This note jumping approach, (derived from classical music) is great as a SOLO presentation (as long as it is short, e.g., like EVH uses Eruption before he moves on to actual MUSIC) but, these patterns are not appropriate as a LEAD GUITAR in the context of a band-- if they were, the great band guitarists would have used them (Hendrix, SRV, Page, EVH) -- they are just TOO MUCH for the ear in the context of a band--thats why most classical guitarist play alone. The blues scale FLATTED 3 5 7.rules
man, i just don't get it!...if scientists wanted to know the origins of the universe they should've just come to shawn lane and ask him. For example here he's demonstrating how the stars were formed...now we rely on theories...
What is everyone so retarded for? No, this is not necessarily music, because it's just scales. He's showing you how to turn these scales INTO music, as in, learn these scales and put them into your playing and your own music. Also, to say that this man is sloppy and out of time is just some way to reinflate your ego after he just dismantled and crushed it. He's better than you. Period. Whether or not he's better than someone else doesn't matter. Don't be a dick. Shut up and watch it or don't.

Shawn Lane is the most articulate guitarist of all time. Not only was he unremarkabley talented but he was a gentleman and a teacher. I play all the blues. But you are so right!!!!! You can hear, and he can also explain his incredible mastery of the guitar. And any guitar shit you ever want to know. Here is the master!!!
@MrUsedBooks . in context it does. he uses this sandwiched into more "musical" diatonic phrases and progressions to add that extra spice. music without tension and dissonance would be boring.
@MrUsedBooks yeah but it's like saying "i don't need to get shot to know it hurts".
The person who got shot is gonna be pissed off at how condescending your being to him.
You gotta appreciate this stuff regardless and not just dismiss it as "music-less". You CAN form an opinion on it but it makes you a dick only trying to find a flaw in things that are essentially perfect.
@Jamsessionroom1337 That doesn't make sense at all. So what you are saying is that you can't know that it hurts to get shot until you get shot? What? I don't even know how you can compare getting shot to diminished runs. I find this sort of phrasing to me very uninteresting. I have yet to ever hear these types of licks to sound good in any context.
"I find this sort of phrasing to me very uninteresting" whatever man, your just finding an excuse to give point to your flawed opinion that's only saying "music-less".
Fact is, this is music, whatever shaped you twist it, whatever form you hear. It IS music.
If you find it uninteresting, it's a bad opinion as a listener, it takes nothing away from him and gives nothing of a point to u.
Let's be truthful, your just hating, your mad u can't play this so your finding an excuse to dismiss it.
@Jamsessionroom1337 Let's be truthful the only reason you care about what I say is because you hold this type of playing in high esteem and maybe you aspire to play like this one day. You are someone that is so infatuated with this type of playing you cannot even begin to understand why someone wouldn't like it. So as a result it offends you personally and you make no attempt to even try to understand why someone won't like it therefore anyone that doesn't like it must be "hating".
Taking my own phrasing out of context you so you can have a pseudo-point of what?
No, i understand why don't like this playing, because your probably into some other kind of music, if your not a guitarist then shut the fuck up about musicality, you don't play the instrument to even have an opinion on it.
Infatuated is a big word you don't know the meaning of, i'm a musician first, guitar is one of my many ways to convey messages in music, To have the balls to say this isn't music is stupid.
So before you even start spewing bull to have a little sense of whatever it is that runs your memory process, Here's your point, you don't like this music because you think it isn't music.
That's wrong, years of practice, learning, writing, studying guitar for 10+ years just to make a 3 minute video showcasing his talent isn't music?
You don't have the say of what is music if you have never studied as hard as that IN MUSIC.
@Jamsessionroom1337 You don't need to study music in order to form opinions on it. To say otherwise is just stupid. Just because someone spends years of practicing technique, studying guitar ,etc does not mean someone is going to create interesting music. To even think that the only reason Shawn Lane practiced so hard is to play some fast diminished runs for an instructional video is an insult to him. If you honestly think this is the height of his playing then I feel sorry for you.
@MrUsedBooks Absolutely...the only addition being a guitarist would do would be to give you an appreciation of the technical skill. Anyone who can hear has a valid opinion on music.
One great thing about this video is that it shows he could have been an amazing teacher as well. He's aware of everything that he does to achieve success in his pieces and he can communicate them to the listener quickly and coherently. He really was a special musician.
This is the only guy who ever lived, that could play so fast, you're brain can't pick it up, and you can't hear what he's doing. Faster than the speed of sound, almost.
Wow that is a ton of distortion.. I wished I could hear him do it clean.. If he could make it sound articulated clean? I would be extremely impressed..
@Kingding6 No I actually watched it.. I am a pro from Nashville.. We have to play with a clean tone and be remarkably articulate.. I have looked for him playing clean if it was as distinct as it appears his heavy distorted playing is.. It wasn't it was very loose and sloppy.. That was a disappointment because I really like Shawn. Gambale plays exactly the same whether it's distorted, clean or an acoustic.. Plus his lines are incredible.. Wanted more from Shawn actually..
@SuperGuitarman69 Shawn doesn't use the clean sound very much. \its just not part of his schtick. Type in "shawn lane aga of the ladies" thats a pretty clean tone. And I don't know about your claim that it was "very loose and sloppy". Were talking about one of the greatest guitarists of all time here.
@Kingding6 No I like Shawn like I said.. He is a very unique player.. but he is in reality a rock player.. I do like some his more "holdsworthy" sounding stuff later.. He sounded like he was really focusing on theory and what the correct way is to play over changes.. And he started understanding that playing "outside" wasn't done with random shapes but rather tones that rubbed the correct scale tones.. I wished he would've lived longer.. He would have been great. A lot of real players think that
Really dude? Shawn has played this type of stuff with low gain tones before and distortion only hides mistakes if you have very untrained ears. If anything, distortion makes mistakes even more clear with this type of tone due to the fact that muting is essential and reverb only helps the mistakes ring out. There were little to no mistakes here and I didn't know that Shawn Lane didn't play Jazz Fusion or Indian music. What a shock to realize he is just a rock player. Idiot.
@Fluffypopcicle Do you realize it is the same person here you are commenting too? No once again even here you show more and more and more what a novice you are.. You are the guy that goes into a music store and plays harmonic minor as fast as you can to impress the local kids.. Listen to Brent Mason, Tal Farlow, and Gambale.. They are clean and precise.. And IN TIME
When I go into a music store I play jazz chords and sweeps based off of 6th and 9th chords usually. I like them because they have a cool sound and I'm comfortable playing them. What would I gain by impressing kids? I don't aim to impress, I aim to enjoy playing the guitar and I do. Shawn has played very complicated things with low gain tones before, he is very clean.. You're judging my playing despite the fact that you have never heard me play before.
@Fluffypopcicle I am NOT judging you playing... But in your blatant disregard for the things I point out, I can gather about how you play.. Tho, I have not actually heard it... I was trying to help you out.. And I have heard him play clean, it is atrocious.. Usually it's mainly country and those who play straight ahead jazz that are the ones that can play complicated "clean" lines and articulate them well.. Why? We have to do it all the time..
Country... yeah, maybe a small population of country guitarists, but Yngwie has more complicated clean lines that most country guitarists. The things you have "pointed out" are certain points in songs. Actually, not even songs, just two improvisations. You can say Shawn isn't clean and out of time all you want, but you can't prove it.
@Fluffypopcicle Really? Try going and watching Hot Wired by Brent Mason.. Or watch the players.. You'll see that statement is full of shit right off the bat..

@MikeyIV haha! but it's....soo.....complex! first there's a minor....third.....and then....another....minor third....and then another.......minor third......
by the way, i'm not hating on shawn lane. shawn lane is fucking awesome. i just thought it was a funny comment.
I don't think anyone has ever exceeded him in skill for his style. None of the famous shredders that's for sure. I love how his phrasing is great and he's a complete musician. Amazing guitar player.
@findingphunc I hear ya, it's not just the speed it's the mind bending fingering. This guy's IQ had to be through the roof. I hear he was referred to as an encyclopedia of music by other musicians, also.
The ultimate shredder. Untouchable. I swear at one point in this video after Shawn finishes one of his finger flurries, he is struck by a "What the fuck did I just play?" thought. It's in his body language. "How do I explain to people how to be incredible? Ummm. I dunno. Sixes and nines?"
@flipthescript the LAST thing lane did was show off..........hes playing this with LITTLE effort...........Imagine if he tried to "Show off"...............
@DreamTheaterisGod1 not many people can unless they are double jointed in the fingers like he was ; ) oh and that's just to be able to phrase and actually fret this beast of a run.... not to mention picking each note...
@jaranarm How's it an insult? If I say someone "shreds" it's usually a compliment. It doesn't mean that's the ONLY thing the person in question does but come on how could you call stuff like this NOT shredding?
They should make a South Park eppisode on him.

That's a subjective look at it I suppose. Listen to some of his live jams where he uses stuff like this. There's a few good ones on here.
I consider it more useful from a symmetrical standpoint, for transposition and modulation.

Btw, it'd be a double flat 7 (bb7), not a flat 7, and the non-related blues scale you mentioned is nonexistent with classical music :P

@MikeyIV You clearly know nothing about guitar.
That is theoretical beyond belief. If you knew anything about theory or playing, you would keep you're mouth shut.
Go back to Pentatonics.
Genoc1deP7 4 months ago
@Genoc1deP7 haha theoretical? He's playing diminished arpeggios. It's not rocket science.
MikeyIV 4 months ago
@MikeyIV haha! but it's....soo.....complex! first there's a minor....third.....and then....another....minor third....and then another.......minor third......
by the way, i'm not hating on shawn lane. shawn lane is fucking awesome. i just thought it was a funny comment.
flipadiddle 4 months ago
I don't think anyone has ever exceeded him in skill for his style. None of the famous shredders that's for sure. I love how his phrasing is great and he's a complete musician. Amazing guitar player.

@ChicagoJoe670 I so agree with you
MKVSDCTESTER2011 4 months ago
I wish he didn't have that annoying echo. This sounds amazing except for the spaceship sound. That was the sound of the time I suppose.

When he picks the lick that's the icing on the cake for "you will not be able to play this"
neoclasiccl 4 months ago 2
I still want to see someone play this lick as fast as Shawn LOL. I feel I will grow old and grey before that happens. Shawn was the man RIP!!!

findingphunc 5 months ago
@findingphunc I hear ya, it's not just the speed it's the mind bending fingering. This guy's IQ had to be through the roof. I hear he was referred to as an encyclopedia of music by other musicians, also.

he's faster than the brazilian guy

The ultimate shredder. Untouchable. I swear at one point in this video after Shawn finishes one of his finger flurries, he is struck by a "What the fuck did I just play?" thought. It's in his body language. "How do I explain to people how to be incredible? Ummm. I dunno. Sixes and nines?"

Please don't label Shawn a "shredder". It's just plain insulting to what he contributed to the realm of not just guitar but to music in general.
jaranarm 8 months ago 28
@jaranarm How's it an insult? If I say someone "shreds" it's usually a compliment. It doesn't mean that's the ONLY thing the person in question does but come on how could you call stuff like this NOT shredding?
Whackooyzero 4 months ago
@Whackooyzero
Because some people only view him as a shredder and label him as such.
