  • This is an incredible topic thx

  • The intelligent design manifests itself in those who choose to help others. We are special, made of the stuff of stars, traveling through space. This man certainly emulates the best qualities of God.

  • build a full person!!!

  • Why the hell didn't the audience applaud when they saw the heart valve, that's absolutely incredible!

  • Dr. Curt Connors has tried this.

  • Amazing.

  • I am impressed beyond words and so thankful that this research is being done. Small question though has there been progress on connecting these organs to the nervous system as well?

  • Love without understanding is the source of all crime and unethical behavior. What length would you go for to save your partner's life?

  • I would be more than willing to participate, when he starts clinical trials with regeneration of pulmonary tissue, as I have been struggling with COPD for a number of years.

  • Scientists develop and do these things,

but is then up to society and politicians to make it right.

I can see a future where you get offered several premiums,

at the top you have those who can reproduce hearts, at the bottom you have

those who say bad luck goodnight and rest in peace.

  • I've had my skin cloned when i lost around 70% of it in a fire, sadly it didn't work because the diet the hospital i was in was far to low in calories and nutrition. I wonder what i would of looked like if it had taken.

  • Are the cells being derived from the organs adult stem cells?

  • Can you please print me an new me

  • I don't know if this guy had some presentation skills training, but he is great!

He show wonderful things but I am curious how many of these will be widely used in 10 years.

  • David Blain gets 500,000 views and Anthony Atala gets 50,000 views, something isn't right with that.

  • @Air420 Its a dumb populous

  • @Air420 Its called entertainment, people who are already healthy don't care and are basically not worth the health because they don't care about it.

When you already have something, why search for it?

People who care will search, people who just want pleasure will not.

    I hate dumb people.

  • @Air420 David Blain - 1,000,000, this guy - 70,000

  • Anthonyn Atalanta

  • And I was feeling all high and mighty because I grew some food in my back yard. These dudes are growing parts of humans.

  • is it possible to grow a larger penis than what you have in the lab and then attache it instead of the one you have?

  • @MustLovePoop in future - yes :)

  • If the joint efforts of a couple of hundred very intelligent scientists working for about 20 years can only produce a very primitive organ, how on earth can a perfect organ in your soulless body be formed out of nothing?

Come on man, be wise and do not lose your mind at the end of time...

  • There is nothing unethical or against religion about regenerative medicine now...There are procedures that do not use embryos (destruction of life complaint) and do not use FBS (Fetal Bovine Serum) both of which are the main criticism of cell therapy. I'm a Christian scientist and I do not support certain unethical experiments, but I am studying regenerative medicine bc I feel its the greatest contribution to medicine ever...

  • Thumbs up? Hell yes!

  • This guy had a fucking undergrad in psychology and now is a top researcher in regenerative medicine with harvard researchers! Proof that your major, in the long run, isn't that important (as long as your grad school research is great).

  • 11:25 O_______O

  • this is a good idea but only when no other alternative works. caution should be exercised.

  • we are evolved creatures with high intelligence (relatively speaking)

we evolved through the laws of natural selection.

our planet, by chance, happened to be perfect for something like us to take shape.

Intelligent life somewhere else in the universe? probably yes, looking at the statistics. Intelligent design? the facts show of no such thing.

  • is Anthony Atala Turkish?

  • @elenafab5 He's Peruvian

  • this dude is cool because he's wearing POLO.

  • IF this could be masterd it would be the greatest acomplishment in medicen EVER!!!

  • thats really cool

  • This guy is my idol

  • @Redbullskull Why is this? He's basically trying to replace God..he's only a man.

  • @ChefStef22 you could say that about basically anything. Synthetic insuline? Theyre trying to replace god!!! I think as long as its not distinctly forbidden in the bible to employ regenerative medicine its ok. And after all why should god have a problem with healing people?

  • Yet, you must agree, that the idea of not having a soul is arguably ... an educated guess. Like, there is no God. God is what ? There obviously is an intelligent design that brought us here. That would be God ? Wether it has good or bad intentions. I don't believe that the brain itself will give proof whether we have a soul or not. there is an individual soul and a collective soul. A collective conciousness that exists.

  • No, there's not obviously an intelligent design that brought us here. That kind of thinking goes back a long long time. It's the reason why humans thought they were the center of the universe.

We're not special, we're made of the most common elements in the universe. We are stardust. And that is much more interesting than thinking some intelligence "made" us.

  • It is an older idea, but it hasnt nessicarily changed. The Universe starts off and after 13.7 billion years we emerge throught the forces acting and reacting with each other. Now, there are probably more of us or other beings like us in other parts of the universe. Nature has a way of producing things abundantly in hopes that the few will reach it's next state. I never stated that we were made in 7 days. you're right, we are made of stardust and basic elements. No arguement there.

  • There are laws and forces that have governed the movements of those particles and elements to come together and create us. Just that it may also have been a 13.7 billion year process. Who knows, our species could even be older than a few million years, and may have come from another planet originaly. Anything is possible. So the intelligent design cannot be ruled out.

  • If you think of what we have created, imagine the mind that was necissary to create the universe. Our bodies are far more complex than anything we have ever created. Our creations are of an intelligent design.

  • "You may call me an agnostic... I do not share the crusading spirit of the professional atheist whose fervor is mostly due to a painful act of liberation from the fetters of religious indoctrination received in youth. I prefer an attitude of humility corresponding to the weakness of our intellectual understanding of nature and of our own being." Albert Einstein

What is obvious is you can't claim a correct answer either way truthfully until you have a perfect understanding of everything.

  • @Urglab

    Quote: "We are stardust"

That's a great line from Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, but just because there is some great hippie music about it doesn't make it true. ~_^

  • @NeonString He's quoting Carl Sagan. And it's absolutely true, we are very literally made out of stardust. Go read on stellar nucleosynthesis before you diss one of the most profound pieces of scientific truth out there.

  • @1ucasvb Just a supported theory not one of the most profound pieces of scientific truth out there. It is a theory it is thought, it is not absolute therefore it is not a truth not even a partial one just a theory with credible evidence but not full proven.

Don't let your lack of approvement for religious people because you feel mentally superior you let it blind your argument, and make you more moronic then any type of people let alone religious.

  • @morthysucksballs You can only PROVE something absolutely in mathematics and logic. Scientific theories supported by vast amounts of empiric evidence is the absolute best you can get in practice. Your poor understanding of science in general, the limits of empirical knowledge and what a scientific theory actually entails just goes to show your level of ignorance. It's not a matter of feeling mentally superior, it's a matter of seeing you wallow in your own ignorance of the terminology.

  • @1ucasvb You honestly make me laugh. Like my God your trying to win an internet argument, trying to argue logic and mathematics when you interject emotion and ignorance into what you are saying. To think you can only Prove something through mathematics not only makes you narrow minded but have a de facto logical fallacy in itself. You have the trait of hubris. Mankind has always been plagued by hubris induced fools and you carry on that tradition. You have a poor understanding of life friend.

  • @1ucasvb And if you forgot I said "t is a theory it is thought, it is not absolute therefore it is not a truth not even a partial one just a theory with credible evidence but not full proven" like i said IT IS A THEORY not a RULE or PRINCIPLE a THEORY. Fucking internet trolls can't even read what I said. THEORY THEORY THEORY does not mean LAW, RULE, PRINCIPLE, TRUTH only means THEORY. durp a durp

  • @morthysucksballs I wonder if you've heard of the theory of gravity

  • @1ucasvb Yeah I'm sorry, I just felt like being snarky because of the atheist bent of the overall comment. Plus I do like Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. ^_^ P.S. One thing Christians and atheists alike can agree upon is how fantastic the Symphony of Science song "A Glorious Dawn" is. youtube.com/watch?v=zSgiXGELjbc

  • @Urglab Spoken like a true convinced atheist.

  • @Urglab Saying something is something takes something away from that something. Stardust? There's so many things our bodies are made up of and there are discoveries of more things (ex. neutrinos) that we are made up of. If you think that we're made up of stardust and that's that you're losing out

  • @Urglab The events that took place which we are now a result of is intelligent design. You cant see all the processes of the intelligent design, that is what limits your view.

  • this is AMAZING!!!

  • This is unbelievable!!!

  • I can't stop listening to this #ilovethis

  • that is some crzy sht. sheesh

  • They stand to make a lot of money from this work, and there's nothing wrong with that. The problem comes from antiquated IP and patent laws that artificially restrict the flow of this technology.

  • Is it possible to invest in the whole liver regeneration aspect of his research? I may need a new one in twenty or thirty years.

  • Genetic engineering can solve a lot of problems. The problem today is that the big corporations are more interested in using this technology to make money than to benefit the public.

  • We need to evolve memetically before we can harness our own genetics. I have no doubt that our future involves such things however.

  • This is ridiculous.

And by ridiculous, I mean ridiculously cool!

  • Dear uneducated people. Theirs more then abortion to get stem cells. Another person from TED talking about regenerative medicine said you can also get stem cells from fat tissue.

  • @Frey12 Yup its called ADSC (Adipose [fat] Derived Stem Cells) and its pretty damn cool lol

  • This is fucking amazing!

  • we could use this too replicate different types of blood too! really cool stuff.

  • Since 1.4 million healthy newborn American boys are having valuable body parts amputated against their will every year, the market for this technology is bottomless for the foreseeable future.

  • @TLCTugger they reckon there's medical reasons to do it, but it really does seem like elective surgery to me

  • Not one national medical association on earth (not even Israel's) endorses routine infant circumcision. Over 80% of the world does not circumcise minors.

  • hey, i wasn't endorsing it, in fact i think it's barbaric and cruel and supporters have found medical evidence after the fact.

  • The medical reasons for circumcision are highly suspect. Slicing off healthy body parts just to prevent infection makes very little sense, especially when the infection is not life threatening.

  • and no right thinking male would wish his organ smaller!!

  • I'm a rookie to all this but this seems to be the first step towards warping or teleporting a person. As soon as we can analyze a body fast enough to know who we are sending. And this tech fast enough rebuild them in another location... Maybe my grandkids will?

  • What you are talking about isn't teleportation, that's building an identical person at another location. The original person will still be alive.

  • killing the original is the easy part

  • That doesn't really change anything as it is still not teleportation if you kill the original, it's cloning + murder/suicide.

  • Yet that's exactly what happens in transporters in startrek:

    - atomically copy original

    - send data

    - destroy original

    - atomically assemble new person.

Yes, it freaks some people out.

Is is technically murder? Is it ethical? All of these questions are summed up as "The Transporter Problem". Google that term and you'll find a lot of discussion.

It also tends to force people to confront the question of the existence (or not) of an immaterial soul.

  • how can you call it a waste ?

  • Can you name one medical advance that has occurred as a result of embryonic stem cell research other than that they're dangerous and we can't use them? In 2001 we were promised all sorts of miracles, none of which have come true. In California voters passed a $6 billion bond issue based on this false promise. It was not about finding miracle cures it was all about getting a grant from the taxpayers. Now the state is broke and we have nothing to show for it.

  • Why don't you search pubmed and see for yourself?

  • @Duke1839 did you listen to how long it took to get where this research is? what george bush did was slow the possiblity of getting something from the Stem cell research. I guess it your opinion if you think embryos are humans, but the ethical science which have continued to propel human medicine has an will continue to move humanity forward. The idea that George bush, who is a politician is right about medicine, is just comical.

  • "The idea that George bush, who is a politician is right about medicine, is just comical. "

The idea that he was right about ANYTHING is just comical. ; ) Your point rings true though, politicians shouldn't be making over-reaching decisions about scientific research.

  • Not a Bush supporter (voted against him three times if you count the florida primary), but I do like clarity of perception. Was Bush right or wrong when he got Congress to commit 15 billion dollars in AIDS relief to Africa, when no western leader had committed even 1 billion?

  • he was wrong. u can pay as much as you like to africa this continent is going to be a shithole for eternity if these guys dont start to care about it themselves

  • The California Bond issue was huge failure we are exactly the same place we were six years ago when the state wasted 6 Billion dollars on embryonic stem cells. BTW, Bush was also right about Global Warming but the politician Algore was wrong. The Idea that anyone ever took Algore seriously on any scientific issue is just comical.

  • Bush and Gore did not have a clue about global warming, to suggest that any politician understands such a deeply involved science (that cannot yet even be modelled!) is absolutely ridiculous.

  • Really interesting, should give those critically injured people a second chance. I wonder if they could build and condition biological machines to do other things? Water pumps that use actual muscles and can heal punctures? Generators made of powerful organs that run on "food" and output biodegradable waste like we do? I guess they would need a heart as well. I know its off topic, or not possible, just what came to mind.

  • love it

  • does anybody know if the kidneys also contains collagen?

  • I believe it was Dr Obi-Wan Kenobi who said:

The Collagen is what gives a mammal his structure. It's a protein created by all living mammals. It surrounds us, penetrates us, and binds the tissues together.

To answer your question: Yes, it is in every organ. It is the most common protein in our bodies.

  • Excellent. :)

  • I bet the 3D printing could be used to create the liver skeleton, and then they could grow the patient's liver cells around them.

  • Smart Bomb Material! yay! I mean.. Balm

  • stem cells also work

  • two caste of humans in the future - immortal rich and the mortal poor. I know which group I rather belong to.

    Get rich people get rich.

  • true. also the fight for basic resources like water

  • i'm on it! i'm on it!

  • I'll eat them for their souls.

  • Awesome, absolutely amazing. This century, we will have to decide whether humans have the right to immortality, crazy stuff.

  • My mind is blown.

  • Awe inspiring

  • "Actually"

  • jewish?

  • human

  • That was cool but actually, actually, actually. His lectures would make great drinking games.

    Actually.

  • LOL...

  • I counted...

    Actually: 47 times

    Actual: 2 times

I also thought he sounded like that one Tim Conway character from the Carol Burnett show...anyway.

But that was a VERY interesting talk nonetheless.

  • NEW GODS, NEW BODIES,NEW AGENDAS.

  • I am blown away, this is absolutely ingenious

  • @DeathG4n agreed.

  • WOW!

  • not enough dancing?

  • I think it's fair enough to say yes.

  • good work

  • We will live forever. :-)

  • This stuff is INSANE!

  • hope

  • Could this mean we potentially could grow organs that we do not already have or extra/enhanced limbs maybe?

  • Yes, Science tells us we can expect super legs within the next 5 years, allowing the average human (under 180lbs) to jump up to 35+ ft!!!!!!

  • but then again, science told us we would be in colonies on the moon, with flying cars, by the y2K..... So i usually dont believe these premonitions :)

  • @SkitzSkitzSkitz

I don't think it was science that was saying that really, I think it was people's interpretations of science. But you have a point, we talk so much about what's possible that we tend to lose focus of the fact that it's only possible.

  • Errrrr.... that wasn't science dude, that was your TV channel.

    World of difference, buddy.

  • Is he saying "smart biomaterial"? Sounds like "smart bomb material"

  • this tedtalks thing is such a good idea. it exposes regular people to the cutting edge ideas of the future. normally would have to be there to here this, which means paying money and time, which most can't afford

  • freakin incredible

  • Every day I love science more and more.

  • Science loves you too and wants to get married.

  • @roidroid I cant marry science, I have too many wild love affairs with too many different scientific fields.

  • Science is a swinger too

  • He needs to enunciate the word "balm"

...he says "smart bomb" at least 10 times

  • I heard bomb too... and was thoroughly confused until i realised he meant balm. T_T

  • smart bombs to remove limbs.

smart balms to grow them back again.

  • can you create a brain??

  • Not now, but in future, sure. It's possible.

  • But will it be you?

  • I'm not really sure what you are referring to.

Are you asking whether the a person that received an 'artificial' brain still would be the same person? No, even if we managed to copy all his memories, experiences, skills and knowledge there still wouldn't be continuity between the consciousnesses. We may create the same person, but not the same consciousness.

But I'm still waiting for artificial brains because this way we can almost completely refute this ridiculous idea about us having souls.

  • Yeah, that's what I getting at. What's interesting to me in all this is a question of what we are anyway. I don't believe in souls, but our brains aren't exactly like hard drives. Those remain the same matter throughout their existence.

Even though the neurons in our heads don't undergo mitosis, they are still slowly broken down and replaced bit by bit, until any given neurons is composed of different atoms than was before. It's like we are just patterns that last for a long time.

  • I agree. I tend to think about consciousness as simply a higher form of information. It may seem vague but I guess that's the best we can do for now. In future we should be able to understand how more and more complex structures composed of information create new entities like consciousness or even more.

And about the constant regeneration of brain, I guess our consciousness is really too complex to be affected in any drastic way by a fraction of it's medium being rebuild.

  • I guess I wonder why we have any sense of identity at all.

  • Yes, but did you not just say that we would not have the same conciousness ? I'm assuming you're refering to an awarness.

  • That may be so. English is not my native language so you must excuse my poor choice of words in this case.

  • So finally I can say:

"God doesn't heal amputees, science does!"

    Go science, go science..

  • a printer? this sounds legit

  • That's amazing!

  • excelent

thanks goodness for science, in this age of religious idiocity watching videos like this gives me hope for humanity.

  • LMAO @ the irony of "idiocity".

  • what!!

  • Incredible. There is hope then, that many of us will celebrate our 100th birthday, wearing a new meatsuit:)

  • You're welcome, you never lost my attention O_O

  • speechless

  • amazing!

  • No, no and sooner or later. Other questions?

  • This is truly amazing I just can't see how, with great science like this going on, Britney Spears still ends up on the front page of newspapers, and this stuff goes virtually unreported.

  • Because American media

  • Absolutely fantastic.....

  • After producing the heart cells on the printer I was sure he was going to say:

"Please don't try this at home"
