The reason Charizard was chosen as #1 probably has a lot more to do with how powerful, iconic, and sought after the ORIGINAL Charizard CARD was back when the Pokemon fever was widespread. It was THE card to have and worth hundreds of dollars, thousands if it was first edition, and powerful game-wise all the way through the fad.

So, in other words, probably a lot of Pokemon TCG players such as myself felt really nostalgic about this one.
