Was intrigued by this movie purely cos of the cast: Seth Rogan, Adam Sandler, etc and being directed by Judd Apatow, I always had in my mind it would be a comedy of some sort. But given the fact it is about a man who gets told one minute he's going to die then the next he is going to live, you can tell it's clearly more than a comedy. Excellent review, but I might give it a miss and wait for the DVD :)
I didn't think this movies was a typical "comedy". Interesting that you enjoyed it, the reviews have been mixed however perhaps these reviewers are expecting a comedy.
On another note, the other comedy in theatres right now is "The Ugly Truth"... absolutely atrocious. It was horribly skewed and offensive. I won't be making a vlog review as I refuse to give it any more press than it has already received.
I have found that phallic humour has been rather popular lately, I personally am over it!
We're definitely in agreement on this one, in fact I don't think we've ever disagreed. It is overlong, as with all of Apatow's film if he cut 30 minutes it would be a stronger film. The last third is really were it needed to be tightened. Rogen and Sandler really are good actors. Comics in general tend to make good actors if they try because so much of what they do is finding humor in pain and tragedy. Funny People definitely does that.
I think comics make good actors often times as well; for example, the first movie I remember seeing Robin Williams in as a "serious" actor was "Moscow On The Hudson" after the "Mork & Mindy" series on TV. I thought he was very believable and had so much more range in his acting abilities than I would have ever supposed before. He also was very good in "The Fisher King", a movie called "Night Listener" or something like that & others like the Al Pacino "Insomnia" movie, Awakenings, JacobTheLiar
Bought it.

Yes, I'd say check out the DVD. There are worthwhile things in this movie.... But it's long, so at least on video you can go to the loo.

Me, being a big Eminem fan, really enjoyed Marshall and Ray Romano's scene in the movie. That MADE it for me.

Agreed. It's the whole "dark side" thing! I can think of lots of examples.... Here's a random one: Jack Black in 'Margot at the Wedding'.
