I have a question, whenever I do this at a fast pace right after I let go of the bend the string above lets out an annoying open string tone where my finger obviously slightly brushed it while exiting the bend. How can I get rid of this annoying sound, so it sounds cleaner? Amazing tone you get from that setup by the way!
i have this problem its like whenever i bend, say the b-string, i always hit the g-string as well and whenever i do this lick i have like a G note just ringing in the background. any tips on how to eliminate that?
Hey, awesome videos man! But what i would really like to see is a little video about all the notes that are in between the licks, could you make a video of how Slash (navigate and operate) around the scales. all the notes that are just fired away randomly all the time, is there any special patterns that he does? I think you know what i mean? I would litterally run a marathon to see such a lesson from you? can you do that?
@DIGOOOO1 Yeah, I broke my finger when I first started playing guitar and I never changed it up. But thankfully I made it work for me. Thanks for the kind words!
I can do that lick... the problem is that I've been doing that lick since I first started learning pentatonics and I've always used my third finger instead of the fourth and I just can't get used to it -__-
Please help!!! Your playing is really amazing. So, slash is infamous for using his pinky in situations where most guitarist (me included) would not...could you please comment on your thoughts about your pinky use in these licks?...Did you always play these using your pinky? Do you find it possible/ comfortable to play them without it, or do you feel that it as vital to playing as fluid and fast as you do? Any help is greatly appreciated....and please keep up the truly amazing work!!!
dude this lesson is dope diggity fresh! i can almost do it, i can only do it up to speed about 4 times in a row b4 i mess up and ive been working on this lick for about 3 weeks, it helps me if i do it in standerd tuning for a while untill i can do ot ok then i switch to half step down which makes it easier. thanks man you rock
@MrMariokiller Depends on what amp and guitar your using. If you're willing to buy, Slash uses a Marshall amp, but if you've got a cheaper amp, just tone the mid and tremble down, and add some echo/delay. And presto! Slash's tone.
just a quick question, after the bend and during the pull off,do you release the note( on 13 th fret,b string) or keep it pressed before the next bend?
Dude..Love the videos. Keep it up! You're a great guitarist. If you can, please explain the right hand movements for us "slower leaners" especially in video 2 where you mix lick one and two together.
@smashingpoop what type of strings are you using? Coz initially i had Ernie Ball's Super Slinky, which are the thin ones, High E string was Gauge 9. I had the same prob, then i bought the Power Slinky's which E string was gauge 11, thicker and tighter.. prob was solved for me.
fucking hell i fucking love your tutorials i just have to get my fucking pinky warmed up before i try this one, thanks for showing how to do it, sounds awesum.
Btw, is it easier to play all of these licks with um lighter strings? I think ive got the standard medium strings on my epiphone and my friend has an ibanez and when i try on his guitar it feels alot easier due to the thinner neck and alot lighter strings, its a lot easier to bend on his strings tbh.
It's simply a matter of getting used it to. The fourth finger is naturally the weakest so people avoid using it. But get used to using it and you'll be a much more versatile guitarist. Just hang in there, it'll get easier.
Constructive suggestion: you say F# minor, but of course, with Slash plays G, on a down-tuned guitar. For people like me looking at fingering of the org solo, this was a bit confusing.

Thanks for writing in. I really shouldn't have mentioned any theory in these lessons because all of these licks can be played in any position. The main focus here is just building the technique.
i don't know why, but i can't make this lick sound good :S the hammer on pull off part does not sound nice when i do it even though my pulloffs and hammer ons are good with everything else, don't know why this is bugging so much this lick!?
It all takes time and practice, but you'll get it!. Tone and how your guitar is set up can affect how a lick sounds just as much as your technique. You have to look at everything when trying to figure out what the problem is if something doesn't sound the way you want it to.
Thanks for writing in Doctor Dreams. I personally like to use 11 gauge Ernie Ball Strings. Tuning down accomplishes a few things: 1) It's sounds different (i.e. darker/heavier), 2.) it's a little easier to play on, and 3.) In Slash's case, he might have tuned dwn his guitar to make Axl's voice sound even higher since vocal range was all the rage in the 1980's.
Actually I never took lessons because I just learned from guys like Slash ;) As far as building up speed it comes down to 2 things 1.) Practice and 2.) Patience. I was not able to do this stuff over night. Building strength in your hands is no different than building strength in any other part of your body. You just have to be diligent. But if you take the time you will be rewarded with the results.
everything you do on the guitar must be crystal CLEAR. use a metronome. start AS SLOWLY AS POSSIBLE so that every note sounds exactly as it should , no extra sounds. once you notice that you`re having no problem following the metronome AND playing crystal clear you can spped up the tempo. it`s as simple as that. just a matter of time and perseverence.
Thank you so much! Believe it or not, it's actually not an amp at all. It's a VST Instrument called Guitar Rig 3 made by Native Instruments. It's really cool so you should check it out.
Honestly, they're not really anybody's licks in particular. Thousands of guitarists use these. That being said, Schenker was a huge influence on Slash.
If you can play the lick that way and get the desired sound then it's okay. There are no rules! However, I recommend using your pinky finger because you will become a more versatile guitarist and it will make many other licks a lot easier.
Awesome! I'm glad you're getting something out of the lessons.
Believe it or not, it's actually not an amp at all. It's a VST Instrument called Guitar Rig 3 made by Native Instruments. Check it out, it's pretty sweet.
I don't how long it will take you since I've never seen you play! But it doesn't matter, learning to play the guitar isn't a race. If you like the lick and you take the time to practice it, you'll learn it.
hey man, thanks for the lessons. im curious to know how long youve been playin, or what your practice routine is like. like how much time you spend a day playin. where is your band from? alright thanks again.
You're totally welcome! I've been playing for about 13 years. I spend most of my time writing music for Mash and Flutter which is based out of LA and NYC. I have two thoughts on practice. 1.) Practice licks & ideas that you will ACTUALLY use in your everyday playing. 2.) You're only as good as your influences. I dig Slash, Gary Moore, Paul Gilbert, so I tried to learn from them, but I also wanted to find my own voice. If you always listen to Nirvana, but want to play like Yngwie, it won't happen
I find it extremely hard to use my little finger, but I will give it a go. I am going to watch all of these Vids you are a real good guitarist!!!!Thanks..Jordan
wow nice man....i wanted to ask is it easier to do that on a Les Paul or Epi.... or could u use a normal electric guitar. Cuz on my guitar the Strings are kinda hard to pluck when im playing fast solos...
Thank you so much! Believe it or not, it's actually not an amp at all. It's a VST Instrument called Guitar Rig 3 made by Native Instruments. Check it out, it's pretty sweet.
You could do that. Michael Hedges once said that a player should use anything at their disposal to create the right sound including using their pinky, toes, teeth, etc. The point is that if playing this lick your way gives you the desired sound, then it's okay. I still recommend it my way in the video because by developing your pinky you will become a more technically versatile guitarist.
Thanks for writing in! I have no idea how long it took me. But don't worry about the speed, with a little practice and patience you'll get it. Learning the guitar isn't a race, just enjoy playing;)
hi my name, douglas I'm from Brazil and I am very grateful for having done this video, because I was trying to get this land for some time, you can tell me some kind of exercise to increase my speed? ae else you will be q can make a video of the soil that makes the slash before dderso boss in Tokyo, thanks
I've always felt a person should practice something that inspires them. If I'm going to take the time to practice something, I ultimately want to use it in my playing. Doing that makes practice a lot more rewarding. So find some licks you really want to learn and practice those to build speed. It's way better than doing dull chromatic execrcises. And always use a metronome!
I think you are the best guitar player on YouTube I could tell
By your finguring style . I love that you picked slash as the first artist being that he is hot . I would love to see more slash lessons and just keeep fucking rocking you tube

When i do the bends on the 13 fret on the B string the G string makes alot of noice, is there a way to solve it??
caponi14 2 years ago
I'm guessing you have single coil pickups, if so you can't really do much about bg noise.
kole076 2 years ago
I have a Epiphone Les Paul Slash goldtop with, 'Alnico pro 2 humbuckers'
So it's not single coil pickups. What else could it be?
caponi14 2 years ago
You could have a bad guitar cord or a noisy amp via radio interference. I'm not sure what else it could be without actually looking at your setup.

Would it come out right if the hammer on pull off part with my fore finger and my ring finger instead of my pinky?
Atmxmurphy 3 years ago
You could do that. Michael Hedges once said that a player should use anything at their disposal to create the right sound including using their pinky, toes, teeth, etc. The point is that if playing this lick your way gives you the desired sound, then it's okay. I still recommend it my way in the video because by developing your pinky you will become a more technically versatile guitarist.

Man I will never make this up to speed anytime soon. How long did it take you to make it up to speed?
Mindfreakfan11 3 years ago
Thanks for writing in! I have no idea how long it took me. But don't worry about the speed, with a little practice and patience you'll get it. Learning the guitar isn't a race, just enjoy playing;)

Nice tone :]. Your very helpful. What equipment do you use??
jackedup5 3 years ago
Thanks for the nice words! I mainly play a Les Paul Standard and I use a program called Guitar Rig 3 by Native Instruments to dial up the tone.

And always use a metronome!
mashandflutter 3 years ago
i fully agree, but is the metronome really so important?
saulclaws 3 years ago
It's really a great habit to use one consistently. Your sense of rhythm will improve.
