for the people who will suffer due to the lousy economy. including myself. I hope they will put the blame where it belongs... D.C. , Harvard, Wall Street Banks... good starts... Thanks, I don't find you crabby at all!
PressForFreedom 2 years ago 4
Well what you need to do is cross ref the cost of the companies last year vs this year. They are only turning profit and a increase because they have a much lower opperating cost because they fired everyone. Compair apples to apples.Compair this years income vs last years cost of buiesness and you will quickly see they are further in the hole. The amount of unemployment masks the downturn numbers and actualy makes it appear they are bouncing back.
